Happy week Metafilter! For many Mefites in the US, this is Thanksgiving week so there might be travel, family with all its good and bad aspects, and/or a special meal. And for many Mefites, it's just a week. So, if you're celebrating, here's wishing you a wonderful holiday, and if you're not, just sending you some good mid-week vibes. Also I'm in the market for a new tea towel (or other pleasing kitchen towel), so please share your tea towel ideas or links. [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I want to know what GREAT NEWS you have heard lately, or what great news about your own life has happened, or anything else AMAZING and happy and wonderful you care to share! It can be something as small as, "I cleaned my kitchen!" or as huge as "I saved the whales!" Anything great and happy!
Happy Weekend, MetaFilter! This week, open thread! Is it warming up or cooling off in your part of the world? You got some holidays coming up? Supply chain making your life weird? Let's chat!
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! (FaceFilter????) This week, I'm wondering what is something AMAZING that you are the last person on the planet to discover? This question brought to you courtesy of having JUST DISCOVERED STARDEW VALLEY THIS WEEK, and I clearly should have gotten into this years ago. [more inside]
For today's metatalktails, paduasoy asks, "What places and landscapes (urban, rural, wild, watery or anything at all; perhaps somewhere you haven't visited but think about, or somewhere fictional) are important to you or part of your own mental landscape?" [more inside]
Happy weekend, MeFi, a little late in the weekend! This week, I'd like to know what about mefi makes you say "thank goodness for mefi!" and I will tell my own sordid tale in the first comment.
Fall / Winter is coming ... or maybe Spring / Summer, or the wet season, or the dry season, or school is starting or ending, it's getting warmer or cooler, and some vegetables are growing sparser, while other are ramping up. (When is ramp season, anyway?) So, tell us — what are you doing to prepare for whichever seasonal change is looming on your horizon? Is it fun? Or is it more like chores you have to get through? Are you excited for the change, or not so much? Do you get to switch over to your favorite outfits, or do you have to bid your more beloved attire adieu for now? [more inside]
Hello, fellow travelers, for this weekend's chat, crank up your Melanie, and let's talk wheels. Marie Mon Dieu asks "I would like to know the first time you ever rode a bike, or didn't ride a bike, or why. Or any bike stories that you'd like to share." [more inside]
This Tumblr post inspires this Metatalktails starter: “What’s the weirdest question someone’s ever asked you?” [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I'm curious to know what were your best and worst pandemic purchases? [more inside]
bendy has asked "It's an old thread but could we update "the least plausible story about yourself" as a Metatalktail Hour?" Sounds good to us! Tell us your strange true tales, mefites! [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! Don't miss our August fundraising or this week's Weird Science theme! I really love when we do "show us your X" metatalktails, so this week I want you to show us the view out your window! Or, if you don't love your view (but I love seeing your view! No matter what it is!), show me your favorite local view in your town!
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, wittgenstein wants to know, "What do you pay attention to/notice as you wander through the world that I probably ignore?"
Happy Olympics weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I'd like to know not your favorite thing, but a thing you like or love that you think is wildly underappreciated or overlooked and more people should know about it and enjoy it! Books, food, movies, sports, dog breeds -- anything you think the rest of the world would enjoy if only they knew about it! [more inside]
I'm cat-sitting for some clever naughty cats who last night managed to break into the Forbidden Room and raided the good treats stashed there. This weekend I'd love to hear about your best pet/kid capers and heists. Have you been outsmarted by small creatures, or just looked on with awe at their ingenuity? [more inside]
Phunniemee says, "Inspired by this comment, it would personally amuse me to read through a thread of dumbest / biggest screw up / most embarrassing / lols things that assorted mefite professionals have encountered doing their jobs." [more inside]
This metacocktails, with unclimatically high temperatures forecast for much of western Canada and the US, let's talk about plans to beat/escape/embrace the heat. As always let's avoid politics and this is a conversation starter not limiter.
It is a holiday-filled weekend in the US/UK with Bloomsday, Juneteenth, Father's Day and the Solstice all happening within a few days of each other, and all during Pride Month. So today, on National Hike With a Geek Day, I'd like to know what thing (commemoration, celebration, special event) would you like to make into a holiday? What would happen on that day? Who would it be for or about? Or would there be an existing holiday you'd reconfigure? Or do you have a personal holiday that you celebrate in your own way? [more inside]
As a kind of complement to last weekend's question, I want to know what thing/object/item has been sitting on your desk or a table or a shelf (or moved between various among them) for Objectively Too Long because dangit one of these days you're gonna get around to thing you were gonna do with it or use it for. [more inside]
Frimble thought of this question, and I didn't even know I had a favorite shelf until they asked! Do you have a fun shelf share? Is it because of the physical properties of the shelf, or its location, or what's on the shelf, or a combo? Is it a coincidence that "shelf" rhymes with "self"??? 🤯Yes! Yes, it is! Never mind, tell us a little about yourshelf anyway! [more inside]
You've traded in your magic (overthinking) beans, or you've managed to free a grateful food genie, or your foodie godmother has wielded her magic wand, or you've stumbled upon a hungry dragon's unguarded treasure ... anyway, the tl/dr is that now you have a fabulous enchanted plate that once a day will fill up with whatever dish you summon forth. So what will you be eating from your magical plate today? Oh, but just one more thing... [more inside]
Mutant Lobsters from Riverhead asks: "You have 17 pounds of gold (at minimum worth $50,000 in today's buying power), a time machine, and the infrastructure to fund one arts project at any point in history. What do you fund?" 'Arts' covering any human technology / performance / creation, in this case. [more inside]
Our Metatalktail topic this week come courtesy Kristi, who asks "Time travel has become easy and commonplace. Everyone's already done the big time travel things. What mundane, low-priority time travel trips would you take?" [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I'd love it if you'd share with me a link or two to some of your favorite visual art. Famous, obscure, amateur -- just something you love to look at, and why you love it. [more inside]
It's Springtime in Vermont which means the little peepers are out and about making their frolicking noises; it's always one of the first signs of things improving and beautifying, weatherwise. What are the sounds like near you? Loud sounds, quiet sounds, fun sounds, musical sounds, new sounds or old sounds. Tell us what you've been hearing around you. [more inside]
Happy early weekend, MetaFilter! This week, valkane wants to know: "What movie (or top 5) do you watch over and over? Everyone has favorite movies; but which ones are your comfort food? What 5 movies have you re-watched the most?" [more inside]
From Bklyn wants to know, "How about questions you have asked in ask-me, but never got an answer to? Either because no one knew or you didn't formulate your question right - and maybe later you found out the answer?" [more inside]
What was your required reading in school? Did you have any strong opinions, good or bad experiences? Did you discover a favorite author or were you impressed by some insight in class discussion? Poetry in class: yes, no, or "please don't call on me to read aloud"? Any and all reflection on "reading for school" welcome. Bonus: as a USian, I'm really curious about what MeFites from other countries read that was considered "standard literature" for teenagers. If there's a piece of literature you could ask a roomful of strangers for their opinion on, based on time at school, what would it be? (In the US, it's Animal Farm, or To Kill a Mockingbird.) [more inside]
I was a person who never wore leggings before and now I wear them every day. Has the past year given you a new style, a new accessory (besides your mask), or some little thing/companion/habit/routine that you enjoy and is becoming part of you? Pets, hairstyles, jewelry, houseplants, what's a new thing with you lately? [more inside]
Happy weekend, metafilter! This week, I'd love to see some art or craft projects or home renovations or redecorations or anything like that, anything that you've been making that's beautiful or cool or efficient or well-organized that we can all admire for its talent and beauty! [more inside]
Happy groggy Sunday for those of you experiencing Daylight Savings Time. I was realizing as we hit the one year anniversary of these Pandamnit Times that I miss some weird things. Like there are the BIG things like hugs, theater movies, and indoor time with friends and family, but there are also the small, dumb things like that weird overly cooked french fry at the bottom of the fries, or cleaning the tiny drops of pee that hit the rim of the toilet bowl if I have standing-pee-ers visiting, or the way you have to decide how to pass people in an airplane or music hall aisle. [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I want to know what your latest obsession is! It can be anything, but links are def appreciated so we can all go get obsessed with it. [more inside]
Prompted by a fun poster thread on MLTSHP, I want to know about a thing that is on your wall. Could be a poster, a painting, a picture, a wall-hanging, a shadow, a window, a post-it, something you like to look at that you think others might like to see. Feel free to describe it or link us to a picture of it.
I've been reading Sarah Vowell's Take the Cannoli and enjoyed reading about her visit to Disneyland, particularly how she would remake Disneyland if she could build a theme park. And that made me think about my own personal theme park and what I might like to see and what other kinds of theme parks others would create. Sky's the limit, what would you like to create a theme park for? Would there be rides? Food? Attractions? Educational opportunities? Take us on a trip somewhere.
What are your minor annoyances? We know what all the MAJOR annoyances are lately but what’s the teeny thing that nonetheless is on your last nerve after all this time at home, or navigating workandschoolandpeopleandstuff? [more inside]
Scientists have discovered a way to peer into the past1 and record historical events without interacting with them.2 They then turn the recordings into interactive virtual realities. When do you go? What burning question are you finally going to be able to answer? As always a conversation initiator not limiter. [more inside]
Happy Weekend, MetaFilter! (Indeed, the happiest weekend in quite a while for many US mefites!) I'm in too good a mood to think of a topic but I'm bored of my winter dishes, so tell me what you're cooking lately! [more inside]
More than usual, people are interacting via the post office, various delivery services, and sometimes becoming their own delivery services. I'd like to talk about the mail (since postal trivia is one of my nerdy interests). Tell me a story about the mail, or delivery of some kind, past, present, or future. [more inside]
Hello Mefites, happy 2021! It's a new year and we're all wishing for better days in the new. I've got my coffee underway this morning and it looks like the sun is going to make an appearance. Are you making resolutions, wishes, hopes, mottoes for this year? Are you doing anything good today or this weekend?
As the bouncers begin to haul 2020 to the door, please tell me one good thing that happened for you during this shitshow of a year.
Hello weekend Mefites! This week soundguy99 wants to hear about your Stupid Human Tricks. "In light of this Ask, which is apparently inspiring some of us to contortion ourselves in our abodes to see what is & is not possible, here's a possible idea for a MetaTalkTail - Stupid Human Tricks. Unusual things you can do (physical, mental, whatever) or "common" things you can't do? Can you do the chair challenge? Curl your tongue? Move your eyes independently? Multiply 5-digit numbers in your head? Read backwards? Or NOT?" [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! As a subscription box addict, this week I'm wondering a) what would be your absolutely ideal subscription box? and/or b) if you were to curate a subscription box of your life, what would I be subscribing to? Interpret broadly. :) [more inside]
It's the weekend, Mefites! This weekend I'm wondering what's in your "I've been meaning to read..." pile -- or on your I've been meaning to watch, meaning to listen, meaning to cook (etc) list? [more inside]
If I were to have my dream job, it would probably be a combination of writing Wikipedia articles about notable and under-appreciated people (librarians, artists, historical POC) and being the "Live Zoom link provider" person when I was watching a lecture or attending an event. "Oh hey that person mentioned their book, here's a link where you can read a review or purchase it from a non-Amazon shop." It would be great if that kind of thing paid. What sort of dream job would you like, if you're dreaming? Sky is the limit. Thank you to valkane for the suggestion. [more inside]
It's the weekend, Mefites! It's cold where I am, and I could really go for a hot homemade cinnamon roll. Not that I'm going to make one or anything... Do you have a food daydream? [more inside]
This week's prompt comes from MonkeyToes: Huron Bob's stories were so often humane and comforting. In his memory, let's have a story MetaTalk? One where we tell a story about something encouraging that's stuck with us over the years, or about someone telling us just the right and comforting thing at a difficult moment, or something to give courage and comfort? This is not meant as a minimizing everyone-must-be-happy way... but it might be a good time to share stories that sustain us. [more inside]
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! This week's Metatalktails brought to you by Janelle Monáe. 🥂

Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I have a SUPER-SELFISH metatalktail hour, which is that I want to know what's on your wishlist, because my mother demands we provide her with extensive ones for the holidays and mine is crappy. What is on your realistic wishlist? What books? Movies? Random small appliances? What is on your wild imaginary wishlist, specific private islands? Modernist mansions? TELL ME. What would be the perfect gift for YOU? [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, as per jessamyn's request, the topic is, "Honestly, Eyebrows, you sit in the house all day and you've been tripping over five baskets of clean laundry waiting to be sorted for the last three weeks: What is your deal?" [more inside]
