Not really a pony, but more of a WTF: Why are there ads for Zingr on the sidebar?

Miracle Whip Zingr beta? That deserves a graphic ad on the front page, even when logged in? Did the advertising guidelines change recently? [more inside]

What's with the PageFlakes ads? I dont really care if they are there, I just posted this so some other people can vent if needed.

Advertisments are not the best of the web.

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I am logged in and see ads from fmpub.net on the front page. The ad presently displayed invites me to "chew the fat at serious eats". It's the same ad after multiple refreshes also. While I am a fan of bacon, I don't normally see ads when I'm logged in. This is all the more curious given that I'm using adblock plus and don't usually see ads on any site. Is this a temporary thing, or is bacon now an integral part of the site?

How long has MeFi been serving banner ads at the bottom of closed threads to logged-in users?

Vox ads, even for members? I use the plain text theme and I see these ads on the front page of Mefi and AskMe.

I know this has come up before but I don't want to see any ads. That was one of my reasons for slapping my £2.69 on the barrelhead. As far as I can tell opinion seems to be fairly evenly split between members who don't want to see ads at all and those who don't mind. Therefore, please make a preference so that those who wish to see ads can see them (or vice versa, I don't give a monkey's).

So, Um, I'm logged in and I'm getting upper right graphical ads on MeFi and AxMe. Is that on purpose? Because, y'know, I thought the purpose of being logged in all the time and having an account was to not have to see ads, and I didn't see an announcement that they'd be starting. Then again, if it's necessary to pay for bandwidth, OK, but I'd prefer a donation drive.

I just bought Google ads on MetaFilter for one of the projects I've posted here (still valiantly trying to get the word out)...but I can't see the ads unless I log out. Is there a way for me to choose to see the ads when logged in? FWIW, I'd imagine that some of the MeFi supporters would be happy to see them as another way to support the site (I would, and do this on another site which I am a paying member).

I may be missing something obvious (checked previous metatalk queries) but this post has an advert in it shown in Firefox but not in IE. The advert is for www.ecological.co.uk. Is there a reason for it? I don't remember an adverts on/off feature.

dynamic.fmpub.net: It's come up before, and I know I can block it in my hosts file, but why does loading/rendering the entirety of Ask.Metafilter depend on contacting this site? When it is slow to respond, the entire site seems to hang, which should be avoided.

If you want to help me and the site out, take a short survey to help match the site up with future advertisers. I'll publish a summary of results after it's done.

Why do posts without tags appear with the mysterious copy "Tags: Wanna reach people who know their way around the Web? Contact FM." in place of a blank "Tags:" field in the newish Yahoo search results? (posted under bugs out of a better place to file it)

The front page was festooned with a big ugly flashing ad today. I thought members didn't see ads. Bug or feature?

First Amendment issue? I have to say I've been really grossed out the last couple of days by the dead puppies picture in the ads on MeFi. I'm not for censorship---but similar to a NSFW notice, can't there be an icky picture warning that you can choose to click or not? I understand that is the point of the ad, to raise my ire (or bile) so I'll do something. But ewww.

What's the story behind the "GoToMyPC" ads on the MeFi front page? Even for the logged-in.
I notice they are the only advertiser for that spot and that it appears for the non-members in the same place.

Is this a big new advertising deal for you, Matt, or is it a template issue? Are we being sold to again, and if so, why?

(don't know if this should be in "MeFi-related" or "etiquette/policy")

Matt, either I missed the official announcement that you're ending the Text Ads program or there wasn't one ... What up? Not a lot of interest or...?

I heart the Jewelboxing flash ad in the Blue sidebar! I have wasted many happy seconds mousing over the case to watch in infantile fascination! ...open the case... close the case! ...open the case... close the case!

I hit the blue page the other day and saw a JUST POSTED story that was nothing more than a link to a page where you can buy a t-shirt with a design/slogan on it. (I'm not mentioning/linking-to which one it was because that isn't the purpose of this post). The FPP was deleted within minutes (from when I noticed it). However, today I see that it is listed in the Blogads on the front page. All is as it should be - I'm not complaining - I just think it is interesting that self-linkers apparently (sometimes?) get the opportunity to purchase an ad that they were trying to get for free.

Can we lose orange clock and keep chicobangs, please? Okay, that's not the best way to say it. I am no angel myself, but this beyond-the-pale swipe at chicobangs and mathowie - from a member of dubious contribution overall (IMHO) - should not go ignored.

Matt Haughey has shown tremendous compassion by rejecting a large revenue stream for the sake of this major Internet community. Rare is the system admin who is both concerned and available. I'd like to remind the users there exists a way to thank him and fund the site directly.

Matt's clearly not being compensated adequately for the time and $$ he spends on this place, and the avenues open to him are apparently distasteful to many of us. As fun as it is to complain about SG, it might be even more fun coming up with a way to replace the SG revenue ourselves. -->

So yeah, suicide girls. After some teeth gnashing, and asking all my female friends about taking on suicide girls image ads on mefi, I decided to take them (they seem tasteful to me -- I dropped the ones showing too much skin) with the caveat that a simple click and anyone could hide them forever. Here's what I said when I took their first textad long ago and the same applies here. They are as racy as I will go, and this won't start a slippery slope as they're the exception to the rule.

The UNICEF ad on (not logged in) MeFi is a little funky. I think they were expecting a white background. As it is, the child's face and the "relief" text to the left of it are obscured. Not a big deal, just thought I'd mention it. So this isn't just a complaint, I'm happy to copy/modify/send it somewhere, but I don't know to whom that'd go.

Not my call, but I don't think that "Asses of Evil" blogad does anything for MetaFilter's aesthetic, perceived image or credibility.

Looks like some users are using MeFi text ADs to post google linkfarms. Example: This site, and this one.

Matt, that jewelboxing ad on the front page makes my browser hang (Safari.) When can I start paying you to not see any ads on Metafilter?

"Nekkid Celebrities, updated daily" kinda caught my eye in a TextAd. I don't actually see anything in the TextAd policy this clearly violates, so maybe it's fine. I'm at work so I haven't clicked the link to check, but thought I'd mention it.

Is it possible/good karma to turn off the adbar on the side, now that I'm one of the (mass of) elite Metafilter users? I don't want to do it in general -- paying for the existence of MeFi is something I'm quite happy to do by showing ads -- but from school I get a fair amount less bandwidth (University wireless is a mess) and every little bit I can trim out is a good thing by me.

I have a question about Metafilter's Textad policy. In general, I find the ads relevant and useful --- I'm far more likely to click through here than on other sites.

However, I noticed today that there's an ad running that asks people to "Play Texas Hold'em", posted by checknraise. Those of you who run Movable Type or Wordpress blogs might have noticed a recent wave of comment spam advertising "Texas Hold'em".

If I had ads on my blog, I wouldn't accept them from people who are also spammers. Does Metafilter have a policy on this type of thing, and is there any way to dump the "Texas Hold'em" ads?
