Lofi for Metatalk? August 5, 2003 5:40 AM   Subscribe

Is there an equivalent of lofi.mefi for metatalk? Miguel's rambling novel-writing-question seems to have been canned, and I want to see a) What Matt said about it, and b) what all the snippy comments after mine looked like. How about it?

Yeah, I missed it too. I'm still sulking.

There is no "lofi" MetaTalk.

Sorry, pal.

I prefer being able to forget that Miguel thread ever existed. Thanks for jogging my memory.

Count me amongst the sulkers. Damn stupid time zones.

bonaldi,

next time (it'll happen again, sadly) you just need to save the thread if you find it funny/sad/scary/all of the above.

MetaTalk deletion means that it will be impossible to reload the thread

This thread should get canned, but be referenced in another. The thrill of thread envy will grow with each remove.

Give me a break, XQ. As Rory so eloquently said, MetaFilter is made up of actual people, and some of us enjoy doomed meltdown threads, even though Matt doesn't like them. Yes, he deleted it, and we all understand why. Nevertheless, some of us would like to have a record of it to chuckle over. Is that so terrible? Sheesh.

A Miguel thread got canned?

FUCKING HELL ! The terrorists aint winnin' after all.
posted by Frasermoo at 7:48 AM on August 5, 2003

I understand that, languagehat. But since Matt doesn't like them, he has the right to get rid of them, and much as I also enjoy contributing to lost/doomed threads now and then, when Matt deletes it I don't complain "hey, why did you get rid of that thread? It was doomed for deletion!"

So XQ, can you tell just by the taste what Matt had for lunch yesterday?

Seriously though, I do agree, if I was running a website I wouldn't tolerate much crap, especially not keep it around so the fool who did it can look at it later while I pay for the hosting.

It would encourage others to act in a like manner in order to have their bad [good?] threads immortalized for all to see--forever.

"it's matt's site and he can do whatever he blah blah"

We knew that already. Anyone who repeats this should expect to be called an apple-polisher.

And I still think that thread should have been deleted and never spoken of again.

:) shoo wee. What happened? Did Miguel confess his undying love for Matt while in a state of intoxication?

Can we get a FAQ for questions that have been asked a million times in MeTa, perhaps?
posted by angry modem at 9:29 AM on August 5, 2003

"Can we get a FAQ......"

There's a link on the main MetaFilter menu that will take you to the good stuff.

The point, surely, is that putting the merits of reading deleted threads to one side for a moment, the ability is already there in mefi. I just wondered if it was there for MetaTalk too.

It's a shame it isnt. Schadenfruede is not only hard to spell, it's fun too.
posted by bonaldi at 2:07 PM on August 5, 2003

matt, regardless of how he feels about the issue has another problem: the two "sections" of metafilter have diverged codewise over a few years - i think it would at this point be a daunting task with little or no payoff (from matts perspective) to attempt to bring all the widgets, ponies and geegaws he's wedged into the blue, into the gray.
posted by quonsar at 2:26 PM on August 5, 2003

ponies? ponies!?! There's ponies wedged into the blue and you guys didn't tell me?! Oh, man, you all suck!...

So what was the thread about?
posted by feelinglistless at 3:00 PM on August 5, 2003

So, uh... Matt can do whatever he wants with his site. We can complain but it ain't gonna make a bit of difference. There still isn't a pony in my driveway and this question has only been asked 999,999 times.

Now, let's get to what I care about. Would somebody just tell me what happened in the Migs thread? Feel free to copy and paste.

migs got beat on. migs got defended. someone said "autofellatic". quonsar showed off his furry barnacle encrusted buttcrack. migs got beat on some more. what's to tell?

So, what was the original subject of the thread?

Writing books? That doesn't seem so controversial...

The Post, As I Remember It:

"It was bound to happen. I am writing a novel wherein a MeFi member is momentarily challenged over his attitude towards women. His basic character template is stereotypical American leftist, but he has some custom features: He is from San Francisco and/or Vancouver, he is reassuringly gay, he is a hard worker, he is alone by choice, he is snide when appropriate, and he wears a remastered Van Halen CD as an earring. Which member fits this profile? I need to flesh out this thinly-drawn little dud(e), and I would appreciate y'alls' help."

Anyone have anything to add? Rewrites? Edits?

"what all the snippy comments after mine looked like":
It was the best of memes. It was the worst of memes.
Then I indicated that Miguel's stereotype insulted men and that he should include a stripper. ;-P

Opus Dark, you have a positively elephantine memory!

Add: "He is poor, but by choice, not by circumstance. He is a Jew, but also an atheist." There was something about him being 'too clever by half' in there too.

If Miguel truly said "y'all" the thread NEEDED killin'. T'ain't natural.
posted by konolia at 4:25 PM on August 5, 2003

I dunno if the CD earring would work in San Fransisco; it wouldn't in Vancouver. And of course he couldn't be a stereotypical American leftist, unless it's Vancouver Warshington.

You know, he really shouldn't have bothered with an anti-feminist rant - he could just have got the character to post to MeTa about, ooh, taking a MeFi-related picture or some such. That would have wound everybody up into a beatdown

I'm really sorry I posted that. Sorry, Matt and everyone else. It was pure self-indulgence. I'm in the middle of a novel where a MetaFilter user is a minor character and I was carried away. Just like one of those poor creatures asking for help with their homework.

I apologize sincerely. I know I've done it before but I still hope I won't do it again.

As penance you must start posting in English on Pastilhas (or at least translate a few choice entrees from the archives).

As a sign of repentance, I shan't follow my evil devil's advice - you know the little cartoon guy on my left shoulder, with the quonsar's face of bonhomie and the wonderchicken's lithe body - to correct Opus Dark's hilarious recollection of my post, thereby reopening the justly deleted thread and garnering the very responses of "the typical MeFi user" I craved for my romance.

"I apologize sincerely."

There is no need. We all have our MeFi demons to bear. Mine is a spastic and mordant demon. Yours is a pedantic, donnish demon.

Long ago I decided that as worthless and boring as I was, many people actually found entertainment in my follies and stupidity. You should learn this as well. There is no need to apologize. Your pure self-indulgence is a source of mirth and merriment. Your misadventures are legion and legend. Your articulate disregard for protocol is what makes MetaTalk....... well........ whatever it i
