MeFi ReCurrents

An Immodest Proposal: One of the interesting phenomena I've noticed as other aggregating sites are on their ascendancy (can you Digg it?) is that many links that had been MetaFiltered long ago (in Web time) get a new wave of attention, which flows back around here, and BANG! Double-triple-quadruple post!. And how many times lately have we seen comments like "Didn't see it the first time; glad it was reposted"? Maybe what we need is a separate place for "Re-Current" posts or links, where we can acknowledge that WE got it months/years ago, and re-open comments on it. Obviously, such a sub-Meta would require a lot of moderation/maintenance, and maybe it should be an off-site project. How should it work? Can we/you make it work? Why bother? Any volunteers?

you should be deleted, banned, drawn, and quartered

Maybe it's just me, but I think when you sign up just to have AskMe to help you do research for some blog and you are too dumb to hide the fact that you are crossposting, you should be deleted, banned, drawn, and quartered. What do you guys think?

Fleshbot laughs at nerd-sex advice

This AskMe question wasn't good enough for MetaFilter, but it seems to have amused the folks over at Fleshbot (very NSFW). "Because whenever we want advice on sexual intimacy, the Borg-like wisdom of internet geeks is always the first place we turn."

bluegrass/scifi combonerd

Neato. ND¢ posts a nifty link to a guy playing the Star Wars theme on the banjo.

This bluegrass/scifi combonerd turns out to be willc, who, bucking the trend of notables who sign up after catching wind of the metabuzz, is a pre existing member (not a very active member, but one with whom I'd be honored, if somewhat unqualified to pick).

a del.icio.us-like portion of the site?

Why doesn't metafilter add a del.ico.us-like portion of the site which shows interrelated links between sites that have been linked and tagged by users on the various metafilter domains, including users own homepages, projects, etc.

Breaking news on Mefi

So, I think that MeFi was the first to break the bit about racist looting captions. So why then do Wonkette and Flickr users get to pretend they broke the story? There are others, it's now quite the little hot Internet topic. But where's the MeFi love?

Iowa blog copies MeFi comments?

WTF? About halfway down this page, the comments start to get a little, er, familiar... Anyone know what's up? (And yes, I did find that by searching for "ASMED".)

I already saw this stuff on Engadget, Memepool, etc.

Via, via, via -- Engadget, Memepool, and Boing Boing, respectively. These are not minor blogs. Boing Boing got 3 million hits yesterday. I already saw this stuff on the blogs and on delicious; can we stick to fresh stuff on MeFi unless we have something insightful to add?

Can I post a link to a question on Ask to the blue?

Can I post a link to a question on Ask to the blue? It's not my question, so it's not self-linking, but it feels a bit too.... uh, meta.

Advice on re-posting MeFi to blog?

Advice on re-posting MeFi to blog?

I often repost mefi stuff on my blog, often meaning Several times a week, sometimes multiple times a Day. I have an html template I use but I do keep changing the format a little. I'd be glad for some advice on how to do it right, or acceptably. You can check what I mean at http://radio.weblogs.com/0123486/ or for short http://rootcellar.info

I'll try to be checking back here, but there is the email link on the page.

is morphic related to pickover?

is morphic related to pickover? 2/4 comments and 7/10 fpps have included pickover links (there's no email listed or i'd have made enquiries first). i'd dig out more examples, but i'm supposed to be working - it's not clear to me whether someone's being naughty, or just very fond of that site... [oh, and please can we not have the usual lynch mob aggressive doodah if there is something fishy going on?]

Already read the NYT today

Of the 20 posts made to MetaFilter today, the majority are based solely or primarily on 17 links to major newspapers and/or other news sources on the Web. Three Yahoo news links, two Washington Post links, yet another dead-or-abused-child thread. [More inside.]

webloggers should cluster themselves into like-minded groups

SDB suggests that webloggers cluster themselves into like-minded groups, and cross-link accordingly. Disagreements (including here) are what he calls "religious" in nature: "A-list" vs. warblogger, "E/N" vs. "A-list", etc. Does Steve's structuralist argument hold up? Are his characterizations fair or accurate? Do you slot yourself into a group? Are the blogs you link to in a similar vein as yours?

MeFi -> Wired

What's the deal with Wired? And now it looks like they are using MetaFilter as a source for stories. Note the dates in the following examples:
1(MeFi, Wired), 2(MeFi, Wired), and 3(MeFi, Wired). In example 3, they even link
to the same government pdf document. Or maybe they're just following tpoh.org around.

I found this on my blog, which you should read

While arguably all good posts, radio_mookie has posted 6 links in the last three days, while only having 4 comments, and all of the links seem to be cut and paste from his weblog... Does this fall under using the front page as your own blog with Metafilter being your commenting system?

Ah, jeezuz, I'm caught in a loop.

I don't feel like putting this on the MeFi front, it's just way too much navelgazing, even for my celebrity-addled sensitivites.

Checka-checka, Ironminds, the best “webzine” (I mean that in a good way) produced by unpaid contributors, linked to a MetaFilter discussion about a story they posted invoking Kurt Cobain. Their point in linking to MeFi, was to predict a Plastic backlash.

Ah, jeezuz, I'm caught in a loop.

funky bar of weblog links?

I could have sworn that when I first created an account on MeFi there was an option on the Customize MetaFilter page that allowed you to get this funky bar on the front page with links to some weblogs. Whatever happened to it?

Indication of related MeTa threads

In the next design iteration of MetaFilter, it might be nice if on the front page there was some indication that a thread had been added/updated in MetaTalk. I'd wager a guess that at least half the 985 (eep!) members don't even know this section exists.
