My FPP was deleted today. Which, relevant to an ongoing thread (that I had not seen prior to posting) brings up interesting (or not?) questions about prohibited speech and its implications/consequences. . .
Metafilter is not for pyramid scheme
It should be pretty obvious that stuff like this should not fly in the blue. Using this site as a quarry for pyramid schemes is inappropriate and action should be taken accordingly.

And lo, when the spammers did rear their ugly heads, the valiant Sir RichardP did smite them. Mighty was his sword, and thus was the Kingdom of Wiki spared the ugly wrath of pr0n.

Too Many iPod Ads-as-Posts
I don't care about your damn iPod products. We've had like a billion iPod-related avertisments as posts on this site in like the last few months? Can we stop advertising for the iPod? How about it?
Open registrations = open for spammers?
Noverber 18, 2004: Metafilter registrations become open for a nominal fee of $5.
November 18, 2004: The spam I receive at my previously clean inbox increases exponentially.
Coincidence?
I think not.

Advertising policy and spammers
I have a question about Metafilter's Textad policy. In general, I find the ads relevant and useful --- I'm far more likely to click through here than on other sites.
However, I noticed today that there's an ad running that asks people to "Play Texas Hold'em", posted by checknraise. Those of you who run Movable Type or Wordpress blogs might have noticed a recent wave of comment spam advertising "Texas Hold'em".
If I had ads on my blog, I wouldn't accept them from people who are also spammers. Does Metafilter have a policy on this type of thing, and is there any way to dump the "Texas Hold'em" ads?

I got spammish mail post-posting.
I posted a link. Shortly thereafter, I get creepy spam-mail asking me to post links to Joe Blow's slightly-related site. I ignore. Not long, though, until link appears in comments. Does this ever happen to anyone else?
the metafilter wiki has been spammed by an online casino site
it looks as though the metafilter wiki has been spammed pretty badly by an online casino site, with several pages of info replaced with their url and some gibberish. i've emailed adrian but wonder if anyone else besides him might have a back up copy of the site.
Slight problems with spammy selflinks in comments.
I don't want this to be construed as bullying the new folk, but... [as usual, more of my astute observations and keen insight are contained within]
Who joe-jobbed me?
36 hours ago, I posted a message in Ask Mefi regarding what it would take for the world to adopt a more secure method of email to prevent nefarious people from spoofing legitimate email accounts.
This morning, my inbox was flooded with hundreds of bounced spam emails from AOL, apparently unrelated to the MyDoom virus.
What I want to know is, who's the wiseguy?

Enough with the flash spam.
We needed another gratuitous product pitch? As the worthless Legs McNeil once said: please kill me.
Should this post be yanked before or after penis-enlargement-pills?
So this thread isn't exactly an advertisement, but it does link to a site whose actual purpose seems to be to sell some sort of penis-enlargement-pill.
I'm not saying that the post should get yanked, but I am wondering whether content whose purpose is to advertise a product should really be the subject of a front page post.

Spam from homeless guy who wants to be on MeFi
Anyone else getting spammed by some homeless guy to post his site as a mefi link? "I'd do it myself, but matt isn't taking new members right now."
If they guy had bothered to cut-and-paste more detail, I might have considered it ... maybe.
Anyone else?

What should we do about self-marketers who could enventually plant links on mefi?
yesterday, on./ was reading an interesting discussion about a product when someone accused the poster of Viral Marketing, in effect really trying to grab publicity off of ./ while they're covertly under contract to the company they are posting about.
Today, in a very useful MeFi discussion, someone raised the Same Suspicion.
Whether Octavius is correct or not, I think there's no reason to doubt that firms are cropping up to harness communities and blogs to plant publicity on the net. On its face, it would likely be far more effective advertising than a pop up or TV commercial... Once the corporate heavyweights catch on, it could get quite excessive and sneaky.
But it could seriously undermine a community since to some extent, we'll all start scrutinizing the motives of any given post and poster.
Could well be the beginning of the end (or at least the end of the beginning) of the innocence for MeFi etal... Any ideas on how to contend with this?

Spam the spammers!
In response to email-harvesters, how about implementing this as an invisiible link on each metafilter page. It generates an unlimited stream of bogus email addresses, thereby poluting the email list. Spam the spammers!
Klez attack
Uh...who the *expletive* is jeff_cook(at)nai.com, and why the *expletive* is he spamming me, and presumably others, with a screenshot of the MeFi donation thanks page?
Shape Shifting Reptilians about to acheive Complete Control over the planet
This is going to sound like a bizarre joke, but did anyone else on the 'Filter get spam about "Shape Shifting Reptilians about to acheive Complete Control over the planet", with a link that leads to this guy's site. It was sitting in my inbox when I got home today, I can't think of where else on the 'Net I coulda picked this up, and if it's a prank it's a good one, but it's so weird that only a MeFite could've come up with it.

announcement: non-logged in users can no longer see contact info.
I made a slight change to the user pages. Logged in users see everything as it was before, but non-logged in users don't see any contact information except for websites URLs. I had long worried about the spam thwarting measures I have employed not being good enough, and I've also been hearing about non-members hassling members for memberships, posting, etc. So with the new change, non-members won't be able to harvest addresses, or send you an email (unless you've got it listed on your homepage URL somewhere), and they won't know your AIM/ICQ or location.
Tips for hiding email addresses from spam bots
Zeldman offers some tips and tools on hiding email address from spam bots. Maybe that could be used instead of the %40?

spam harvester posted for discussion
Aiiee! Make it stop! Yet another e-mail spam harvester posted for "discussion". These are generally tiresome and dangerously close to content-free sites that some schlub whipped up between smoke breaks -- the web equivalent of trolls. They're built with a content management system that automatically begs people to send it to friends, thereby collecting the e-mail addresses. And they don't belong on Metafilter. Or has Metafilter changed that much?
Are people from dotcomscoop.com spamming mefi?
I noticed an odd trend recently in the way a couple new people were posting and I think I've uncovered a problem. (more)

Mickey Suttle
Is Mickey Suttle back? In his newest incarnation (as "ordinaryworld") he's posted three links, two (less than two weeks apart) to amandahades.com and one to supershadow.com. And of course these link to each other, and to other sites in the Suttle "empire." In his previous incarnation (as "supremecourt," "historical", "jpl" and "vehicle"!) we talked about him here.
Email addresses with weird characters?
Why do so many people's email addresses display with weird charaters in them? Seems to be that way for everyone. The HREFs are okay, though.
