US Politics threads are getting a little... out there

Despite my high usernumber, I've been reading metafilter for a very long time, and like all of you I've seen the site -- and the site culture -- change a lot, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. One of the reasons I've stuck with the site for so long, and eventually signed up, is the sensible politics that somehow have always come to the forefront of discussions (thanks moderators!). In particular, discussions on Metafilter have traditionally provided a fantastic contrast to the less-hinged portions of the web where hyperbole and childish insults dominated. [more inside]

BART Thread Derail (groan)

Arguing the validity of BART shutting down its comm bridge? Fine. Implying I'm a thug and calling me a combative fuckwad because I supposedly support police violence? Come on!

Woah

This post turned into a clusterf*** of individual stereotyping and talking about the education levels of posters' kids (negatively). Let me just say: woah. [more inside]

Thought or not

Having taken some personal time out myself, and thus looking at things from a non-contributor perspective, is it possible that we can avoid terms like douchebag, asshole, dickwad, etc. These are violent words that make the reader take a step away. I am not saying they should be banned, but they really do have a proliferation within the site that is off putting to someone who might wish to contribute.

Or you could just not say anything.

If you feel the need to call the OP a douchebag, attack his phrasing, or lecture him for "body image baggage," please do it in this MeTa instead of shitting in the question.

LOLMORMONS

Come on y'all this is embarassing. I don't think anyone would appreciate getting their religion bashed this way and Mormon's LOVE that man. Believe me, I know some. Totally uncalled for.

AskMeFi comment deleted?

I've never posted a thread on MetaTalk before, so don't really know if this is the right way to go about it, but a comment of mine in the recent discussion on AskMeFi about plagiarism was deleted for reasons I can't really deduce. I did call out a few academics who were harping in the thread with their noses turned up but I wasn't calling names or slinging insults, so I'm a bit confused as to why my post was deleted. And it certainly added to the conversation as it was quoted and responded to by another poster who disagreed with me. Any admin help here?

User callsout another for excessive name-calling

Is it really necessary to call those you disagree with a turd, a douchebag, or a twat every time you make a comment in the same thread?

Namecalling is still inappropriate

"You know, the thing I really can't stand about queers is they're all Evangelicals like this guy or Republicans like Foley or both. As Amberglow will be the first to tell you, the more you deny it, the more that proves it true."

Calling someone a rapist could be libelous

Calling someone a rapist on the sole basis of an accusation made to a reporter is wrong -- and could be libelous. The allegation against Girls Gone Wild producer Joe Francis is horrible and contains a lot of persuasive details, but that doesn't mean it's true.

namecalling: watch your mouth

Metafilter: a generation of irrational, prinitive nincompoops, people who habitually spout indolent, fallacious arsedribble, fucking idiots, dreadful, ignorant, piss-witted religious apologists, fucking pathetic, whining, retrograde imbeciles... Fuck you vermin. Fuck you; you disgrace humanity.

Can we get some moderation or is this just a free-for-all?

Too much of this discussion is noise and pathetic behavior. It is really difficult to have a discussion when several people seem more interested in directly insulting the poster. Can we get some moderation or is this just a free-for-all? (There is more inside).

Personal Vendetta Filter

Personal Vendetta Filter: dhoyt links to a comment amberglow made yesterday on Metachat. In doing so, dhoyt continues to insist on taking shots at members on his shit list in threads where they have made no comment whatsoever. This penchant for personal attacks is getting sick. All too often, he uses this place as a sort of personal emotional toxic waste dump where he can vent some jealousy, spite and malice at whoever is on his shit list du jour. This particular time his little chickenshit cheapshot was just a little too obsessive-compulsive over-the-top.

It seemed like a snark-in-good-fun

It sounds as though this post was meant as a frivolous laugh at all parties involved, which is why the personal swipes sound so out of place. I partially note it because I was about to make a similar FPP, but perhaps should be glad I didn't....

Newsfilter, selfmoderation and namecalling do not make for a good post

In this thread, the poster begins with a cluster of mainstream political news links from BBC, Guardian, MSNBC, proceeds with with a healthy dose of self-moderation, and climaxes with "You're a lying SOB. Fuck off" for good measure, effectively derailing his own thread as one user points out. Aren't these exactly the kinds of posts we try to discourage?

Gratuitous personal insults

Gratuitious personal insults do not burnish the shine on a class act - From this recent metafilter discussion : "....do you not get annoyed by off-topic barrages and rows upon rows of text cut-and-pasted directly from the link itself without a fucking grain of comment on the content? I don't mind quoting a link if it adds to a comment; but quoting an entire article that you've alreadly linked to without including a single original thought is why I started calling him a bobblehead. He doesn't even understand the quip. I realize that his brain is likely mush after years and years of drug abuse"

takes one to know one

I will withhold the obscenities your mental capacity and nature evokes, and simply say: how stupid, how depraved you are.
I've seen fairly impressive spin, but this is a work of art. It takes a special strain of immorality to lie that well.

FPP not for settling old grudges

So when did the Metafilter front page become a place to settle old grudges? Really, this is just a bit childish. Your links should speak for themselves; editorializing and playground callouts help neither you nor anyone else.

What do we do about all of you assholes?

We've all seen what can happen when MeFi devolves into pointless personality conflicts: the site gets hijacked to propogate something that 99.9% of the users don't care about. We've also all seen one member virtually drag another into such conflicts, making a two-way crapfest out of what was originally just one-sided goofiness...[more inside]

agenda-filter

This is so lame. I've gotten used to flames on MeFi; its part of what passes for discourse anymore. But this entire post was a predominace of flaming meta-poo. I understand the calls of Agenda-filter, but if people are going to post stuff like "It seems I must speak in language you understand . Go fuck yourself you ill-bred shit." then I think its time we up the ante. If you're going to Meta-bitch, then take it MetaTalk. More importantly, if you're going to Metaflame, do it with half an ounce of couth and style. That appears to be where MetaFilter is headed, so please keep up. (slightly more inside)

Choosing to remain anonymous, then being an ass

If you can't beat em, join em, eh? I have finally reached my tolerance threshold for people who choose—and are allowed—to be anonymous on this community site. If folks can remain anonymous and hurl invectives toward my wife (who is not even a MeFi member) then the time has come where I too must become anonymous.

I know it has been discussed before, but anonymity has no place in a community such as this. If people can't stand behind their own words then perhaps it is best if they hold their tongues?

Bomb the fuck away.

Is this acceptable? I tried to levy what I thought was a reasonable, if salty, criticism against this member for a previous comment, and I get called some colourful names. I thought the majority of the comments in the thread were a civil and rational blend of discussion, agreement and disagreement, so it made me a bit sad, though not really surprised, to see such a response, and to see it supported by another member.

I submit that namecalling is NEVER appropriate on Metafilter.

"Might not hurt to actually know what something is before attacking it, moron." Seems like some people who have been around long enough to know better could learn a lot about civility and manners from some of the 14k crowd. I submit that namecalling is NEVER appropriate on Metafilter.
