How does he do that?
Html question: how does Matt get the top table to extend all the way to the top, left and right, with no space? How does he get the Meta-logo and Community 'blog graphics to sit flush with the edges of the page?
Whenever I try something like that, there's always space between the edge of the page and the table and between the edge of the table and the images.

CSS style markup issue -- Is MetaFilter non-compliant?
You have a style element in body. That ain’t kosher, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s causing problems with more standards-compliant browsers.
MeFi and MeTa should be standards-compliant.
How about a standards-compliant version of MetaFilter or MetaTalk?
Disclaimers: (1) ignominious self-link; (ii) tested in Internet Explorer 5.1 and Netscape 6, should work in all CSS-compliant browsers; (c) guaranteed to look hideous in Netscape 4 et al; (IV) XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS validated by W3C.

is there a way to dictate, using valid CSS, an area height using pxs that isn't dependant on content?
(that didn't make sense...)
ref: http://i.jcterminal.com/
i'm trying to make the header area (the orange spot that sez 'pigeon farm') exactly 75 px tall, but for some reason, i'm just not getting it. i think it's a brain fart, cuz i know it's damned obvious.
(this might be off topic, but i didn't see a 'help me with my weblog' section.

Can the stylesheet please be changed to not hard-code the point sizes for text?
This has to be an FAQ, but I couldn't find it anywhere:
Can the stylesheet please be changed to not hard-code the point sizes for text? I really would like to make the text smaller, and IE 5.5 won't ignore those absolute sizes. I hear Opera will, but I'm not ready to switch browsers.

Trying new CSS on Mefi
So I was checking out Eric Meyer's CSS book (the best of any CSS book I've read) this morning, and played around with some CSS I'd never used before. In just a matter of minutes, I had the cool CSS-only bar (there's not a lick of javascript being used for display or collapse, it's all CSS and server side logic) with the show/hide option working (I just add display:none; to the stylesheet if you collapse it).
I've been looking for a way to add more information, and keep people up to date on news and metatalk stuff, without overly complicating the interface. I added cookies to the position you prefer it in, and I currently only show it for IE 5+ on windows, IE 5+ on the mac, and Netscape 6+ on all platforms. You won't see anything in Opera or Netscape 4.x because they didn't seem to want to play right.
If you have any problems with it, let me know, especially if you're using a browser that's screwing things up.

CSS font issue on Linux
I dunno what the deal is, dunno if it is just Netscape for Linux or what, but the class on your pages labeled 'monthday' look very very very pixelized on my screen. Is this purposeful?
