Try this Chat
check this out, it's a real-time chat app done in XML and DHTML that floats "over" a site. It's kinda buggy and took me a few loads for it to work. Apparently, it's not private just to this site, and the other users are on other sites, but it's interesting.
Restoring the 'filter back in 2001....
now that quesoFilter's up and running, how about putting the header graphics back up on metafilter proper? it's just not the same without them!
New Blurbs in Profiles
I added a simple addition to user profiles, for a blurb about ourselves, and I hope everyone uses it. I threw together a question about usernames and getting started on the internet.
I find usernames (especially unusual ones) often have an odd story behind them, and people's first experiences with the internet are sometimes funny, sometimes interesting.
I spilled my guts, now you go spill yours.

Grabbing Recent Comments
Thanks to SQL whiz Eric, there is now a feature to grab the most recent comments, on 20 threads, sorted by the most recent comments. This will allow things to "bubble up" again when someone comments on an old thread. I think it's a useful, good feature, but could be abused later on, but for now it's better than nothing. It's available for both members and non-members, if you find any bugs, let me know here. It requires javascript to work.
Javascript fix
I changed the posting pages to use a new javascript fix, to prevent double posts. If it doesn't let you post comments or new threads, let me know here. I tested it on IE 5.01, NN 4.75, and NN 6.0 on win2k, and it worked fine.
back and next links to threads
About a billion years too late, I finally thought to add < Back and Next > links to threads, so you don't have to go back to the main page of metafilter to see the next thread.
I tested it in IE 5.01 and NN 6, but didn't in NN 4.7x (my copy seems to be toast since I installed NN 6). If anyone sees any problems, post a screenshot or description of what you're seeing wrong.

Currently online?
There has been 1 link and 16 comments posted since your last visit
17 MetaFilter members currently online
Neat! What exactly does the "currently online" tracker track? (Uhhh, this is new, right? I'm not confused?)
Keystrokes for formatting goodness
I just added helpful keystrokes, ala Blogger, to the text areas in MetaFilter proper (coming soon here). You can now bold, italicize, and build links (my favorite) with a simple keystroke.
Unfortunately, it's IE 4+\Windows only, but if any enterprising javascripters can figure out a way to add html tags to textareas in Netscape, I'll be happy to implement it too.

working on a personalized version of metafilter
Just to let you know, in response to a lot of requests, I'm working on a personalized version of metafilter. No two members will see the same entries because it's going to start catering to your needs. If you like member A's links and comments, they'll get floated up. If you don't care for member B's argumentitive tone, they'll disappear from sight, and their comments will be hidden from view.
Once it's done, it's going to rock.

Comment permalinks!
New Feature: You can now target comments on MetaFilter by using the permalinks. So, say, if you wanted to say "Winer is crazy sometimes!" on your own site or in a metafilter comment, you can now link directly to that.
