Why can't I set my timezone to -5 (EST)? It's not an option in the drop-down menu.

So you've been planning for years to be the first person to make a post concerning scanning cats tonight. I can personally tell you, it is like joining a very prestigious and sexy VIP club. Oh the massages and seafood buffet! Don't forget though, in the spirit of friendly competition, the MeFi Server time is in a Particular Time Zone. Or else we'll laugh at you until universal heat death. Game on.

I've got my timezone set to UTC but Meta thinks it's 0.25 on the 14th when it's actually 23.25 on the 13th. Is this a 2k7 date hack that's fecked the site up for all non-Americans, or has the time gone wrong for everyone?

Looks like the time zone code is broke. Everything is showing up PST for me, even though I've got Eastern set.

Hey Matt, you're applying daylight saving time to timezones labeled as "UTC+-X (someplace)" in preferences...

When is the best time for a UK mefite to post in Askme for a quick response. I'd assume this would involve establishing the area/timezone the majority of me-fites are in and when they logon / read and respond. Where are you and when do all y'all "check in" or do your posting?
(And should this be an Askme question?!)

Just now in a comment I tried to include a link to a URL which contained a seven-letter word beginning with "f" that has become an epithet for those on the right side of the political spectrum. I tried to post it twice and both times when I hit "post" the screen refreshed but my post didn't show up. Is there some sort of filtration going on? Shouldn't I be told?

Time zones are funny when previewing comments on AskMe. I have my time zone set at Central. When I use live preview, my comments appear with Pacific time. I did the cookies/logout deal, and it still does it.

TimezonePony .... It's that time of the year again. Instead of showing the false EST/PST/etc standard timezone stamps, can the system be tweaked to either show the correct EDT/PDT/etc, or at least ET/PT/etc? Cue snarks.

Why is the time wrong, as I view it? Sitting here on the Australian east coast, it's 5:10 pm, or UTC + 10, which is how my preferences are set. So what's the Metafilter setting, where's it gone wrong?

Time Zone problem? My prefs are set to display the Eastern TZ, yet I'm seeing everying in PT. I think this is a recent phenomenon, though I may have just missed it before.

Bug: The posts on the front page (www) all have my correct timezone. However, posts to Metatalk and Ask are all reported as PST. Can you please make them in terms of my configured timezone?

Posting to bugs, but not sure if there's something I'm missing - I can set my preferences to GMT or whatever the other abbreviation is, and this shows up on the MeFi front page but not on AskMeFi and MetaTalk. Am I missing something?

Time-zone custom settings don't work properly for AskMe or MeTa, you California-centric bastard.

It's 12:52 am in New York. For Mefites in earlier time zones {GMT -6 etc} does this post show up as being made on the 11th or 10th?

"EST" = "Eastern Standard Time"; "EDT" = "Eastern Daylight saving Time"; "ET" = "Eastern Time" (no standard/daylight specified -- usually obvious which it is). It's to be expected that people will make these mistakes in FPPs and comments, but could you tweak the code so it doesn't say "EST" when it really doesn't mean "EST"? Rather than trying to come up with some code algorithm, or trying to remember to make the DST change every six months, just call it ET / CT / PT / etc and be done with it. A pet peeve of mine ...

It's currently 05:37 JST. Metafilter says it's 06:37 JST. I doublechecked, but the user configuration is correct: UTC + 9 hours. Is Mefi applying daylight savings time to Coordinated Universal Time, throwing off calculations?

Time Zones don't appear to have been mentioned much in recent times.
And I was wondering whether migration of time zone tweaking to MeTalk and AskMeFi would still be going ahead? I get so confuzzled down here at times.

PST slippage in the blue... Occasionally my time reference on MeFi gets whacked back to PST, though my preferences are EST. When I see the problem, I edit my profile (changing nothing), submit and ta-da, EST. Don't need no pony, just bringing it up. Happens ~ once a month.

Tried deleting cookies, logging out and in, but whilst MeFi shows my timezone as set in my preferences, MeTa is a different timezone. Frisbee... sorry... discuss.

The clocks went forward an hour in the UK at the weekend, so the GMT timing on posts is now an hour too early ...

MetaFilter's front page now supports the display of posts by proper time zone. Set your offset on the customize page, then go to the front page (with the default date sort only at this time) to see the site customized for your part of the world. I'll be adding support for the comments and archives later today. MetaTalk, I'll eventually get to.

Is there any chance the time can be displayed in the top right hand corner in metafilter again?
It's disapeared, I'm in GMT, and so I cannot work out how old the threads are.
Either that, or is it possible to display all the times in GMT, or let the user choose which timezone they want displaying? Fanks very much.

a minor request: could the time on the home page be user-relative?
i have the annoying habit of taking every timestamp i see at face value, and i'm not in PST, so it creates a little hiccup in my brain.
