Here and there across the site, MeFites have started to mention what they/their kids/their friends/their family are going as for Halloween. Tell us about your costume awesomeness. Provide photos for bonus points.
I've searched and couldn't find a post for this, so apologies if there is one and I missed it. I'd like your best/favourite William Carlos Williams "This Is Just To Say" parody poems from the green/blue/grey. I'd also love any other comment on the blue, green or grey that is in any way a parody of an existing text. [more inside]
I was a bit disappointed when the recent thread about Iceland's elections devolved into lolz pretty much from the get go. Would it be possible for us as a community to be a little more conscious of how we approach posts about other countries? [more inside]
With November fast approaching, we're planning the 2016 Holiday Movie Club - join us!
It's been a month of losses for MetaFilter, with three members passing away in as many weeks. This article from the Guardian seems appropriate: It turns out losing online friends feels as bad as the death of 'real life' ones.
Early influential political blogger and longtime MeFite Steven den Beste (also as Steven C. Den Beste) has passed away. A former engineer for Qualcomm and a serious anime fan, he was in poor health and mostly homebound for many years. RIP.
Is there an easy way to see, for each of my contacts or for an individual user who is a contact, things that _I_ have favorited? This would be a quick way for me to remind myself why I have marked that user as a contact. [more inside]
My grandfather is dying. I am on my way to help my uncle and grandmom take care of him. I knew this day would come and at some point in the past I thought I had favorited a comment about how to help the dying let go. I cannot find the comment. Can you all help me find it? It was something along the lines of "it is ok. You did good. We will be ok."but I think there was more than that.
I was inspired by the grin that I see Hillary sporting lately, and how people's voting stories make me remember that this is an awesome historical moment, let's enjoy it! Share 'em when you cast 'em :) [more inside]
Somewhere either on the blue or green someone linked to a YouTube video of a 6 year old playing with their star trek action figures. Spock is wearing an apron. Kirk goes on a mission to trade a hash brown for some eggs. Everyone is in a band. I quote it daily. [more inside]
With so many Mefites volunteering for the coming US elections (some in a coordinated fashion), I think a MeTa is in order. Come on in to share tips, stories, encouragement, and more! [more inside]
If it's October, it's time to plan for this year's secret quonsar swap! The secret quonsar swap is - for the uninitiated - our holiday-adjacent wintery gift exchange (Read About it on the Wiki). Let's talk details! [more inside]
Show us your art! I'm feeling the need for some beauty and some MeFite sharing, so let's see (and/or read about) your favorite object of beauty in your living space (art, tchotchke, design element, whatever) ... whatever it is that's beautiful in your space and brings you happiness from looking at it. Show us your #1, show us your top 5, I just want to see what beautiful things bring you all happiness in your homes!
There is no problem with individuals expressing views critical of Sanders, Stein, Snowden, Greenwald etc. The problem is when an echo chamber develops making pro-establishment-ism the only acceptable position and vehemently jumping on views to the contrary with more emotion than reason. It seems to me that MeFi 2016 has become such an echo chamber. This is no doubt due to the very real threat posed by Donald Trump and the Republican Party, and the consequent necessity of a Clinton win, but has developed to the point where it has the effect of recursively self-amplifying a pro-establishment position and silencing more radical/anarchist/antifa or otherwise anti-establishment views.
I have questions about the rate of increase in commenting over this year's U.S. presidential election period. [more inside]
Hey! I just asked a question in ask.metafilter about a half-remembered historical event, and was wondering if we could make one of the askme categories "history". I think that's a nice broad category that would be useful for past major world events! What think you all?
Is there a possibility that we could have some open threads on FanFare for the upcoming World Series? There are several teams in the mix to this point whose participation could be historic, so interest will quite possibly be higher than ever. I think we did the Olympics and the World Cup, IIRC, so this wouldn't be unprecedented. Is that a thing we could do?
I have an iPhone 6S running iOS 9.3.5 I can't see the comments in Metafilter posts. All other sites seem to display properly, with the exception of one I can think of where an option button appeared on others' phones but not mine. I am logged in. I have tried different Metafilter display preferences. What gives? [more inside]
I recall, but cannot locate, an FPP from a couple years ago (I think) that linked to an article/essay, or maybe a few essays, about the historical development of black pigments and paints. Any help? Thanks! [more inside]
Slots are available in the 2016 Fantasy NHL league, the sixth season starts soon so move fast! Follow the link in my MeFi profile. Friendly league, no experience necessary, just a willingness to be there for the full season. Draft next Sunday the 16th.
There was a webcomic linked to on the blue (I think - maybe a FPP in the past month or so) that featured two guys talking about story/comic writing. The gist was that the one guy was telling the comic author that his stories were too dark, and that they should "lift people up" or something. [more inside]
In the context of a discussion about Trump's hot mic tape, and whether this reflected common experience or not, I recently had a comment deleted. (I can't don't it in the thread or in my activity or recent favorites etc, so I assume it's gone.) [more inside]
I was surprised in the latest election thread to see that Donald Trump's "Grab them by the pussy" comment was bowderlerized when it was printed as a link to a video of the comment, but printed in full when a partial transcript of his remarks was reprinted. Is this something that's just at the disgression of the poster? Otherwise, I'd don't understand the inconsistency. (I think I understand the arguments for and against each method of handling Trump's vulgar language, but having both versions in a single post is puzzling.)
Matthew is now a Category 4 hurricane and the latest forecast has it headed straight up the coast of Florida and points North. MeFites that are fleeing this beast, let us know you're OK and update us if you desire. Once the storm passes, let us know how we can help.
On our user pages, the two numbers tracked for favorites count different things. The first one is a count of how many individual comments I have favorited. The second number is a count of how many times everyone has favorited a comment of mine. The description of that second number, "Favorited by others," is sort of misleading, I think, because it doesn't count individual comments the way the first number does. [more inside]
They said it couldn't be done, but here it is: an episode of the podcast that's just one hour long. Jess and I breeze through the site after a mutually busy month, covering stuff from September 8th through October 4th. [more inside]
I’ve made many posts, and given them lots of tags. Often, I’ve often gotten very specific with them - adding all of the names of the authors of news articles, etc. Lately, as I’ve tried to search for buried threads, I’ve become uncertain that getting so specific has been particularly useful. (Someone looking for a post isn’t likely to remember that it contained a particular news article written by person X as opposed to the article’s topic.) What are your best practices for tagging posts, and your best practices for searching for tagged posts?
Reading the answers to this question I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that the nation of 60 odd-million people that I belong to has been reduced to a bit of a caricature here. Metafilter normally does very well at avoiding stereotypical depictions of different nationalities and/or minorities of many kinds, so I'm curious as to why this rather broad brush approach to the British has been allowed to stand without comment or intervention.
What are the unoffical spinoff sites? There's MetaChat - "an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter." MonkeyFilter, GameFilter - "A good post to Gamefilter is a link or set of links to something that is related to gaming, gamers, or gaming culture." and MeFightClub - " started way back in ye olde 2007 as an offshoot community of Metafilter (a site where members are collectively known as 'Mefites', and that's how we get to 'Mefight' Club), dedicated to having a safe, groovy place to hang out together and play and talk about the games we love." Are there others?
