Why are links removed? April 20, 2007 11:05 AM Subscribe
Could someone direct me to specific policies that state why posts are removed? I had one removed today because someone chose to use inappropriate language in a comment. The language use was apparently blamed on the article I posted. That is very strange. I don't know where the policy is that states what can and can't be posted.
You didn't read the deletion reason, did you?

on metafilter, there are 'guidelines', but 'specific policy' is largely avoided, because post removal is generally agreed to be a gray area. the only hard rule is 'no self-linking'. the guidelines are listed here and are linked from the 'new post' page.
Additionally, if your post gets deleted, you can visit the its URL (there are plugins for Firefox that permit you to view deleted post URLs on the main page, or you can try to deduce the URL from the posts surrounding the spot where your post used to be) to see the mods deletion reason.
i personally have never known inappropriate language to be a hindrance to my posts remaining visible.

For more details on what sorts of posts are generally not a good fit for the front page, check out The FAQ. In particular:
- If a thread has been removed or deleted, can I still find it someplace?
- What makes a good front page post to MetaFilter?
- Why was my MetaFilter post deleted?

It's a rough world out here, on the Internet prairie, Mr. scissorhands2. Life is cheap, and words are cheaper, and messages get deleted all the time. Your best bet is to watch and learn what makes it and what doesn't. The mob around here is the lynchin' sort, and you'll know in short order what comes and goes around here just by watching.

Aside from self-links (as mentioned above and elsewhere on the front page of MetaTalk (as of today)), posts are generally deleted for one reason: They suck. Stick around for awhile, and you will learn what makes a good post. One hint: stay away from any political threads or any post whose aim seems to make you outraged. MetaFilter is about interesting websites and spreading outrage on invidual issues. Some keywords to avoid: iraq, healthcare, abortion, circumcision, declawing, zombo.com, dhoyt, beans, and portobello. You'll notice others over time, if you become a consciencious reader.

No, I think it should be AlexReynolds's. It's a matter of taste and choice of style guides. But I think the good rule-of-thumb is to follow pronunciation. Which can be problematic because of a chicken-and-egg thing for some people. Anyway, that usually means eliding the possessive s for plurals but not singulars.

Yep, I'm with you on the pronunciation apostrophe, EB. My mistake was the misspelled name, though, because of misplaced apostrophe action. I'd say REN-uhldz in the sentence, so I'd write Reynolds'. Unless I botch it and put the apostrophe after the D and shear the S off the end of the name.

I can't see why that has to be the case. Why couldn't someone respond with, say, a four paragraph argument in favor of socialized medicine or a three paragraph explanation of why the linked post is ignoring important information?
If you had said that the linked post is short on substance and long on blathering, I would have agreed with you. However, I still wouldn't have considered it an adequate reason for deletion since I'm, as a rule, opposed to all deletions.

scissorhand2, I sent you an email explaining what was going on. A few people in this thread have also given you some decent explanations. While MetaFilter does have some political type posts, it's not really a "let's talk about politics" blog the way that, say, Daily Kos is. The sort of things that go well over there -- big posts about shitty things that corporations do so people can all holler about them being so shitty -- are more the exception than the rule here, though they do happen.
People flagged your post and when I went to look at it it seemed like a link to a ranty blog that wouldn't foster a lot of discussion. If the issue is really important to you, you can try to put together another post on it, but I'd leave it be for now. It seems like you may be having a hard time getting the hang of how the site works and you should stick around a while and figure it out for a bit.

I read some of the Drama Queen thread*, once — and its lesson, which seems worth mentioning in this context and since there are a couple newbies about, is to keep out of any MetaTalk thread posted about you. Do not participate. You won't like what happens.
* Just a suggestion, but this would seem to be a valid way of referring to the thread without Googlebombing some guy's name.

And didn't this dhoyt guy also flame out memorably?
Well, not exactly. But there was this sextuple reach around call out by himself as highsignal where he went after matteo's degradations of himself as jenleigh and then, most memorably, in retrospect, weighed in as himself as dhoyt and told Heywood Mogroot to Get. A. Girlfriend. and then later made a brief appearance of himself as hall_of_robots to wonder if anyone had told matteo. He got axed sometime after all of that when Matt put one and one and one and one together. I don't know about War and Peace but isn't there a novel by William Gaddis that is composed entirely of unattributed dialogue ? Now, while that's exactly not a flame out, that it sure took a lot of chutzpah for a guy writing under three accounts in going after someone being mean to himself as another account to be telling anyone to Get. A. Girlfriend. is not a hard argument to make.

Metafilter is actually a communications medium for an underground cabal. When the time comes to move, posts will be made (by mod sock-puppets) about particular subjects using particular words. But what that means is that any post before The Day which contains such words or subjects must be deleted immediately to avoid setting things into motion too soon. And what will happen when that day comes? You're not cleared for that.

“Vronsky, stalking folks around here is a good way to get a time out or get banned.”
Really? I've never seen that happen. I think you are confused. Maybe if someone were truly egregious about it, they'd get banned. But no one is that thorough, nor do they either want or need to be that thorough. You can sufficiently cultivate your obsession with another member by hitting only one out of every five of their comments. That's why it's ambiguous and why people don't get banned for it.
It's possibly something the community ought to do more to discourage, bringing stronger social mechanisms to bear against it. Especially in MetaTalk threads, even the more mild versions of stalking is fairly tiresome, with the same people showing up inevitably to pummel their foes whenever given the chance. This behavior has no political affiliation and no personality correlations other than perhaps taking things too damn seriously and having a deaf-ear to how much it bores everyone else. I've been guilty of it before I got a sense of perspective—I'm not claiming a pristine virtue. But the personal feuds get old. Some of the people who carry them on are people I otherwise like—it makes me think less of them.

INT. POLICE STATION CONFERENCE ROOM
MEDIUM SHOT
Seated at the conference table in the darkly lit room, slouching, drooling and slovenly, TROOPER VRONKSY gazes upon the bottle of scotch on the table before him with hungry eyes.
VRONSKY
Oh, c'mon, I'm like the son you never had.
TIGHT SHOT
Dressed in the finest silkeries and haberdasheries, the flamboyant CAPTAIN BLAZECOCK F. PILEON approaches tentatively from behind Vronsky, carrying a half-full, heavybottomed glass of scotch in one hand, and an empty cigarette holder in the other.
BLAZECOCK

A haggard VRONSKY pours himself a stiff one and pauses.

An apology for making a crack about how you were reloading and making a two gun and backwards baseball cap video for MSNBC ? Ha!--it's more appropriate now than ever--like Cho, you are playing the victim, like Cho, you have complained about bullies, and, like Cho, you are starting to act creepy. Squint at this:
Now there's an SLOE for you. I would never post it anywhere else but it sure fits the bill here. I made a little crack, more apt in retrospect, as it turns out, than I would have thought. I've got nothing to apologize for. I don't know you from Adam and I don't understand your sudden obsession with me. You've acted like a big whiny baby, er, young white teenage male, going off half cocked and then calling names right and left, and topping it off with your fifteen act play of victimology. You are making a fool of yourself. So, Grow. Up. OK. ?
Here's a clue, for starts: stop playing the victim.

...At the University of Buffalo, more than 500 miles from Virginia Tech, university counselors announced that they were "reaching out to students feeling affected by … the tragedy." In Dallas, area chaplains rushed (uninvited) to Blacksburg, Va., to "be part of the healing process." In Washington, an ordinarily hard-nosed corporate law firm e-mailed attorneys a list of "resources for coping with traumatic events."We're not all victims
Count me out. There's something fraudulent about this eagerness to latch onto the grief of others and embrace the idea that we, too, have been victimized. This trivializes the pain felt by those who have actually lost something and pathologizes normal reactions to tragedy. Empathy is good, but feeling shocked and saddened by the shootings doesn't make us traumatized or special — these feelings make us normal.
Our self-indulgent conviction that we have all been traumatized also operates, ironically, to shut down empathy for other, less media-genic victims. On the day of the Virginia Tech shooting, for instance, Army Sgt. Mario K. De Leon of San Francisco (like the Virginia Tech victims) died of "wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire"). On Wednesday, car bombs killed at least 172 people in Baghdad. But no one has set up a special MySpace page to commemorate those dead.
Now there's an SLOE for you. I would never post it anywhere else but it sure fits the bill here. I made a little crack, more apt in retrospect, as it turns out, than I would have thought. vronsky, dude. This is a subtle point in social interaction, but sometimes the way to retain your hand is to let go. For example, if you're talking with someone at a party, and they come back with a ferocious, witty, uproarious smackdown—you could spend all night coming back with mild retorts and hoping that one of them clicks, but what you can also do is just laugh! That's it!
Anyway, this is how you call out y2karl without long-term fallout.

And I bowed out with, "I do realize that this thread is somewhat of a mistake, because apparently anyone who calls anyone else out has to have extreme hatred for the person they're calling out and be representative of everyone who's ever been in disagreement with the person targeted and be a sort of metaphor for all the ills in the void perceived by people who support the targeted. My apologies." And then didn't react when delmoi unloaded on me with invective.
In our field of art, this is called the passive-aggressive apology. It's not the best form possible, but it lets you pamper your inner resentment while still retaining some semblance of grace.
And it's leagues better than going around asking for an apology, which would be pathetic even if the person you're asking to apologize didn't have much more social capital than you.

(recycled) No cabal? Then how am I going to watch HBO?
y2karl, I don't think you're being stalked, vronsky is much more the Attention Whore striking out at whomever will give him a response. The first few hours of the original thread before you discovered it he appeared to be redirecting his schtick at those of us who derided his original attack on you. But now that he sees he's bothering you, you're trapped. I was thinking that with a little verbal jujitsu we might be able to send him off on a simultaneous attack on amberglow and dios (but Dizzy may need to bake some 4/20 brownies to achieve the optimum effect).
That said, there are so many apologies owed from one user to another at this site still outstanding that a karmic repo man would be busy for years... I'm sure at least a couple dozen MeFites feel I owe them apologies, half of whom I would immediately agree with if I could remember what I did wrong. And who owes ME an apology? I try to avoid taking any of what happens here that seriously... and usually succeed.

Firas that was brilliant, and I promise this is the last you will ever hear of me and karl. Reading that thread was like deja vu all over again. But I am not as nice or as bright as you.
and fuck esprit d'escalier, the internets have done away with that.
I've spent a lot of time at tech karl, but please show me where I claimed victimhood or complained about bullies. I complained about cowards. I didn't say anything other than I was a little sad and a little angry. Try reading what I wrote, I'll be right here to help you with any big scary words. The la times link was priceless. I bet you have a subscription or something. And the quotes were just so damn enlightening. Try some critical thought once and a while, don't just parrot everything you read.
So cool karl, you are obviosly nuts, you will never hear from me again. Ever. Stay in your shitty little house in your scummy bathrobe and collect your disability checks. And whack off to some porn. It is the closest you will ever get to a real woman. And post away.

Well and good, then. Life is not about insulting strangers you have never met over conversational trifles. While it gives me the supreme pleasure here to not have said anything as vile and insulting to you as you have said to me, I still feel embarrassed for you. I really do. But you know what ? I am even more embarrassed that I said anything to you at all. So, there it is. Oh, well. Carry on.

Aww l-hat needs some attention, being the big fish in this small pond. How like him to pop in at the end after all the fighting has been done and make his usual niminy-piminy remarks. I will certainly extend that promise to you l-hat. And since you seem to be the leader of the mob when it comes to flameouts, I will repeat for emphasis.
"flameouts are banal. You all look like a bunch of fucktards, the kind who would gather in a crowd and yell "jump" to someone standing on a ledge. Too cowardly to enter the battle of wits, but hungry for someone's blood."

MrMoonPie: After rereading this and the other thread I'm inclined to say the guy's already jumped five or six times already, but, with Wyle E. Coyote-like imperviousness, he dusts himself off with practiced nonchalance, scurries up five flight of stairs, and gets right back up on that ledge. Ah, the firetrucks, the milling crowd below, the spotlight...
That he's now accusing languagehat of being the attention whore gives me the chuckles something fierce. And I haven't seen any evidence that vronsky's actually packing any heat for this "battle of wits" he's yammering about.

the battle of wits
The thing is vronsky, there never was a battle of wits. You have managed to misread these threads every step of the way. I don't think you can get the proper perspective unless you wait a few days or a week -- without making any posts or reading Mefi at all -- and come back and read what has actually gone on here. Then you might realise that discretion (ie. shutting up while the going is good) is the better part of valour. So: give it a rest mate.

Do we get to do that? If I reposted the links from your deleted post, in a blahblah informative paragraph:
Night Flight aired Friday and Saturday nights on the USA Network from 1981-1988 in the heady early days of cable. It was one of the first places to see underground films and shorts, music documentaries, and conceptual, artistically-intended music videos -- not to mention MST3K-style parody and general weirdness.
... that'd be ok? I wouldn't get cakkake'd?

Presentation matters; putting together a clear post on Night Flight would help a lot more people know what's going on with it, certainly.
Note that presentation isn't definitive—unclear posts on interesting things don't always get deleted, and impeccably presented posts of shitty links will get nuked sometimes. I didn't really look at vronsky's post one way or the other—didn't have time to dig into The Mystery Videos when I saw it—but jessamyn may have nuked it as a combined reaction to unclearness + vronsky-being-really-antagonistic-lately.

Comrade Dizzy, your offer of marzipan to comrade vronsky has been duly noted. As comrade vronsky's status is currently being evaluated, please note that this offer may, in future, be counted as in your favor, or may be be counted against you. A decision will be made at the proper time, and you may or may not be notified about them.
Also note that the Central Committee has not (as of yet) determined whether 'marzipan' is to be classified as 'cake'. If, upon review, it is not classified thusly, the repercussions for you could be dire. All in all, comrade Dizzy, you would appear to be walking on thin ice here. It is recommended that you go back and reread some of the Cake Leader's early manifestos, to restore revolutionary Cake zeal.
