If I post an anonymous question to AskMe, how long should I wait before I figure it has been rejected?
Fizz suggests: let's have a thread where we can share our Halloween pumpkin carving photos! [more inside]
According to Popular Mechanics, MeFi is one of 50 sites that "made the internet what it is today". [more inside]
This Halloween, a party is to attended. [more inside]
So, I made an FPP. Immediately after I hit Post, I noticed a glaring spelling error. There does not seem to be an edit window for posts that have been posted. I find this unfotunate. Can there be an edit window for them?
I am not in California but all my colleagues and friends are. Please let's have a place for MeFites to share their experiences of the Kincade Fire and others. Stay safe and be smart! People before things, for sure. My boss may lose his beautiful home and stayed until the mandatory evacuation was called - be less stubborn!
Today I posted an AskMe question. So far, half of the suggestions have been deleted as noise. The mods probably did the best job they could of cleaning this mess up, but I wonder if this could be a good opportunity to reflect as a community on how we might be able to lower the frequency of answers that did not meet the criteria laid out in the question.
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! 👻 This week, open thread! But a slightly spooky open thread, full of ghosts! 👻👻👻 Naw, not really, just spooky in the Halloween mood. 👻
Small pony/nitpick: I tried to add a tag to my post about the Chilean protest movement with the text 'Piñera', the name of the president we're protesting against, and the system says: One of your tags couldn't be added because it contained non-ASCII characters or punctuation. It's 2019, we can handle unicode in tags and shouldn't assume the wide variety of human experience can be reduced to 26 letters.
End of another week, let's talk about something not related to politics. Let's chat about breakfast. What is your favorite type of breakfast food? Are you a fan of cereal? If so, what kind? Or maybe you're more into oatmeal. Are you an eggs, bacon/sausage, toast kind of person? Do you like maple syrup on your pancakes? Bagels? How about breakfast for dinner? Or maybe you do not conform to these types of predictable conventions and just eat whatever you want? What about pizza? Or steak? Or noodles? If you hate breakfast and generally skip it, feel free to talk about that too. Love it or hate it, let's talk about breakfast. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
In light of the deletion of a Metafilter comment that pushed back against a racist comment in the Frank Ocean thread, I am requesting that the community discuss the benefits of allowing "push back" comments to stand - especially when those comments are insightful, enlightening and challenge other Mefites to be better members of the community. [more inside]
While I understand the intent and intended consideration behind using the "Books Included" tag on the post for the debut episode of HBO's Watchmen, I don't think it actually makes sense and likely sets a precedent for increasingly complicated use of spoiler tags for show discussion. [more inside]
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, Bella Donna wants to know, "What makes you say "hell, yes!"? What activities, experiences, lifeforms, or fill-in-the-blank things fill you with enthusiasm or make you giddy with pleasure or joy?" [more inside]
I apologize for the late notice on this, but we need someone to take over running secret quonsar if it is to happen this year. secret quonsar - which is our holiday-adjacent gift exchange - is a lot of work, but it makes the community happy. [more inside]
End of another week, and we're just a couple of scary weeks away from All Hallows' Eve, let's talk about candy. What is your favorite candy? What is your most hated? Are you a fan of chocolates? licorice? hard candies? lollipops and sours? Do you have a favorite candy bar? Is there a specific candy from a certain part of the world that you crave that you wish you had access to? As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
My dearest mefites: back in August, I asked for the favor of encouragement from the community to get through a difficult exam. I’m so pleased to report that I PASSED STEP 2 CS! I get to graduate from medical school this December! [more inside]
Here's a first quarterly update on where we're at with site revenue and expenses. We've made some progress from where we were this summer; your help in funding the site is a fundamental part of that. [more inside]
We're updating some site documents today to better reflect contemporary MetaFilter. Today's updates include the New User pages that potential new community members move through when signing up, the site's core guidelines page, and a new document discussing common microaggressions and being mindful about the impact of dominant-culture dynamics on a diverse membership. I'll talk in more detail about all that below the fold. [more inside]
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, Sparky Buttons wants to know, "What is your most recent splurge? This doesn't have to be monetary ... maybe you "wasted" some time doing something enjoyable you don't normally prioritize. Any creative definition of "splurge" is welcome!" [more inside]
Okay, this is totally stupid but it keeps bothering me. I have a lot of trouble updating my profile picture. [more inside]
End of another week, and we're just a few scary weeks away from All Hallows' Eve, let's talk about haunted houses and/or ghost tours. Do you enjoy haunted houses/ghost tours? Do you hate them? Do you get scared easily? Are you into the extreme haunted/fright houses where you have to sign a waiver? Are there any 'real life' haunted houses in your area? Places with interesting or odd history? Let's talk about haunted places. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Boo!
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for a vast swath of LA’s San Fernando Valley as the Saddleridge Fire has spread from Sylmar with 0% containment. Valley MeFites, check in so we know you’re okay, please?
Frequent MeFi favorite podcaster Robert Evans (Behind the Bastards, It Could Happen Here) recently kicked off a new podcast, Worst Year Ever, touching on the horrors of the upcoming US federal election. While opening Tuesday's episode on Biden, Evans' co-host Cody Johnston raised eyebrows about Jake Tapper's recent collaboration with MeFi unfavorite Scott Adams. To describe what sort of man Adams is, Evans cheerfully launched into a description of the 2011 incident in which Adams was caught using a sockpuppet to defend himself after the Blue responded poorly to one of his pieces. MeFi mentioned at 3:00. [more inside]
The current Brexit thread is due to close soon, and it's gone OK, but I'd like to suggest a few ground rules so that the people who need the thread most can get the most out of it. Mainly, I'd like the thread to centre the needs of everyone resident in the UK and Ireland, with space for the frustrations of people in the rest of the EU, too. [more inside]
Either on Ask or maybe...twitter? In the last week someone commented about taking either blueberry+choline or blueberry+inositol to stave off sugar cravings. Does anyone either know of this comment or know about this supplement? Thanks.
It's been a few months since the last hugging hug thread , and things being what they have been recently, it seems like a good time to open another one up. [more inside]

Post anything even remotely related to your username, and tag it #postyourname to capture all that plant-, abstract concept-, or inanimate object- related goodness.
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, mygothlaundry says: "My aunt used to say, 'everyone has a mouse or rat story. Everyone has a snake story. And everyone has a bug story.' I have found this to be true and I would add that everyone has at least one unwelcome wildlife encounter story and often one welcome one." What are your welcome and unwelcome wildlife encounter stories? [more inside]
Jessamyn! Me! Podcast! MetaFilter! Talking! [more inside]
End of another week, let's talk about scary films. We're just a few 'spooky' weeks away from All Hallows' Eve. What are your favorite scary films? Do you have certain movies that you watch every year as a tradition? Have you discovered something new recently? Are you more into classic movie monsters like The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein? Or maybe you're into more modern franchises such as Paranormal, The Purge, Conjuring? Are you on Team Freddy or Team Jason? I'd also love to hear some horror reccomendations from other (non-western) countries around the world, films from Asia and Africa that aren't frequently a part of this conversation. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Boo!
Or so says the NYT.
Did you know that Metafilter is one of Kiva's biggest-ever lenders? Here's a team update, and a call for you to help the team lend even more. [more inside]
