MetaTalktail Hour: Oh, Just a Perfect Day
For this Euro-shifted MetaTalktail Hour, paduasoy asks "Hi all! I was asked at a job interview to describe my perfect day. Wondering what other people's perfect days would be. (I didn't get the job!)"

Would MetaFilter be a better place without relentless negativity?
I'm increasingly concerned about the effects of insistently negative comments on MetaFilter. [more inside]

Open thread, and words we like
For some Mefites it's Thanksgiving today, which can mean travel and family etc (or not). For everyone else it's just midweek. So here's an open chit-chat thread where we can celebrate what we're thankful for, or take refuge and gripe about traffic and family, or alternatively, celebrate its not being a holiday and gripe about regular midweek nonholiday stuff. I really like the word "blustery", do you have a word you like?

Turkey Day 2019
Word is that Joel Hodgson is doing another Turkey Day stream of classic MST3K episodes on Thanksgiving this year, starting at noon Eastern time, both through YouTube and their new 24 hour Twitch stream! The stream already shows MST3K all the time, but watching it for Thanksgiving is like a tradition, a tradition that we in MST Club believe strongly, so we watch the whole marathon in our video room each year, as kind of a preliminary for the big Christmas Marathon. Come join us!

MetaTalktail Hour: Mefite Juvenilia
This weekend's topic is from J.K. Seazer: What art or other self-expression did you do as a kid? Angsty poetry? Steamy slash fiction? Garage bands? Cartoons? Minecraft servers? Tell us all about it!

Parenting Kids with Mental Health Issues....filter
Over the years there have been a number of AskMe posts about parenting kids with mental health issues, and some of them were written by other people! Which leads me to believe that there are other parents on Metafilter wrestling with the practical, social, and other challenges of raising kids with mental health challenges or diagnoses. I'm certainly not finding the community I want around this elsewhere, so I'm looking to Metafilter. I wonder whether there's an interest for a group of parents who have these struggles, to put heads together, problem-solve and hold space for one another. [more inside]
Best of Best of MetaFilter
I want to thank taz for continuing to maintain the Best Of Metafilter posts and sidebars, and specifically call out the November music round-up. It's splendid, thank you!
Double-post etiquette?
I'm kind of confused as to why this post is still up. It's been flagged as a double since about half an hour after it first went up - yesterday's post is a link to the official TED Talk YouTube channel version of a talk that was posted to the blue, linked to the ted.com version, when it was first published in 2012. Is there a "we haven't seen this in a while, so it's OK" rule about double posts that I missed somewhere?

š§ MetaGarlic
We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about garlic.
āGarlic is divine. Few food items can taste so many distinct ways, handled correctly. Misuse of garlic is a crime...Please, treat your garlic with respect...Avoid at all costs that vile spew you see rotting in oil in screwtop jars. Too lazy to peel fresh? You don't deserve to eat garlic.ā ā Anthony Bourdain, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary UnderbellyLove it? Hate it? Any garlic-related stories or adventures? Do you grow it at home yourself? Do you have any special recipes that are garlic-specific? Feel free to share them here with us. Is there a particular varietal that you seek out? Did you know that Les Blank made a documentary all about garlic - 'Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers (1980)'. Here is the trailer. Let's talk about all things related to garlic. Remember to be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.

Post tags and deadnames
I posted Daniel Mallory Ortbergās latest instalment of his ongoing serial fic. When tagging the post, I was conflicted about tagging it with his deadname (which is āMallory Ortbergā. Two questions:
1) on a technical level, will tagging with his full name link up with older posts tagged with his deadname, since the latter is included in the former? Heās the same author, and that continuity of work seems valuable.
2) on a trans-etiquette level, is this shitty and equivalent to deadnaming? (Iām more interested in hearing what trans folks have to say on this one.)
I ended up tagging the post with his name and his deadname but Iām questioning that.

Ten Years on Metafilter!
Posting for ellieBOA: Ten years ago today, I finally joined MeFi after reading it for a while before, after seeing AskMe linked on Lifehacker. This site is one of my favourite places on the internet, and the online and offline friends I've made here are awesome. Thank you all for everything you put into this site, my life would be so different without it. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Back to basics
Good weekend, Mefites! For Metatalktails this week I'm wondering, have you gone back to basics in something lately? That is, something you'd been doing in the newfangled high tech way, but stopped, and went back to the old way of doing it? [more inside]
Fanfare critical standards
The discussion of Joker on Fanfare includes a lot of comments that are flat-out negative. How much of that is allowed on fanfare? Has policy shifted to allow more of it? [more inside]
FanFare New Post in My Fanfare
Would anyone else find it useful to have the media from posts you create in FanFare automatically added to My FanFare? For example, I recently posted episodes of The Morning Show to FanFare, and then had to add the show to My FanFare.
Who here went to CTY?
This year is the 40th anniversary of CTY! The Center for Talented Youth, also known as "nerd camp," was a summer camp where high school students got to take college level courses. MetaFilter seems like the sort of place that probably has a higher-than-average percentage of alumns. Did you go?

Secret Quonsar 2019 THANK YOU!
Thrilled and honored to be the first to post a THANK YOU to -- I don't know who specifically, but the kind and generous soul who honored my request to be sent "anything made of dark chocolate that comes from their corner of the universe." I am now the very, very happy recipient of 6 glorious bars of superior dark chocolate from Toronto. I shall savor every bite. [more inside]

šļø MetaDesertIslandPicks šŗ
We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about your desert island picks. Choose one film, one book, one television series, one album, and one video-game/console to take with you while stranded on a desert island*. What are your choices? Assume the media you choose will never degrade and that you have a high definition television and a consistent source of power. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. ā ā *No trilogies.

Hugging-Hugs thread - Holiday Preamble and Life Just Sucking Sometimes
So, I've been having A Time Of It at work, and could use moral support. I'm probably not alone. Also, there are those of us who have trouble with the holidays each year. Fortunately MeFi has come through for its own in the past; let's start another hugging hugs thread and speak up in here if we need pep talks (about work or otherwise), or give encouragement if we can.

Metatalktail Hour: A Plan Comes Together
This week for Metatalktails, I want to hear about some little triumphs. Like when you finally got to use that thing you'd set up for just this occasion. What are your stories of a time when preparation really paid off, or a plan came together in a satisfying way? [more inside]

How do you know what is worth a question on AskMetaFilter?
So Iāve posted a few things lately only to discover that the bulk of the answers do not meet my needs and I start to wonder if it was worth using up one of my limited questions on that topic, or whether I should just be expressing myself differently for better results. To me AskMetaFilter is a good way of thinking through a difficult issue or helping me to feel better when Iām feeling bad. [more inside]

MetaWhatYouLikedAboutToday
It's the middle of the week, let's break up the doldrums. Tell me what you liked about today. Something you did, something someone else did for you, a photo, a cloud, a puppy you pet, whatever it is, just something you liked about today. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

Small pony: ongoing word count on Mefi posts
Since the site suggests you move content from the question to extended explanation once it hits 100 words, would it be possible to add a widget that shows you how many words are in your question currently (like Twitter does for character count)? That would have the added benefit of being able to warn a user when they are reaching their word limit within the 'post' page rather than requiring a click through to the 'preview post' section.
We should stop linking to the NY Times
The history of the NY Times paywall has been one of cat and mouse games, but at present the site is so aggressively paywalled as to be functionally unreachable for many. Continuing to link to it as a primary source in a post seems contrary to community standards. [more inside]

157: That's The Title, Everyone Get Back To Work And Thank You
It's our Halloween episode, which is not particularly spooOOOOooOOoooky because I accidentally left it out on the counter overnight after we recorded it yesterday. But jessamyn and I catch up on the last month of MeFi stuff and you can't prove that there wasn't also a ghost on the call. Runs about 90 minutes. [more inside]
Jessamyn quote #57?
What's Jessamyn's phrasing for always giving people the benefit of the doubt and reading their words.... generously....? Argh, I can't think of the phrase she used to always use.
