A warm fireplace with overstuffed chairs
Is anyone willing to create a MetaParlour? [Come into my thread, said the swan to the MeFites]

Um. Doesn't this belong in AskMe instead?

the penis one really brought out the jokiness
Could we not? I'm pretty sure questions like that aren't what Matt had in mind.
Heartwarming chatfilter
I've never bothered to call out and Ask Metafilter thread before, but threads such as this one are growing at an alarming rate, as was detailed the other day in metatalk. While I'm sure we all agree--or a relatively large percentage of us seem to, anyway--that these threads often result in some heart-warming tales, leaving so many of them up is probably sending the wrong message. This one is still early enough that it hasn't attained the too-heart-warming-to-delete stage that the parents thread did the other day, but it violates many of the same principles fundamental to ask metafilter (there's no query with a helpful response, only a solicitation of what could admittedly be charming anecdotes).
Can we delete this please?
Not designed to solve a problem. Begs a bunch of purely hypothetical discussion. Flamebait right from the very first comment. Heave-ho or what?
why "why do people smoke?" went up in smoke
What just happened to ossibuke's "why do people smoke?" question?
What is cool on Metafilter?
What is cool on metafilter? [A suggested antidote to some bad metatalk vibes]
"here's my favorite recipe" for snark on rye
Please tell me that "here's my favorite recipe" FPP's are not going to become a habit.
'what kind of music do you like'
snarkiness aside, we've got 1, 2, 3, 4 'what kind of music do you like' threads popping up in the past three days. sure these threads get lots of comments, but they're not what this site is about. and when they propogate like this, it scares me. does one such post beget others? and can we, as a community, do anything about it? do we want to do anything about it... or do we love these threads too much to let go?
Chatfilter posts are bad posts.
Bad Post Callout
What do we conclude about a thread that simply poses a question?
How much airport security is too much?
I'm really sorry to bring this up, i discovered this site while actually looking for a old court case. But i saw the comments that had been put up about the man with the bombs in his shoes. On sunday i arrived at the Reno/Tahoe int. airport 3 hours early , so that i would make sure i had plenty of time to reach the flight. My husband had been radnomly picked for the bags checks. Not only did they search our bags while checking in, and i mean taking everything out. My nair clippers, tweezers, and razors which were in my checked baggage removed from my travel bag. At the check point my husband had to remove his shoes so they good inspect them he basically was strip searched. Okay so after all of that we reach our gate. Getting ready to board the plane we were again taken out of line to have our carry on bags searched. In the middle of a busy airport boarding a plane to Houston, they removed very personel female items from my back pack opening the box to where every person in that area would see them. Every item pulled out and gone through. not only was it bad enough with how overboard they have taken these measures to, But to publicly humilate the person;some computer picked is closely on the board of haressment. This also happen once we landed in Houston and were begining to board the same airline to finish travelling to Jacksonville,Fl. I know that i will not ever fly that airline again. But the reason i wrote was to ask how far is too far for the airlines to go? I realize i'm no where near as smart as lot of the members of this website are. And i'm sorry if i bored you.
What do you guys think?
Is every post just looking for opinions? Of the past 6 posts, 4 of them are just posting links to random pop culture links, and asking "What do you guys think?" [more inside]
Signs you are spending too much time on MetaFilter
"There have been no links and 1 comment posted since your last visit"
And it's yours. Is there a better sign you're spending too much time on MetaFilter?

Linkless post proves irksome.
This is getting tiresome. What baffles me is why people even respond in a thread without a link. If I wanted that type of discussion, I'd go to Salon.
Change is the only constant
well, i think it's unrealistic to expect that there is such a thing as an ultimate format or anything of the sort. not to be inflammatory, but times change. fashions change. designs change. i guess that when you get down to it, people eventually get bored with whatever's been overplayed, and move on. which is sort of how top 40s music works, if you think about it.
and, just like in the music industry, the sites that last will be those interesting and innovative sites like k10k that are constantly evolving and constantly adding new and interesting content. the sites that won't are the ones which are difficult to distinguish from the next weblog.
all imo

a place for whoever happens to stop by to post their thoughts ...
i was thinking of a team type weblog ... not really a metafilter type thing ... and not quite just a discussion board. but more like a place for whoever happens to stop by to post their thoughts ... (more>)
Why Blog?
What's the point of personal weblogs? Does it fulfill some psychological need? Is it for attention? For fun? I'm trying to figure it out myself.
I just started my own, and it's like... why am I doing this? It seems like a waste of my time. I'd really like to do one, but... I just don't know. And reading other peoples'... I mean, I'll never meet these people, never REALLY get to know them. I'm just posting my random thoughts to a webpage. But it's not like a journal, which I really enjoy, because it's not tangible, it's not there, for you to touch, to write in. Why do you guys and gals blog?
