Is it me or are some people abusing the anonymous question loophole? [more inside]

Why is it that you can post to AskMe as Anon and then make a normal post, but you can't do it the other way around? Once you've made a post the Anon link vanishes from the post page.
Is it just the link vanishing, or does the ability go too?
Can it be changed? [more inside]

What is the likelihood this would happen? Two unsensational, unrelated posts (1,2) on AskMe within six minutes of each other by america4 then america5. Weird.

What are the limits to absolute hilarity when "in bad taste" comes into play before posting something to the blue? I ask because I'm itching to share this video with everyone. It's wholly repugnant, but ridiculously high on the Unintentional Comedy Scale. [more inside]

"More Inside" is great and all, but perhaps it's time for absolute length limits in AskMe? Brain-dump essays like those (2600 and 1500 words!) don't help people answer, and all those posts need is some judicious editing before posting.

I recently posted an anonymous question to Metafilter (within the past week). I browsed to the 'New Question' page without thinking about the question limits because I had a new query, but to my surprise the page didn't restrict me from posting. A bug? A way to get around the question limit? Am I shortly going to be shot for pointing this out?

The New Question page on AskMefi is giving me conflicting information. First it says that I have 7 days 15 hours (etc) to post, then one countdown says I have 15 hours left, then there's another countdown which was constantly changing between the two, but as I type this it's settled itself to 15 hours. (One of the countdowns is from a GreaseMonkey script). Which is it?

I have an idea that popped into my head while I was reading this.
Sometimes it comes up that people need/want to ask more than one question that warrants the use of AskMefi within the 2 week period. How about something in your profile where you could post semi-smallish questions + tags? These wouldn't be posted to the main page, but if someone had a similar question that they want to ask, these other smallish questions could come up in a tag search. Then, when the second searcher asks their question, maybe have something that pops up in the first person's profile next to their smallish question to alert them that a somewhat related question has been asked.
Note: I have no idea if this is one of those things that seems absolutely stupid or if it is too difficult to code or whatever. (I hope that "feature requests" was a good place to put this, even though it is probably nonexistant on anyone else's radar screen.)

Feature request: Setup AskMeFi to have a one question per two weeks limit. Then, create a separate page that allows people who have already asked their question to have their extra question displayed and voted on. (more inside)

What's the character limit on tags? I tried to add the tag 'BuffalobuffaloBuffalobuffalobuffalobuffaloBuffalobuffalo' to this thread and got
Error Executing Database Query. [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]String or binary data would be truncated. Saw nothing about it in the FAQ.

D'oh! I've been negged by AskMefi for posting another question (last one on July 12th) with the response that "I'm new here and limited to one question a week." I've been with mefi since 2001, what happened?

I posted a question in AskMe yesterday. How long before I can post again - i.e., does it take 7 calendar days or reset on a given day, for example? My wife & I are traveling to Asheville next Tuesday for 3 days and I'd love to ask for suggestions on places to go/things to do (other than Biltmore).

Hi, I'm working on a pro bono asylum case and I need a NYC-area translator for Fulani/Pular, a dialect of Guinea. We've tried the available services without much luck and I thought as a last ditch attempt, to try askmefi. However, I asked a question last week (before this translator thing had really become an issue). Would it be possible to post a second question? I can promise not to ask a question next week.

Having just made an FPP, I can still get to the posting page by pasting the "post_good.mefi" link. I can also put in any user id and it still gets me into preview. I didn't dare to hit post though to see if that works, but I thought I'd point it out.

In an effort to reach a compromise between people who like newsfilter posts and people who simply can't abide by them, do you think we can attempt to economize the length of FPPs such as this one?

If I have found a website that I think is interesting and I'd like to share it with MeFi... but it is a geocities page that will be useless after the bandwidth limit is hit, what is the protocol? Simply not post it? Post it and let the bandwidth chips fall where they may? Advice on proper etiquette appreciated!

Does anyone else think that Ask Metafilter would be improved if people could only ask one question per week? There are no 'bad' questions, and I love the site, but maybe it would be better if people saved up their questions for really good stuff, rather then just asking a question of the moment. The down side is that some off the cuff questions are the best, they mirror the way the mind thinks while on the web...

Bug: If you set your prefs to show 99 days of posts, the front page shows 99 days of posts, thereby taking forever and making the server pretty unhappy, I bet. There should be some max built in there.
Suggestion: Set login cookie domains to ".metafilter.com" (note the two periods), so logins will work at metafilter.com, www.metafilter.com, and metatalk.metafilter.com.

I've largely refrained from joining the chorus asking for some sort of throttle (one post per week, 2/3 posts per week, waiting period for newcomers, etc.), but Jiminy Christmas: Eight front page posts in half an hour? (number one, number eight.) Are you going to implement any of these post-flow-control ideas, Matt, or are we going to become "MetaFilter: A Firehose For The Thirsty"

Emboldened as I am by positive reinforcement (thank you Stavros, and Sennoma), and joyous as I may be at the successful migration to the new server ( Happy Birthday, MetaFilter!), I am still saddened by the many "things are not so good at MetaFilter" discussions that seem to have been occurring recently, both here and off-premises. Although you may all count me in the "I love this place, and all who frequent her shores" category, after carefully reviewing the complaints and giving the matter due consideration, I do have two (and only two) suggestions ... Vertical space at a premium, yet long FPPs still happen. How about a count on the characters in the textarea (server side probably better) and a warning like "Are you really sure all this text needs to be on the front page? Have you considered the [more inside] technique?"

I don't know who this "mathowie" character is, but he appears to have found a way to get past the one-post-every-24-hours limitation, posting two front-page threads within an hour of each other- probably with some super-sophisticated hack or something. Someone better close this loophole before other people start exploiting it!

Since we're on something of a war footing here, can I suggest some kind of rationing to, say, one front-page post a day? I know that MiguelCardoso simply mucked up the URL on his last topic, but it just makes it harder to follow the active discussions...

Has this subject of limited self-blogs ever been brought up? Wait - before everyone starts throwing things at me. What if there were one day a month where self-blogging (to a limited extent) was allowed - say one per customer.
I appreciate the fact that MeFi isn't supposed to be a self-promotional place, but what if this one day - "Shameless Self-Blog Sunday" or whatever, it was cool to link to a project or site that the user had been involved in - with a significant notice (icon or text) that the blog was self-referential so readers would be forewarned.
I just know that lots of folks do have things they're proud of (myself included of course), that they want to share with MeFi, and it would be nice to have a way to do so without being horribly crass. As they say - "Well, it's an idea."
