Ask Metafilter: would be great if members posting questions could receive email alerts on new answers to their questions.

If you suspect another user has been PWI (Posting While Intoxicated) why not send him an email instead of ridiculing it in the thread? See related alarmist post here

Last week I posted a music question to AskMe. To be honest, I really, really wanted one particular user to answer (he/she did) because I know from their previous answers that they know a lot about recording/playing music. What I want to know, though, is whether it would have been considered bad etiquette to email this person directly, after hunting down their address via the home URL on their profile. Basically - an unsolicited email. If you received such an email from a fellow Mefite would you consider it spamming and/or somehow taking advantage of the "community"?

[My Little Pony] There seems to be a little concern now that registrations are open again, that for the bargain price of five dollars a spammer could get access to a large number of e-mail addresses. Could I suggest that e-mail addresses are hidden and a posting form put in it's place so we can remain easily contactable?

It's really frustrating that so many Mefi people don't have e-mail addresses posted on their member page. In fact, it's really inexcusable given the ability to obtain free secondary and terciary e-mail addresses.

While no one can be forced to read their e-mail (or have the Mefi address mails forwarded to a primary one, I think Matt should require an e-mail address to be posted.

I posted a link. Shortly thereafter, I get creepy spam-mail asking me to post links to Joe Blow's slightly-related site. I ignore. Not long, though, until link appears in comments. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

What's the etiquette for VIA if you're emailed a link by a blogger, but that link's not actually on their blog? Should one just not provide a VIA or should you link to the blog anyway to give credit where it's due?

Proposed : That if you're going to incessantly troll threads and insult people's intelligence, all in an infuriatingly supercilious and unctuous tone that seems intended to inflame, you should at least have the courtesy to provide an email address on your profile, disposable or otherwise.

this isn't a request for matt, really (i know there are lots of those) - i think anyone could do this with a little screen-scraping and not too much server load. how about a daily (or 6/12 hourly? or step-wise, every 1, 4, 16, 64 replies...) email service to tell you if there have been any replies to threads you've posted on. this would be for those of us who only post a couple of comments or less a day - helps keep you in the discussion without having to run through threads checking for possible responses.

How about requiring everyone who posts to have a valid e-mail accessable to other members, but only through a form mail, to hide the address for those who don't want it really public, and to protect addresses from farmers?

In response to email-harvesters, how about implementing this as an invisiible link on each metafilter page. It generates an unlimited stream of bogus email addresses, thereby poluting the email list. Spam the spammers!

I think it's fantastic that our email addresses are now shielded from non-members, but that still means that 13,000 people are free to send anonymous flames to any member--or to sign them up for spam. How about this: Instead of the profile page displaying the email address, it shows an email form. One would have to be logged in to use it, the sender's username would show up in the email, and the recipient's address would remain hidden.

Some Email addresses on user profiles - mine and Insomnyuk's, for instance - are no longer scrambled with an "AT" instead of a "@". There seems to be some strange highlighting going on as well. Is everything OK?

I wish there was a web form that would allow a member to send an email to another member that is not showing their address. Require the sender to be logged in, and maybe even hold it until the sender responds to a confirmation email sent to their own registered address. The sender need never know the recipient's address (and vice versa). It would facilitate communication in general, and may even keep some matters off MetaTalk.

Enough with the porn bombs already! Isn't there anything we victims can do about this cowardly spamming tactic undertaken by so-called fellow users? I'm thinking of changing and then removing my e-mail address altogether, as it's not worth the trouble.

I made a slight change to the user pages. Logged in users see everything as it was before, but non-logged in users don't see any contact information except for websites URLs. I had long worried about the spam thwarting measures I have employed not being good enough, and I've also been hearing about non-members hassling members for memberships, posting, etc. So with the new change, non-members won't be able to harvest addresses, or send you an email (unless you've got it listed on your homepage URL somewhere), and they won't know your AIM/ICQ or location.

What to do when there is no e-mail?

I've been following the thread regarding the film Waking Life, and found peebo's comments to be quite interesting as (her or his) take on the film was quite different from mine, I was hoping to strike up a conversation via e-mail. Alas, this new poster to MeFi has not supplied an address.

In the interests of discourse (and etiquette management) should this information be required of members?

Also, what's the proper way to get a hold of someone lacking an address? I'm reluctant to post a "hey please e-mail me" message in the thread itself, but I can't think of another means of contact.

Can someone tell me if it is standard procedure to receive personal attacks from Metafilter users in my e-mail box because I posted a comment that they didn't like? Couldn't find the earlier mention of this, so I'll pick up on it here.

A new user user (RightWinger) just posted a fairly feeble defense of Dubya and was almost immediately called a troll for his pains. I think this is basically because he didn't have an email address. Rogers has mentioned lately, rightly I think, how many potential conflicts can be defused that way, and now I think people are starting to see the lack of email as prima facie evidence of bad faith, and responding accordingly. His post wasn't really that inflammatory, but I think the level of trust is really low for people who can't be contacted offline. Total anonymity and community membership just may not mesh very well.

Matt has floated the idea of making everyone email-authenticable (word?). I think it's a good idea: people will trust more when they see a "real" identity, more offline diplomacy can happen, and I think people will be more responsible if they have a little bit of accountability built in. If it's *that* important to them to be anonymous, why are they posting to MetaFilter?

minor bug: The @ in an email address shows as a url encoded %40 in a user's profile page. The link works okay, it just looks weird.

Why do so many people's email addresses display with weird charaters in them? Seems to be that way for everyone. The HREFs are okay, though.
