What do we do about all of you assholes?

We've all seen what can happen when MeFi devolves into pointless personality conflicts: the site gets hijacked to propogate something that 99.9% of the users don't care about. We've also all seen one member virtually drag another into such conflicts, making a two-way crapfest out of what was originally just one-sided goofiness...[more inside]

No Iraq amputee trolling please.

Come on do we need this type of trolling here? (more inside)

Being trolled from the outside

Is he baiting us? Noted ex-Mefite Steven Den Beste, in self-imposed exile, says he left because we got "stranger and stranger" and, according to him, the inmates are still running the asylum. Are we guilty of lefty groupthink, or is SDB focusing on the posts that annoy him and ignoring the diversity of opinions here, and quit in a huff because we wouldn't all agree with him? (Note: we've talked about him before on Metatalk.)

FPP: Trolling?

Trolls disguised as pleas for piss tests? Maybe someone should just ask ponchogaddo to stop pissing all over the threads.

I'm going to draw attention to this thread

At the risk (feh, who am I kidding?) of pouring salt in the proverbial wound, I'm going to draw attention to this thread. These two users were apparently engaged in some buffoonery, and perhaps the community was a little harsh, but their reactions really made me mad. Do I, or we, or MeFi in general, really need these guys maliciously baiting other users?

Trolling: secret agreement, or an excuse to beat a dead horse?

See now, here is my question, with all sincerity, does MeFi continue to allow such troll posting because MeFi (semi-secretly) agrees with the poster, or just because MeFi wants another excuse to beat a dead horse?

Us declares itself above the law.

Us declares itself above the law.

Other than one or two people here and there talking about the topic at hand, this thread was basically a shouting match and trolling session. Is this the level of debate that now passes for inteligent from the MetaFilter community?

A troll by any other name

I'd use the word troll in this case, but it has some connotations that are a bit loaded given the subject.

A litterbox for pooflinging

Groan. Please. Stop.

Maybe we can set up a litterbox someplace where the concerned parties can fling the usual turds at each other till their batteries run down. These FPPs don't even seem to be conducive to discussion anymore. Agree to disagree already.

disagree != troll

Orthodoxy again rears its ugly head. Trolling is alleged three times in a row because the poster's views diverged from the Metafilter norm (and the poster was alleged to be gasp repeatedly expressing similar views), with the worst yet to come; another poster is called blatantly biased and therefore "loses any credibility", and told "not to expect to be taken seriously" even though he has himself explained that bias and has been thoughtful and on point to discussion. Another was recently called out for not leavening his posts with, well, other posts expressing a different viewpoint. Is this really contributory to open discussion and debate? Is it really now to be verboten to express a point of view, especially in an FPP? Can someone join a discussion even though they have pre-existing views, whether they be based on bias or principle? Or are some on Metafilter simply annoyed by points of view they don't like?

Troll button pony

A feature idea: Add a button to the bottom of every MeFi page that says "this is a troll" (below the button, add a link that says "What's a troll?" that links to an explanation). Then it's just a matter of math: If over, say, fifty percent of the visitors to that thread mark it as a troll, delete it (or, at least, flag it for admin review). A system like this might discourage people from posting threads just to piss everyone off.

Anonymous MeFi troll duels with self. Loses.

Anonymous MeFi troll duels with self. Loses. Seems apparent that moolafoo is trying to piss someone off here, but who? Darkaru? Metafilter? America? Granny? Ah well, doesn't matter anyway: he namedropped Hitler earlier in the thread, so according to Godwin the troll-attempt was dead on arrival.

Well, this thread has pretty much hit rock bottom.

Not needing to respond to every post

"Your Usenettish respond-to-everyone-who-disagrees-with-you style might be less effective than you think." 11 out of 49 comments were posted by one user. Is there a proper way to "debate"? Should one save up all retorts and include them in one or two comment posts? Or is it okay to respond to each person individually? I personally am getting tired of it...

Was I trolling?

Was I trolling? I had an admittedly heated reaction to an issue I care about, and blasted "conservatives/republicans/the right" as a group. But was I way outta line?

Help me lie

I really enjoy metafilter and there seem to be alot of intelligent people here. I need some help, I'm going in for a public relations job interview on Tuesday and know nothing about public relations. I fabricated a resume and writing samples to get the interview. My question is do any of you work in Public Relations, and can you give me some tips on the questions/answers I should expect at the interview, its on Tuesday. This is not a joke, really, thanks for the help.

there's trolls in there, lots of them.

there's trolls in there, lots of them.

holloway leads the pack, but there are a few others walking right behind.

matt, have you even looked at this thread? it's really offensive, completely unproductive as a conversation--the misogynists came
out of the woodwork too quickly for that.

honestly, if it were me, I'd boot a few people, but you might consider at least pulling the thread....

I'm adding "no trolling" to the guidelines.

What's with the fascination with "Web Celebs"

What's with the fascination with "Web Celebs" (aka "The Web Elite") here? Why do we all worship them? Why do we all hate them?

I want this out in the open and settled. It's been brewing with the angry trolls for waaaaay too long.

Anonymous posts are unwelcome.
