Metafilter ranks third when using 'weblog' as a search term in Google
Metafilter ranks third when using 'weblog' as a search term in Google at the moment. Worth celebrating?
Search is broken again.
Search is broken, part 532. But this time it's a Google bug. Here's an example: I couldn't find a recent excellent AskMe, until iconomy kindly answered my MetaAsk, noting it was called MySonHatesMeFilter. But using Google, even with that unique string, I don't find the original article, but Yahoo and MSN find it. I'm afraid Google is no longer necessarily "your best bet". How about adding Yahoo and MSN search boxes?
Google Images of MetaFilter
A question (about a sore nose) should have been answered by your mother/google.
I've just read the worst ask.me of all time and the risk of devaluing the site is irritating me to hell. I seem to remember a suggestion that maybe I should make use of google - does that sound like a reasonable soultion?

Does googling ask.metafilter.com get the archives?
Does googling ask.metafilter.com get the archives? I was gearing up to chime in about visiting Moab for i_cola, when I had a moment of deja vu. The domain restricted search turned up only two non-results... but searching on my MetaTalk comment history broght me what I was looking for.
Does Google track where I'm from with cookies?
This is only tangentially related, but I'm curious - I used Google's new local search features, and this morning the Google ads on the home page had a couple local interest items in them for Los Angelenos like myself. I imagine my location has been cookied and now my visits to every site that runs Google text ads is logged as a visit by that guy from 90024... can anyone verify that? Also, curious if this means ads for product categories I've googled will soon start following me from blog to blog based on individual user recognition.
Punishment for "Just google it?" replies?
If quonsar can be banned for a week , what happens to the people who continually post about google to askme ?
big big google ad
These Google Ads are getting bigger and bigger, at least in some threads. They look like big vertical banners with BIG HEADLINES. WTF? Is this the face of all Google ads to come?
Parallel-universe network site invite
When MetaFilter's down, parallel-universe websites like Orkut contain valuable information as well as friendly confraternization - witness the MetaFilter board on the same website. Plus you get photos and intimate details of your favourite MeFi posters, whether friends or foes. How important are these parallel-universe network sites? Is Google's patronage indicative of things to come? And, yes, should we take over while it's hot? Does anyone want to be invited?
Google query in lieu of an answer
In a recent AskMeFi thread a link to a Google query was provided in lieu of an answer [more inside].
Mefi not showing up as top search result on google
Could we fix this? [More inside]
Googlewashing recursively
MetaFilter: Such a powerful force, it has "Googlewashed" the term "Googlewash".
Now, let's try a really challenging meme: OW! (which actually started here to give credit where it's... OW!

Is Google indexing broken?
When I wanted to do a search to find out if someone had linked to a given site in a FPP yet, I decided to try something different. I went to old google and put in this URL, which was the link in the most popular FPPof the day exactly two weeks ago, as a "who link's to you?" search.
Shouldn't google have indexed the thread, then, since it links back to the original article? Strange, that it doesn't do this for a link and lenghty thread on a topic that will have serious implications for everyone on the internet, specifically Americans? Has google dropped the ball? Is this all just a bunch of Tom-Foolery?

Add google to MeTa search page
Certainly not a pressing need but I'd appreciate it if you could add the google search to the MeTa search page just like we have it on the MeFi search page.
Fewer updates on google services pls
If I'm making something out of nothing, please let me know.
However, I was wondering if we could possibly put a stop to FPPs that report on every new feature at the Google website? Considering the hand-in-hand nature of MeFi users and Google, it seems to be a given that we will all discover these new features by ourselves...
Yes, I know, we can discuss the usefulness of these new features. However, since when was MeFi a web-tech / design forum? Google is cool, but I use the site dozens of times every day — as I'm sure most MeFI users do. I don't really think we need burning missives telling us that a new tab has been added. It's not like Google is crowded; we're not going to miss seeing it ourselves.
Like I said, if I'm completely off base, I'm more-than willing to concede.

Why do people engage in Google-bombing?
Why do people feel so thoroughly justified about engaging in Google bombing?
Why is your opinion about something so important as to justify monkeywrenching the best search engine (if not the best thing) on the net? Why is your self-righteous indignation more important that leaving well enough alone?
If it is so important to you, why don't you build something equivalent with the specific aim of "educating the people" and stop piggybacking off of Google?
I am interested in Matt's opinion on this, since he's one of the ones that set this whole thing off.

Is Google bomb-proof now?
Is Google bomb-proof now? After seeing "verisign" posts all over the weblog world, I decided to check the progress on Google. The article calling for the bomb is #79 in a search for Verisign as of right now, and the link itself within the post doesn't show up in the first 100 results for me. Perhaps Google has gotten wise to everyone's shenanigans?
Google Search
'Your original search: beer bottle betadene was misspelled and returned 0 results. The corrected search: beer bottle betadine was done instead and the results appear below.' Has Google always done this (ie, this just happens to be my first misspelled search to score zero hits), or is it something new?
Why is my site not turning up in google?
speaking of google, i did a quick search of the name of my journal/blog/analfoam-site/whatever, called 'pigeonfarm', and metafilter came up a whole lot more than my site itself. anyone else got this going on?
google news is a weblog? news to me
Is Google News Search a weblog? Internet.com seems to think so: 'Googleblog': Search Firm Gets into Weblogging...
will googlebombing ruin google?
Slate wonders if Googlebombing will ruin the poor little seach engine that could. Cap'n Haughey gets a meniton for the Critical IP imbroglio. There's some weird editing botch at the end that I imagine will get ironed out later.
Is this a violation of privacy?
How do we feel about the real or imagined privacy violations involved in signing up for the google PageRank toolbar system? I find an old discussion here but the privacy issue really isn't discussed in detail. I seek the opinions of the learned.
Blogs and pagerank
The Google Time Bomb- how weblogs are increasingly influencing the algorithms of Google's search engine. It looks like fun could be had with this. (From Microcontent news)
Google Appliance
The Google Appliance is an interesting move on the part of Google. Don't know how much it costs but it would be nice if they were to offer it for smaller sites.

Pagerank makes bad people findable
If you search for Bernard Shifman on Google, the number one result is the “Bernard Shifman is a moron spammer” page that was all over the web yesterday. His “official” web page (in an online directory) is now seventh or eighth on the list. Joseph Crosby (GM of the Houston Doubletree) has a similar problem.

Has anybody kept track of Metafilter's Google PageRank?
Has anybody kept track of Metafilter's Google PageRank? (the little green bar on the Google IE toolbar...dunno how else to view it) Creeping upward, I suspect, but I'm curious. As you all know, as it increases Metafilter threads become better candidates to be included in search results. I'm seeing more and more of them.
Better than Google Images?
Help: can anybody point me to the thread where they discussed various image-search engines better than google's? I think the original post was about one that used some sort of fuzzy logic system instead of just keywords.
Money for Blogging and Your Chicks for Free
Blogging for cash? Anyone think that there's any sort of business model that could be applied towards weblogging? I've been thinking about something along the lines of text advertising, a-la Google's AdWords.
MeFi Pagerank rocks Scooby Doo Porn
This is incredible. While going through yesterday's stats (it was a slow sunday), I found a couple referrers from google, for "scooby doo porn" searches. So I tried it myself, and MetaFilter comes up third, for a comment made as a joke, making fun of search engines.
