Updating crisis resource links, aka help for "There Is Help"

The Wiki's There Is Help page is a great service. It offers links for emergencies, mental health, grief, homelessness, general survival. But it was last updated in the summer of 2020. [more inside]

"Things People Do Differently" -- I can't find it!

Somewhere on Metafilter, there was a massive compilation of all the "I do X and my friend does Y, which one of us is correct?" posts, like about which way toilet paper rolls go, and sock-sock-shoe-shoe or sock-shoe-sock-shoe, or wiping while standing vs sitting. My search skills are failing me. Where on earth was this?

Updates to Election Thread Guide on the Wiki

Taking advantage of what actually appears to be a slow news day (?!), I re-vamped the Election Thread Guide on the MeFi wiki to be a new "U.S. Politics Thread Reference" guide. I've enjoyed (as much as one can enjoy) the politics megathreads, but there certainly is a learning curve. Please feel free to add your own content directly or, if you'd like, add info/suggestions here and I can work it in. [more inside]

New Resource for Collaborative FPPs on Same Sex Marriage Legalization

There has been some concern that some of the recent FFPs about state-level same sex marriage legalization have been relatively thin. For the states where legal SSM is still pending, prewriting draft text and collecting links to background information would help us create more substantial FPPs that could still be posted in a timely manner as soon a ruling is issued or a law is passed. To this end, all interested MeFites are invited to use these MetaFilter wiki pages to collaborate on future FPPs for each state.

How can we make ThereIsHelp even better?

The ThereIsHelp page on the MeFi wiki is a helpful compilation of resources for people who are struggling with depression, suicidal ideation, alcoholism, domestic violence, and sexual assault. It's also a living document, originally created through the collaboration of MeFites over three years ago in memory of Bill Zeller, and I'd like to continue the conversation about how we as a community can make it even better. The new Mefi Wiki site

The unofficial Metafilter Wiki, long hosted by Adrian Hon, has a new website and host - it's now at mefiwiki.com, and I'm taking over hosting. This switch gives it a sizable software and hardware upgrade. It should be easier to update, and more spam-resistant. [more inside]

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

There are a TON of Ask Me questions about basic home networking problems -- setting up wireless, why is my cable modem not working, how do I set up a wireless bridge, etc. Is anyone interested in working on a wiki page with common troubleshooting stuff related to that? Is that something that even should go on the metafilter wiki?

Queries from the hive mind

I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z. [more inside]

Why Is There So Much Spam In Our Wiki?

I know this has been brought up before, but I believe that it's frustrating enough to deserve being brought up again. Why is the wiki so spam-ridden?

Every time I go to look at it, at least 75% of the things I click on are spam or "DeletedPage: This page was WikiSpam. "

Seriously, If nobody's going to put in the effort to keep the wiki spam-free, why even bother to have it, especially now that we have a FAQ?

Vandalbots on the wiki

The MetaFilter Wiki is being destroyed by vandalbots.

As recently as yesterday I used it to look something up, but its brain has been mostly melted. Can it be rolled back to an earlier snapshot? And can you make it so that only registered MeFi users can edit it?

Mefi + Wiki + CSS = Good Stylin'

I might have been the last person to figure this out, for all I know, but if you pop the URL for the new MeFi stylesheet into the Stylesheet URL box on the Wiki's Edit Preferences page, it looks pretty damn good! Just thought I'd share, in case there's anyone out there slower on the uptake than me.

Is the website http://mssv.net/wiki.cgi?Home just a blog or is there some connection between it and metafilter? I was just getting more background info and this one seemed a tad OTT. Please don't tell me there's people praying towards SF.
