Happy Moderator's Day! June 12, 2012 1:34 AM   Subscribe

Summer is not just the time for a MetaTalk queue. It also brings June 13.

Metafilter is undoubtedly my favourite place to hang out on the internet. The moderators are a huge part of making that possible.

Thank you, mathowie, jessamyn, cortex, restless nomad, taz, pb (and vacapinta), for all the work you do to make this place so wonderful, and the patience with which you do it.

MeFi mods rock!

I'd like to thank my parents, my husband and my dog, without whom this great honor would not be possible, and I'd like to add that any concurrence of dates with Secret Paint Huffing Mefite Cabal Day is purely coincidental. Or possibly impurely intentional, and, of course, I love you all!

You know, I used to work a salaried job and when I did I wasn’t lucky enough to have a job that society deemed day worthy. Yeah, the mods work hard, but so do the people working at McDonald’s but you don’t feel the need to give them a special day do you? Well why not?

I know it's completely irrational, but I truly thought you were talking about our birthdays when you posted this.

In that regard, having for our moderators these revered Æsir, fertilising the rich loam of our thoughts with the tart urea of their prudence and the lusty blood-and-bone of their encouragement is the best present a person could wish for.

Except for world peace and stuff, but it already has a day that's someone else's birthday.

Is there a collective noun for mods? I mean, is the correct sentence:

We have a great bunch of mods?
We have a great group of mods?
We have a great gaggle of mods?
We have a great pod of mods?
We have a great troupe of mods?

or, of course:

"Look at that bunch of mods!"
"Herd."
"Heard of what?"
"Heard of mods."
"Sure I have heard of mods; I keep complaining about them on MeTa!"
"No, no, a mod herd!
"What do I care what a mod heard? I've got no secrets to keep from mods!"

As near as I can tell it's the 12th here and where bardophile is, so I think she is just giving us a jump on the holiday so people can get their shopping done. And thank you!
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:09 AM on June 12, 2012

Is this entire thread an hilarious jest, the comprehension and appreciation of which is limited to a select and elite few? A day for celebrating moderators must be the most pathetic and disgusting proposal that has ever been put forward on the MetaTalk agenda. I demand that the original poster hereof should immediately commence feeling ashamed of his- or herself to an UNPRECEDENTED degree.

Those notorious comment-cutters and post-pruners that we have entitled "moderators" should NOT be celebrated with a day-long period of exultant praise.

No - an entire MONTH of festivities is not enough for this team of heroes and himroes. A YEAR of worship would not scrape the merest centime from the vast debt they are owed. A LUSTRUM of our devotion would only amount to a rubbery FART in their sacred and majestic faces.

I therefore propose that the mods be replaced by me, and as the new supreme leader of MetaFilter I shall immediately announce a permanent state of emergency worship, also of me. It is a heavy burden that I take up, but I am sure you can all suffer under it. Please therefore vote #1 quidnunc kid in November and prepare bardophile for human sacrifice - I very much intend to be a jealous God.

jessamyn: "As near as I can tell it's the 12th here and where bardophile is, so I think she is just giving us a jump on the holiday so people can get their shopping done. And thank you!"

Yes, and don't forget about the people who spend Moderator's Day Eve with one side of their family and then bundle all the kids in the car early in the morning to spend Moderator's Day itself with the in-laws.

Truly, thanks again to all the moderators for making this such a fantastic community.

The one year I remember to put "Post a Moderator's Day thread to MeTa" on my calendar for June 13th and I get sniped 20 hours too early.

It is obviously not 'cabal.' there is no cabal. A pack of commenters is a 'snark,' a group of posters is a 'blather,' but for mods?

A 'banc' would be my suggestion.

I know what you mean, languagehat.

I mean, I definitely appreciate the mods, but it was getting a little ridiculous with all the holiday advertising and the mall being packed, and the radio playing nothing but "Now Rest Ye Merry Modwomen" and "It's The Most Favorited Time Of The Year" and that awful Adam Sandler song for the six weeks.

When I was a kid, I remember when you didn't put up any mod's day decorations until after Memorial Day, but now it's like you've gotten the kids out of their Equinox costumes and they expect you to go out shopping again.

Like I said, I want to celebrate the true spirit of mod's day. I just think it's gotten too commercial.
