💖 Announcing February "Doubles Jubilee" Theme Month! 💖 February 1, 2022 3:54 AM   Subscribe

Happy February 1, everybody, and welcome to get-out-of-jail-free double posting month, in which everyone is invited to repost the best of old posts from the archives, either yours or someone else's. Here's how to do it:

Look through your favorites and bookmarks and find cool old posts that you believe need more love; check the link(s) and update if the old link doesn't work; make your post reintroducing the subject and include a link to the original Mefi post; tag with "DoublesJubilee" so readers can find all the delightful reposts.

We made a heads-up post and answered a couple of questions about this here. From that thread:

  • You can repost any topic, but it needs a link or links that work — doesn't need to be the same link as the original post, but it can be if that url is still working. Can also be an archived copy of an original link. You can also add additional links.
  • A lot of sites still exist and still have their older content, but have reorganized so it's not at the original link. Often just searching the site name and the keyword(s) will get you to the right place if they don't have a redirect link at the original. Some content is on blog platforms that have shut down, but searching the blogger's username or real name, or the exact title will find it on, say, the original poster's personal site. And where there's no hope of retrieving the original item, if it's interesting and unusual and not a complete one-off, there's likely to be other good content about that subject ... And we mustn't forget the Wayback Machine to help rescue some content.
  • if the content is good enough for an FPP, it doesn't matter that it came from a Mefi subsite. So, yeah, if you want to post a great Ask Me or Music post from the past, go ahead, but post it on the blue, not in the subsite, where things might become confusing.
Let us know if you have any questions, and if you'd like us to check out your individual (re)post, we'll be happy to have a look; just contact us.

Happy Happy Double Double Posting Posting!!

Would it count as a self-link if someone reposted their own old post? Asking for a friend.

You can definitely repost your own post! Tell your friend!

oh, there's gold in those posts. like searching tags 'card' just a plethora of good writing but 404 on linkage. I remember talking about this in a thread and the incredible Whelk then did this.
perhaps not a direct influence, but comments then and now can give good post material.
I remember this post. I wanted it to be my like 3rd post but it's very good. I might find the modern equivalent and do a mash up.

I think Matt had Scott on a loop piped in the mines when PB was fixing the cold fusion reactors.

Actually, I have done this very thing from time to time recently for one reason or another or more.

The Last Flight of Dr. Ain, for example.

The story came to mind last year and I thought it would be a timely and appropriate post what with the pandemic and all. First I did a search to find out if anyone had posted it on-site.

And someone had. Me. In 2004. In relation to the avian flu, which was the scary virus du jour then. I had forgotten posting it, which scared me. But that was 17 years ago last year -- you try remembering what you posted that long ago. And the link was dead, no one else had posted it since, so the coast was clear as far as I could tell.

Then I read the very short thread there. Which was an unpleasant experience: I got ticked off at languagehat over a comment he made and I said something rude back which baffled him. Hell, it baffled me when I re-read it. It was so stupid -- I had speculated that another story, The Women That Men Don't See, that James Tiptree Jr aka Alice Racoona Sheldon had written was her first story. It wasn't and languagehat corrected me on that.

I was wrong and yet I snapped at languagehat about it. I was rude to languagehat who has been my friend and ally from then until now and who I deeply respect and admire. Why did I get pissed? It didn't make any sense to me. If you want to read it, feel free to look for it but I am not going to link it here -- I am just too embarrassed to do so.

So, I decided to repost it. The new thread was not that much fun either. For one, another member accused her of writing a story deeply rooted in toxic masculinity.. My reaction was What.The.Fuck... Are we on the same planet? I mean, I identified her explicitly as a world famous woman science fiction writer at the top.

He obviously did not know a thing about her or how old the story was. Or so it seemed at the time. And he was entitled to his opinion. Such as it was. His mileage simply had varied by a few parsecs.

And, too, these pandemic times have given us all short fuses, hair triggers and put pulled pin grenades ready to lob in our hands.

So, remember this about re-posts. Whatever you may write on the tin, someone might open a can of writhing worms and freak out. Even so, we ought to be still all in this together. In theory. Always keep that thought in your head.

But it may not be that easy in real on-line life. Try as you can, other people are going to see what they see. Be patient, be kind, be a lamb to the lions. Neither bite back nor stick your head in their jaws.

So, keep this all in mind. Or not.

Now, carry on.

I was very excited to see the Whores of Yore twitter account posting about hedge porn a few days ago. If they release their survey results this month, somebody really ought to repost it with the original Porn in the Woods thread. (Saying this here in case someone else spots it before I do!)
