Moving Day!
This Saturday we are planning some downtime of about one hour some time around 10am Pacific. We'll put up a big banner across the top of the site tomorrow to give everyone an additional heads up and post updates to the status blog. [more inside]
Server upgrayedd (the extra d is for a double dose of downtime)
We're in the process of updating the server. You probably noticed about 20min of downtime and things may be up and down throughout this evening but should resume and hopefully be faster later today and tomorrow.

Downtime
Sorry about the downtime today, it looks like some comment spammers were DoSing the box with requests for long-dead trackback URLs. After that was cleaned up, some other weird bugs kept the server unavailable for a few hours, but things should be back to normal now.
Comedy of Server Errors
Sorry for the downtime, I was tweaking one small aspect of the server when a comedy of errors ended up with two hours of hair pulling before the server was reachable once again. Everything should be back to normal now.
Server outages
MetaFilter, MetaTalk, and Ask Metafilter might be sporadic over the next day or so, as the server hosting the DNS has died for now. Hopefully that server will be back tomorrow morning, but if not, you could hack your hosts file to point the three domains at 209.10.108.201.

Just a heads up, I'm in the middle of a slightly messed up software upgrade in process - expect things to be broken for the next few hours
Upgrades in the Works
Uptime will probably be sporadic over the next few days while I do some software and hardware upgrades. On the upside, I get to bask in the glow of the server while I do the upgrades.

Sorry about the downtime, I was moving from one place to another, far away. Things should be back to normal now.
There seems to be a router problem somewhere on the east coast
There seems to be a router problem somewhere on the east coast (looks like globex's mae east facility is having probs), according to my traceroutes. I can barely reach the site. If you're having trouble connecting as well, that's the issue, it's not the server or Jason's t-1 line.

DNS issues related to server switch
There were DNS issues today, there might be more soon, as I switch to new servers. Beware.

ugh. Server is slow/dying for no known reason. I'll be trying to get the new server up as soon as I can this week.

Server Upgrade
Just an FYI: thanks to the enormous generosity of my dad, there will be a new server for MetaFilter, which should be up sometime next week.
Lately the traffic has been killing the box, and memory is always being maxed out.
The new box will have more than double the horsepower in terms of Mhz and RAM. It'll be kickass.
