Will upcoming EU internet legislation affect/break MeFi?

After the plenary vote on the EU copyright reform directive (previously), word is spreading that the new EU rules are likely to impact the web as we know it. Though the directive in its current adopted form won't be law before spring, at the earliest, is there a mod appraisal, a reality check of what potential effects would be if&when it is enacted (in its latest version), here at the Best of the Web™?

MetaLifeHack

It's the end of another week. Politics is awful like usual, and much of the world seems to literally be on fire. So let's talk about something else instead. Tell me about a cool 'life hack'. Maybe you found a way to pack luggage in a way that has made traveling easier. Maybe you found a way to deal with oily skin using some old world natural remedies. Maybe there's a cool browser extension or add-on that lets you do some nifty thing in your day to day Internet consumption. Whatever it is, feel free to share some life hacks with the MetaFilter community. I'm always excited to learn about ways to make my life a bit easier/better.

Calling all Cards!

Having just mailed my cards for Project G.I.V.E. M.E. (that is, Great Internet Valentine Exchange, Metafilter Edition), and having had at least as much fun as I did with the winter holiday cards, I'm wondering if there's enough momentum and interest for another project. [more inside]

Can't find post about infosec/hacking challenges

I could have sworn that a few months ago someone posted an FPP to a webpage made by a couple of guys who designed some interesting "real world" infosec/cryptography/hacking exercises meant to expand awareness of internet security, and now I can't find it anywhere. [more inside]

Is it possible to request a 'Force SSL' option in the User Preferences?

The EFF offers HTTPS Anywhere, but it's not available for all browser, and fails on some script calls. As a feature this would be amazing. Thank you!

Unavailable from comcast?

I have a weird MeFi availability issue. Can't establish a connection to it from home, but I can get to it using work's VPN. I'm not driving in to work today to verify, but I'm willing to assume it works from my desktop at work too. [more inside]

We Need a Hero

@mathowie: "I think RSS is so important that I'd take a job (leaving MeFi) at any startup aiming to make an improved Google Reader (w/ social features). [...] I'm serious, and feel free to email me. MetaFilter can continue with the employees running things."

I think that this maybe merits some serious discussion here, pronto. [more inside]

there's a good chance the VideoSift might not have survived without that spark.

The History of VideoSift Part 1 details the founding of a popular video site by a couple of MetaFilter members, Dag Maggot and Sourbrew. MetaFilter and Our Glorious Leader are heavily credited.

The Joy of FPPing

To people who have done this; why did you create Front Page Post(s) on MetaFilter? The motivations are interesting in themselves, and may also provide positive reasons for people to cross the rubicon from lurker to poster. [more inside]

What online fora molded you?

This might be too chat-filter-y, but I get the impression that a lot of people on mefi put in serious time in other internet fora before settling here. Just kind of curious if there's a lot of common denominators (Compuserve, The Well, etc?), and if they influenced what you expect from a 'good' online community and that's why you ended up here. Please help me find a specific FFP

I'm looking for a particular FPP. It was within the last three months, and it was about how to be skeptical of science/things you read on the internet. It was really good, but I didn't have time to read it all then (and I was drunk), and I just now am regretting that I never finished it. I've tried searching, but things like "skeptical" and "science" return a lot of results. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Why do people engage in Google-bombing?

Why do people feel so thoroughly justified about engaging in Google bombing?

Why is your opinion about something so important as to justify monkeywrenching the best search engine (if not the best thing) on the net? Why is your self-righteous indignation more important that leaving well enough alone?

If it is so important to you, why don't you build something equivalent with the specific aim of "educating the people" and stop piggybacking off of Google?

I am interested in Matt's opinion on this, since he's one of the ones that set this whole thing off.

What should be done to separate rational differences of opinion from hateful propaganda?

According to Friedman of NYT, "thanks to the Internet and satellite TV, the world is being wired together technologically, but not socially, politically or culturally. We are now seeing and hearing one another faster and better, but with no corresponding improvement in our ability to learn from, or understand, one another. So integration, at this stage, is producing more anger than anything else. As the writer George Packer recently noted in The Times Magazine, 'In some ways, global satellite TV and Internet access have actually made the world a less understanding, less tolerant place.'" In some ways, I tend to agree. What can be done? What should be done to separate rational differences of opinion from hateful propaganda?

The internets are disappearing

There appears to be some serious bad juju going on out on the net. Yahoo, for example, has been wiped off the map. It appears to have had its IP address wiped off all the root name servers. I've tried traceroutes from six different places around the globe, and nslookups from a several servers, and they're all like, "Ya-Who?" Plus all lookups for all sites on my local DNS server have become snail-slow. Anyone know more about what's up?
