Hey there! No big thing, but it's time for a general reminder post about what's okay and what's not with sockpuppets, alternate accounts, Brand New Days, and other multiple-accounts-related stuff on Metafilter. [more inside]

I should probably know this but if I ever did, I've forgotten, and I'm drawing a blank hunting around right now. Is there a way to MeMail someone who has disabled his/her account, or otherwise find useful contact info from their page? [more inside]

Disabled accounts show up in "nearby users." I clicked on this profile
and then had to click on this username
(because, WTF? Was santorum taken?). Well, to make matters slightly weirder, a search for santorum
brings up the username and the user's "real" name, though it's no longer visible in the profile.

Lately, I've noticed that quite a number
I've enjoyed have disabled accounts. Are the majority of those people closing accounts leaving of their own accord?

Are there any Mefi user accounts that have a coincidental (or intentional) relationship with their user number? [more inside]

Reindeer filter: when giving someone a gift MetaFilter account, could it be possible to write a few lines to this person, like explaining what is Mefi, or why you give it now (best wishes, joining the fray, season's greetings, etc.)? It would help for performing "Santa's magical dance"

Hey, I see we now have a "This account is disabled" flag to slap on banned users' profiles. Any other additions along these lines?

Is it kosher to sell your MeFi account to someone else?

Currently in beta: give a mefi account as a gift
. I think all the bugs have been worked out. You put in your friend's email, pay the five bucks, and they'll get an email letting them pick a username, password, and other details. If you try it out, let me know if you or your friend gets any errors.

Is it at all possible to buy gift MeFi memberships to others? Answers in comments, please.

Ok, here's a question about AskMeFi questions: how come people are always asking questions "for a friend"? Is it that they are REALLY asking for themselves and pretending to ask on behalf of someone else? Or are people really that helpful? Am I a total jerk for thinking that if one of my friends wanted to post a question to AskMeFi I would tell them to create their own account, it's $5 for pete's sake? What piece of the puzzle am I missing here?!?

I never use this name/account, so I was wondering if anyone was interested in taking it over...

in most communities, you can leave when you're ready to move on.

Haven't yet registered at that other site
? Plastic.com's own Carl Steadman
is running a special promotional offer
for MeFi addicts: sign up with your MeFi username and receive, for the low-low price of free, 10 karma and 10 mod points.
Now the question remains: What can Matt offer Plastic.com users in return? Perhaps registration itself is enough of an incentive.

Now that it's becoming a trend (#1
), does anyone else think publicly sharing accounts to circumvent site registration is a bad idea?

So the FreeSpeech
guy came back today. For those that have never heard of him, he's also PrivateParts
, and PatMcGroin
among other accounts.
In the past, I've deleted his most inflammatory posts and banned his IP range and accounts. His real name is Mike Allen, and he works as a temp, so he gets a new IP range with every new job. I know he lives in LA, and I've been told he's a 36 year old guy that lives to fuck with chat rooms and message boards.
He contends that I'm a "self-righteous left wing politically correct little prick who cant take a fucking joke on your precious site" and that I'm a censorship nazi that can't handle his right wing views. He calls Aaron
a pussy and claims that aaron is a moderate (I pointed out that there are non-abrasive right wing members of MetaFilter that never get banned).
His email is firstname.lastname@example.org
and I don't know what the fuck to do about him. I just told him to stop, but he basically told me to fuck off and he'd keep it up forever and that the site deserves to be torn down by him.
He's the user I always feared existed. The freak with unlimited time and not a care in the world, someone that would do anything in their power to destory whatever you've built. Someone that won't listen to reason, and doesn't care to debate anything.
What the fuck am I supposed to do? I'm tired of following around and picking up his messes these past few months, and I don't want give up and let him win, but what else is there to do?
