A$k the Mod$; Mefi Pet$; Early Acce$$: it's our August Fundraiser!

MetaFilter turned 25 this year and we're excited to be kicking off our annual fundraiser! Over the past year, we've continued to stabilize the site’s finances and started investing in new technology by rebuilding the entire site. Now, to keep the site running smoothly and keep making improvements, we rely on the generous donations of our community. [more inside]

New Wiki Post for USA Voting Support

Using the information from several recent posts about how to support voter turnout in the upcoming U.S. Presidential election, I have created a VotingSupport page in Metafilter Wiki that lists specific organizations that work to educate and support voters. If you are looking for somewhere to volunteer, donate, or get help in voting, I hope you will take a look at this page. [more inside]

I'd like to start a local bookstore bookmark exchange.

Kind of a summer project for myself. Selfishly, I'd love to have cool bookmarks from bookstores from across North America and maybe the world! [more inside]

“I mean, old school web people definitely have opinions...”

From the Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure at UMass Amherst: “MetaFilter turns 25 this month, a shining beacon of the Good Web. Reluctant owner Jessamyn West tells us how rusty tech and vibrant community keeps it vital.” [Elsewhere: MetaFilter: a time capsule from another internet]

We want to hear from Trans and Non-binary members

***FYI this is a thread for Trans and Non-binary members only. If you are a cis ally and want to be supportive, please do so by reading carefully what your peers have to say and allowing them to express themselves without being questioned. There will be additional opportunities for feedback ***

There continues to be powerful organized legal and social efforts directed against Trans and nonbinary people and we need to take actions to ensure that MeFi becomes safer for Trans and Non-binary folks to participate and belong without having to face the same systemic hurdles they already have to face outside of this community . Metafilter Wikipedia Page

I just looked up Metafilter on Wikipedia for some reason related to reading the press-pitch MeTa (I no longer recall the reason) and it looks like it hasn't been updated in a very long time. I'm not a Wikipedia editor beyond occasionally correcting a grammatical error and I know that major edits are something you shouldn't undertake without understanding the culture of wikipedia editors. Also, I don't feel like an authority on the site and its history. In preparation for all the media exposure and curious people we're going to have looking in, maybe we could organize someone to update the wikipedia page? [more inside]

The Continuing Ongoing Modern Pen Pal Project

Since the beginning of 2020, I've been doing a project where I write a handwritten letter a week to friends, acquaintances, and family members on a topic of their choosing and have sent out over 150 letters since starting. I last posted for correspondence about 18 months ago here in MetaTalk, asking for participants -- and you folks delivered! From your participation, I've started some lovely longer-term correspondences, and have sent out one-time thoughts on everything from video games to the history of my area to books to new interests. My list has dwindled and I could use some new participants! [more inside]

Animal Companions (esp. dogs) of Metafilter

It's time. And I think we would all benefit from a post of animal pics, specifically our own animal friends, especially dogs. (I apologize to the cat people who didn't post first so they could say "especially cats". I also like cats.) I suggest we limit the number of photos to.... just kidding. Post them all! [more inside]

MetaMixTapes: Cats

Let's make a mixtape! (I'm never sure how appropriate it is to do something light and fun on MeTa so apologies if there's another corner of the site that I haven't considered that would be better for this.) [more inside]

Amazing list of curmudgeonly websites

There was an askme (I think) not too long ago, about websites that are amazingly specific, usually maintained by a cranky crank. It's where I found the sauce packet database for example... So many amazing links. Maybe even a link to a big website of other links. Somehow I seem to have lost it and I'm sad. Anyone remember and able to point me to the thread?

Share the Hidden-Gem Comments of 2023

Everyone needs a hug, especially those under-appreciated comments we liked so much last year. As seen previously: "Let's show some love for the hidden-gem comments that made you laugh, cry, or cheer [last] year, which you immediately recognized as genius, but somehow slipped under everyone else's radar. As is traditional, please try to stick to comments that received 12 or fewer favorites, and no self-links."

healthcare more like HELLthcare am I right

Hi (US only) friends! It's health insurance decision season for most of us and we live in a grim dystopia where everything is expensive and nothing makes sense. Employer-sponsored benefits are something I know enough to be helpful about (I hope!) and I'm here volunteering my ability to speak the language, if you need it. [more inside]

Heat Wave/Extreme Climate Check-In Thread

Much of the planet right now is dealing with very intense climate related heat waves. Thought it might be helpful to provide a check-in thread and a space for people to discuss the weather/climate, thoughts, concerns, how we're staying cool, what we're doing to try to conserve energy and survive this climate hell. Stay cool, drink water, check in with the vulnerable peoples, friends, family, & be safe.

Metatalktail Hour: Local Mysteries

This week, the worker owned bookstore in my city revealed that there is a mysterious old safe on the newly opened second floor of their new permanent location. (Alternate archive link if the soft paywall blocks you ). Any one who can pick the lock during their business hours can keep half the contents, or all of the contents if they turn out to be "gross or cursed." What do you think is in the safe? What do you wish is in the safe? Or what minor unsolved mysteries reside in your home/town/mind palace? [more inside]
