Hey Metafilter healthcare workers, how you hanging in? You managing to look after yourself and stay safe? What’s been lifting your spirits and keeping you going? Alternatively what’s been absolute shit and can diaf?(besides the good sis covid of course.)
Covid Shopping Mall
During the Winter Solstice holiday season, there's a shopping mall. There are MeFites and MeFi-affiliateds who make masks. Perhaps we could support them? There are mask questions on Ask.Me, so there's a market. [more inside]
Should we redirect "but my case is special" COVID-19 questions on Ask?
The answer is always going to be "no." No, you can't visit your daughter for her birthday safely just because the number of cases in her town is declining. No, you shouldn't take a road trip so long as you're only going to stop "a few places" where you might be in close quarters with other people. No, it's not safe to have friends over if you have an immunocompromised roommate, even if the windows are open. No. No. The answer is "no." [more inside]
Can we continue to ensure high-quality COVID information?
The Mefi COVID FAQ requests that posters "Please link to pertinent information from high quality sources, and don't give top-of-the-head "it seems to me" sort of answers."
I am regularly seeing Askmefi responses that do not adhere to this guidance and I worry that Askmefi is contributing to misinformation. I'm hoping we can have a conversation about what can be done. [more inside]
After the pandemic ...
What are you looking forward to doing after the pandemic, or even after restrictions are lifted in you area? [more inside]
Another COVID communication post
Recently, I've seen several AskMe posts where posters have felt the need to engage in harsh critique of self or others in order to fend off AskMe judgment concerning their taking actions during the pandemic that are clearly driven by need (even potential life-or-death emergencies) and not frivolous. This troubles and saddens me. [more inside]
Coronavirus check-in thread #5
It is May 8th and time for the latest check-in thread. As previously ([4][3][2][1])) this is for actual news, updates, personal experiences, and more mutual support from and to people dealing with this virus in their daily lives. All hail the mods for continuing to provide this sanctuary for us, and good health to readers and commenters alike. How is one doing?
silver linings of the pandemic
There's a venting thread, but maybe you want to share a surprising good thing that has happened despite the terrible situation in the world right now. [more inside]
What's eatin', you?
You know what's weird right now? Besides, like, everything? Food. Lots of routines are disrupted, lots of supply lines and food-sourcing habits have gotten all sideways.
So: what's going on with your fooding? How's the whole eating thing? Any happy discoveries or rediscoveries? Any weird surprises? Any big shortage headaches? Any horrible cooking failures? Snacking surprises? Foodly frustrations? Can you buy literally any yeast? Get it out, let's talk all kinds of food stuff, let's do a whole roundup of where everybody's at.
Coronavirus check-in thread #4
It is March 39th and time for the latest check-in thread. As previously ([3][2][1]) this is for actual news, updates, personal experiences, and more mutual support from and to people dealing with this virus in their daily lives. All hail the mods for continuing to provide this sanctuary for us, and good health to readers and commenters alike. How is one doing?
COVID-19, Domestic Edition
Lately I've seen many a fine recipe, sewing pattern and/or general quarantine project idea gracing various COVID threads on the blue, green, and grey. I thought it would be nice to have someplace central to store and chat about that sort of thing. So, are you doing something amazing or hilarious or at least vaguely interesting with your home-bound time? Building something new, cooking or baking something awesome (or at least awesomely terrible?) Reading or watching something that makes you happy?
Whatever you're doing with yourself to make your lockdown time a little less stressful, share it here.

The Covid Card Swap (previously discussed here)is a go! If you want to send cards/postcards/notes of encouragement and connection to other Mefites, follow the simple instructions inside. [more inside]
Corona Virus Check-in Thread no. 3
I can't improve on Gotanda's intro for the last check in thread so here it is again updated:
A third catch-all thread for mefites living in areas directly affected by novel coronavirus (aka SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19) picking up from the last one. Again, please no idle speculation, catastrophizing, or chat. Let's stick to actual news, updates, personal experiences, and more mutual support from and to people dealing with this virus in their daily lives. How you all doing?
Metafilter Mutual Aid for COVID-19
Many local organizations are developing mutual aid organizations of neighbors helping neighbors get their basic needs met (grocery shopping, phone calls for wellness/connection, etc.). I'm working locally in my physical neighborhood, but I consider metafilter my neighborhood as well. Would others be interested in sharing their needs and seeing if anyone in the community can meet them? For example: I have toilet paper to share (as long as you don't mind the recycled eucalyptus sort) and can do grocery shopping for vulnerable mefites in the L.A. area. If you're very low on tp I can mail you some and also toss in some local fruit from our backyard tree. I could use: if you're making fabric masks, I could really use them for my aunt (ICU nurse). She's running low and I'm working extra hours at work (I know, I'm lucky to be working) so I don't have time to sew myself.
Covid Card Swap
One of the Card Club members suggested a Covid-19 card swap event. I think this is a good idea, and wanted to bring it to the larger Mefi community to see what the interest level is.
This would be like the winter holiday or Valentine's Day card swaps, where people are assigned to small groups, and you send a card to the people within that group. As far as I know, there are no covid-specific greeting cards, so these would be pretty free-form -- postcards, "hang in there" cards, short messages of connection and encouragement, wishes for good health, etc. Thoughts/opinions?
Terrified of COVID-19? Want to do something about it? Come sit by me.
Lots of us are terrified without a sense that we can control anything about the COVID-19 pandemic besides staying in our homes. But there are plenty of things we can be doing as citizens to organize and help each other out. Let's create a space to talk about what we are personally doing and why to keep one another safe. Hide or Exclude COVID in AskMeFi ?
Could we get a 'no COVID' filter for Metafilter and AskMeFi sites?
I understand that we shouldn't have sidebar filters for everything, but I do think the COVID posts are multiplying to the level of USPolitical posts and threads.
Am I missing something in the MyAsk preferences--I don't see a way to exclude tags there? thanks for info.
Fuck! Fucking Fuck, Fuck. Pandemic edition.
Everything is cancelled, we're worried about everyone, and the world is upside down. I presume that MeFites, too, need a place to scream. Here it is. FUUUUUUUU-----
(Staying) home is where the heart is.
OK. It's officially a pandemic. Should MeFi IRL suspend operations for the time being?
Dangerous advice on COVID-19 on AskMeFi
People are answering AskMeFi questions about COVID-19 with incorrect advice, endangering at-risk populations. Preventing the use of MetaFilter to distribute dangerous misinformation is a matter of life and death. [more inside]
Finding COVID-19 data visualization comment
I could have sworn I saw a comment about a data visualization of COVID-19 that showed different strains of the virus by location and some other ways. It had a bunch of different charts, including at least one map visualization that you could zoom in, and one bar chart with thin bars and circles at the end of each bar. [more inside]
Coronavirus check-in thread
Catch-all thread for mefites living in the virus in Asia or directly affected. No idle speculation or “it hasn’t come here yet but I think...” chat, but actual news, updates and more from people dealing with the virus affecting daily life.
