More TIL?

The Today I Learned thread from January has been closed. Can we have another one? TIL that deer like wilted apple leaves. My dwarf Golden Delicious apple tree fell down in the late snowstorm two weeks ago. This afternoon I saw two deer in my back yard eating the wilted leaves off the downed tree. First time I've seen deer in the yard in several years. This evening just at dusk they were back, eating apple leaves again.

Joy in June

I'd like to offer a challenge to our community. Many of us are experiencing Politics and especially Trump fatigue. Some days the flood of bad news and wtf-ery seems incessant, depressing and endless. Why don't we try and counter that a little by filling the front page of the site throughout June with posts about things we like and love? Stuff that makes us laugh, brings us joy or inspires our sense of wonder. [more inside]

June Gloom? No! #JuneJourneys!

As summer approaches (in the northern hemisphere, sorry) and people take to the road, or maybe just look to get away from home and outdoors, let's share fun locations! They can be in your backyard or some place you only wish to visit.

Political economy of Into the Badlands?

I seem to recall reading a great comment somewhere on the site sketching out a critique of the political economy of Into the Badlands. I can't find it in my favorites or in any of the FanFare posts for the show, and can't remember enough keywords to be useful in a Google search. I first read it in the past couple months or so, but it could be older than that. Please help me find it - thanks in advance!

Metatalktail Hour: School's Out for Summer!

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week's metatalktail topic: It's Memorial Day weekend in the US, my kids are already (!!) out of school, so that mean's it's summer! What awesome things do you have planned for the summer? Books, movies, Netflix marathons, actual marathons, trips, hobbies, hanging out, cooking, never cooking, drinking summer booze ... tell us! And if you are one of our many friends from the lovely lands down under, tell us all about your cool winter plans!

What the fucking fuck

In the interest of not cluttering up the massive political thread with expressions of disbelief, let's have a Metatalk thread about how unbelievable all this shit is. [more inside]

The Week You Joined MetaFilter

This recent MetaTalk comment brought up some past bit of history, specifically posts that occurred during the first week of MetaFilter. It had me thinking. Were there any standout or significant posts that you recall from the week that you joined MetaFilter?

Does he or doesn't he? Only his hairdresser knows for sure.

After a two year long campaign of awesome dog posts (40), Johnny Wallflower finally overcomes his obvious Pro-Dog Agenda and finally makes a cat post today. But wait, Johnny Wallflower has also posted about cats you say. Perhaps, but do a paltry 30 cat posts even count? In my heart of hearts I do not believe that Johnny Wallflower has an Obvious Anti-Cat Bias. I have come to believe that he reached Peak Cat on his first time up at bat. How are you going to keep them on the farm once they've seen Liquid Cats?

Need some profile inspiration

My profile so far is really threadbare. I want to make it more interesting but I don't know what to do! Do you have any favourite profiles that'd make good inspiration?

Metatalktail Hour: Brand Loyalty

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week's prompt is from lyssabee, who has used Cherry Chapstick for 30 years: What brands are you extra loyal to? Remember, they're conversation starters, not limiters, so talk about whatever's on your mind!

Adding mltshp and Ravelry support to profile page Social Apps

We're celebrating the launch of mltshp by adding it to the Social Apps options on profile pages (and deprecating mlkshk). While we're at it, we're also adding Ravelry support finally. Details inside! [more inside]

Harry Potter digest-sized fanfic blog with lesser characters?

Someone posted a blog here on MeTa a few years(?) ago that was a series of short fictions on lesser HP characters like Goyle and Lee Jordan and how their lives went after the Battle of Hogwarts. Goyle was a petty criminal turned boxer and Lee Jordan was in a boring desk job instead of a play-by-play announcer like he'd always dreamed of doing. What was that called? Thanks in advance.

Making room for pronouns on the profile page

We've decided to move forward on an idea that's come up in MetaTalk previously: adding an explicit spot for pronouns on MeFi user profile pages. It's a small change: we've tweaked the free-form "Gender" field to "Gender and/or pronouns". [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Very Superstitious

Good Saturday evening, Metafilter! It's time for another metatalktails! This week's topic, from my own brain -- What are your superstitions? I don't think of myself as a superstitious person, but every now and then one pops up that surprises me with its vehemence. Remember, they're conversation-starters, not -limiters, so feel free to talk about whatever's on your mind!

This needs to be a ten hour YouTube video loop

In which a community website moderator and artist of some repute cleans up a stencil -based work and OH GOD THIS IS SO SATISFYING. Recent works by the same artist include fractal images, cubes, and more peeling.

128: DUMPIN' M' BEEF with Jess and Josh

This episode is short, late, and out of control! Things have been busy, so Jessamyn and I finally snuck in a quick hour to record and said to hell with the usual structure, let's just mention a few things we like. Runs a bit under an hour total. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Alter Ego

Good Saturday Night, MetaFilter! Tonight's MetaTalkTail topic comes from DrDr ChuraChura, who just finished her Ph.D.: If you were a plant or animal, what would you be and why? Remember, they're conversation starters, not limiters, so feel free to discuss anything you want!

MetaFeatured Snippets

A little while ago Google introduced “featured snippets” that get listed at the top of a list of search results. (Their perils have already been discussed on the front page.)
Surprisingly, if you search for “cheevos” you’ll get a featured snippet clipped from a blog post by one of mefi’s own. I’m curious if anyone has seen other MetaFilter, AskMe or MetaFilter-adjacent content show up in a featured snippet.

Thank you, Metafilter.

I was just told I got tenure, and it is in no small part thanks to all of you at MetaFilter. I joined the site in grad school, where MeFi both kept me sane and educated me on a lot of topics and perspectives that I otherwise would never have learned about. But the debt I owe you all is more direct than that: my best-cited paper actually came directly from reading a post by griphus in 2012; RAs I hired from MeFi Jobs helped me research two other critical papers; and Ask has come through for me about research and teaching many times. So thank you all, I have been a member of this great community for 13(!!) years, and, despite the ups and downs of the site over that time, I realize how lucky I am to be part of it.
