Protocols of the Elders of Awesome was banned? When & why did that happen?
He was suspended for incoherent drunk rambling in his FPP last night, but now that he is sober he's very sorry about the whole business and eager to once again make worthy contributions to this community.

Pffft. If he's gone, he'll be back. I don't know what you have to do to actually get perma-banned, but fucking with AskMe and hijacking other people's accounts isn't enough, that's fer sure.

Yeah, true. I had to pull his posting rights because he was too drunk to have enough sense to stop. I've banned him for being an asshole using several accounts, again when using several hacked accounts, and now drunken rambling. For all his wisecracks and rare fine links, he sure posts a lot of noise, so I was letting him stew in the drunk tank for another day.
How many chances are people supposed to get to act like a fucking adult? I'm at the end of my patience with him.

I didn't want to start a new Metatalk thread because I didn't think this is a situation that needs that much public attention. The only reason this is in Meta at all is because Matt didn't respond to Protocols' email (and he still hasn't) so he didn't know the status of his account.

I used to run online communities for a living and these kinds of people eventually drove me kinda crazy. Crazier than they should've, anyway. There's always a small percentage of people who manage to create most of the problems... (Hey! Somebody page Gladwell!)
You can never really ban someone who really, really wants to come back and cause problems. You'll always lose. Sure, you can raise the bar in terms of how hard it is to get back in with a new nickname or whatever, but it's easier just to passively track people while they think they're being clever.
Although I never had a chance to implement it, I believe I've hit apon the ultimate solution: let them post into the void. Any message they write is completely visible to them and appears normal, but no one else can see their scrawls. Maybe even let them create an alternate universe where other similarly banned people can flame away at each other, that sits on top of what us normal, civilized folks see.
That way, they can satisfy whatever childish urges they have without bothering anyone.

You're right, obviously. And the $5 bar makes this a thousand times more pathetic — because a lot of trolls will persistently sign-up new accounts on free websites, but it takes a special kind of loser to pay $5 for the privilege. (The same kind of loser, I suppose, who gets drunk and posts on a friggin' internet message board. What, no parties or girls where you live?)
Having said that: This shmuck wasn't hiding. Everybody knew who he was — and I've seen Jessamyn acknowledge it, which means Matt must have known. If the "ban" carried any weight, he'd have been smacked down again, immediately. We wouldn't have this nonsense about a drunken spree and umpteen chances. He'd just be gone, as many times as it took.
This isn't a ban. This is a vending machine saying, "Another $5, please."

I know for a fact that Matt has already thought of this. He mentioned it during a panel discussion at SXSW a couple years ago about how to deal with problem characters on online communities. It seems like it would be an ideal solution, but once the person realized that they were being systematically ignored, the result would probably be identical to permanent banning ... i.e. $5 more to crap all over the site anew.

Hmm ... at this yet again, I see.
I can't remember what it was that Pretty Generic did that got him banned the last time ( I get these dorks all mixed up) but I do recall being fairly flabbergasted that he was allowed to return. My own feeling is that if the behaviour is so extreme that an outright ban was imposed ( as opposed to a "time-out" ) then allowing the offending poster to return is pretty much self-defeating.
I'm guessing that our two mods can identify members from their IP addies, and so know who applies for admission. Choosing to readmit offenders with a different nick is one possible policy. Surely, some offenders must be redeemable. But only if there is a fresh start. This site isn't the 16,000 member in-group it once was. That particular poster's history here doesn't carry much weight with the other half of this group.
Allowing someone who repeatedly shows contempt for the minimum standards required here to return without any real penalty doesn't set that much of a bar. To be effective as a policy, I wouldn't broadcast it. Losing all cred should be a consequence of being banned. What other currency is on offer here? If the 2 ( pretty easy-going) mods we have here have been driven to the point of frikken banning you, it's time to reassess your behaviour . If they've done it twice, I'd say you're really pushing your luck.
Seriously.

Matt, when people are banned, are you banning the username and they can just auto sign up again for another fin or are you banning the IP (not that that's foolproof)? I'm just curious.

This isn't a ban. This is a vending machine saying, "Another $5, please."
No, this is me thinking it over. I'll give him a week and think about it again.
You might be assuming a little too much control, here, Matt. Whether or not this person is accusing you of inviting a new signup, the banned user may indeed just register for one. It's not been demonstrated what you're doing, if anything, to prevent this. Do you use cookies, IPs, logs, etc to do any kind of fraudulent account detection? If you're lax about that stuff, you make it look like you're happy to accept $5 from anyone, and bannination, your graetest weapon, loses its power.
I don't think your response quite answers the real questions. Try again?

Wouldn't that just result in more of the same sort of thing in MetaTalk "Hey PotEoA said he wrote something hilarious but I can't see it. Why did that happen?" The problem doesn't seem to be that PotEoA/PG gets temp-banned, the problem is that any time this sort of thing happens, there is a total disconnect between the level of mess that has to be cleaned up (removing comments/posts, tracking down sock puppet accounts, dealing with tons of MeTa threads, for example) and the "Who Me?" attitude that's always displayed by him and his compatriots. For example
The only reason this is in Meta at all is because Matt didn't respond to Protocols' email
Which must have been sent, what, half a day or a day ago from someone in a totally different timezone? If you or PotEoA/PG are really looking for answers, try harder. Get mathowie on IM, or email or IM me. Starting a new MeTa thread just turns this into a big "Grade my report card!" public lament of the sad state of one user who can't seem to get it together to not abuse the site.
I don't mind terribly if PotEoA/PG comes back too much personally -- my vote would be no if we were voting, but I don't feel that strongly -- but anyone who thinks he hasn't had ample chances here, or gotten ample leeway from mathowie on second, third and fourth chances isn't really paying attention.

He's a fixture here at Metafilter, and we keep him around for his hilarious hijinks and inscrutable banter with that adorable thirteenkiller, right? So what if his actions made it so we now have to enter in some hard-to-read code every time we log in? And didn't he do us all a favor? Why, he pointed out serious security vulnerabilities against inelegant, brute-force hack attacks! One can't stay mad at the rascal forever, right?
So Matt, let's just stop this silly charade and let the scamp back in, before he's forced to come up with another festive sockpuppet name. Either that, or let's all chip in and finally get the boy laid, and maybe then he'll work off some of his excess energies in pursuit of more carnal pleasures.

Then you should have linked to it, not least because you didn't quote the bit you found 'especially funny' and this would also have dated the comment for those not familiar with it.
I didn't for one second think you were trying to 'fool' mathowie, but it did cross my mind that you were trying to rally more support to the PG apologists' increasingly tedious cause.

How do you keep up the persona, without having to periodically pay your $5 sockpuppet fee?

...some people know him well enough to know he's an actual human being on not the devil incarnate?Oh, for Christ's sake. Nobody cares. We're not talking about how this putz behaves in a bar, or in your apartment, or at the circus, or wherever the hell you spend your time. Maybe he's a great friend and maybe he spends every Sunday working in a soup kitchen. On this website, he's a fuck-up, and he should be banned from using it.

they DID try to contact matt, but he didn't get back to them fast enough for them
Well, P_G tried to contact Matt, and after a few hours with no response, thirteenkiller apparently decided we all needed something more appropriate to the gravity of the occasion. I think it's pretty obvious at this point that rather than a simple answer to the question, "How long is P_G banned for this time?", what thirteenkiller was going for was some way of publicly announcing the ban, without taking the risk of posting a MeTa thread herself. So she piped up in a completely unrelated thread, jonson rose to the bait, and - voila - they got their little public spoogefest.
Yeah, I'd say 'creepy' about covers it.

Yes, between the conversations I'm having and the hockey game I'm watching, I really ought not dedicate the immense amount of time it takes to refresh this page (or click a link to this page when brought to attention) before I head off to work. I might burn myself out.
I didn't say he was too invested, which isn't really a good way to put it anyhow. I'm sure no one is refreshing obsessively while doing nothing else. I said he is overanalyizing things. He's being vindictive and self-important, as well.
Thanks for the attempted burn though, hopefully with time and perseverance I will recover.

my theory is that twelvetwo, p_g, and poteoa are the same person, and that thirteenkiller is their live-in girlfriend.
and they're in a crappy garage band but they have like totally a ton of friends on myspace so they'll get picked up really soon by tooth and nail and sell a whole assload of albums. then they'll get married, in some retarded ceremony precided over by the drummer - but that won't be enough - they'll actually go get a marriage license. And then they'll start to fight about what to do with the $7500 they made selling t-shirts and cds for $30 at their shows in Ann Arbor. So they'll get into some nasty drama, there. god. and we'll all find out about it. somehow. the divorce. the pregnancy. and maybe someone will make a thread about it in the brown but frankly I couldn't care less - I mean I kinda liked thirteenkiller but after I put two and two together? no way.
this thread is so big. so big.

This thread is like a jonson litmus test for who is funny & who isn't, even without actual jokes being told in the thread. The aggressively uptight Peeg MUST BE BANNINATED OR I SHALL NEVER SLEEP AGAIN group, while remarkably amusing seem to be absolutely devoid of humor. That Michael Landon comment, on the other hand, that was pretty damn funny.

So, the scenerio is this: A hacker had brute-forced a very old metafilter account. He then contacted P_G (randomly?) and asked him if he would like to use this account as a sock puppet. P_G, being the polite guy that he is, said "sure, I'll use it, it would be rude of me to refuse your request." He then began using the account until matt figured out what was going on and banned him. P_G's response was then "Hey, I was just using it because someone asked me to!" There is also some coldfusion exploit somewhere in there.
However, the more likely case is this: P_G or some other member of his band of merrymen had been brute-forcing old accounts with the intent to fuck with the site. Once caught using the old account, P_G came up with a lame excuse and pleaded ignorance.
And that would be reasonable if he wasn't already known for enjoying fucking around here. But, since that isn't the case, that doesn't hold any water.

Mid: You should work on your paraphrasing skills. Whether or not I am a dork was not question (feel free to draw your own conclusions), nor is it relevant to reading Metafilter or watching hockey. You're missing the point offered up, which was that I was doing several other things aside from making replies 10, 20, or more minutes apart. The further point was that my so-called "investment" was not even relevant as I didn't claim anyone was overly invested to begin with.
Oh wait, but it is Friday! I should be out drinking raw sewage and banging strippers! Except for the fact I had to work at half-past midnight...
Baby_Balrog... I didn't intend for my jab to be mean-spirited, though it occurred to me shortly after that it probably is going to seem that way.
