Quick Design Improvement Test
We tweaked the colors a little on the MetaFilter home page to address some uncertainties people had mentioned. At any time you can click here to opt out of the test. [more inside]
How do "recommended" questions work on My Ask?
I always visit AskMeFi via My Ask. I have three categories turned off that don't interest me: Human Relations, Pets & Animals, and Work & Money. However, several of the 14 questions listed as "recommended" for me in the right-hand sidebar at the present moment fall into categories I don't want to see (three are in HR, one in W&M).
I realize this list is, of course, machine-generated, but it would seem to make sense that if I've excluded a category in My Ask, a question in one of those categories should not get recommended for me. Mods, how exactly is the recommended list created, and any thoughts on tweaking how it works?
Asheville's 20th brewery was almost called...
We almost got our own beer.
Wonder who owns the name?

"Providing a youthful counterbalance to Rusty’s crotchety ways"
Today I was pleased to notice that Metafilter's Own℠ Avery Edison is the new intern over at Today in Tabs, which is now back from a month's hiatus. That's all. If you don't subscribe you could probably do it now. Or, if that's too much of a commitment, it's also syndicated at FastCompany.

Tell Us A Fascinating Thing About Yourself
... That we don't already know from chatting with you on the site. In fact, aim for the weirdest thing you do but don't talk about, or your stupidest human trick. Go!

Who are the answeringest mefites?
If one is a habitué of AskMe who devotes himself more to satisfying his own curiosity than resolving the problems facing his fellows, one is apt to find, among the ranks of those who are more helpful, that some among us dispose over a sufficiently wide-ranging expertise, or all-encompassing benevolence, that their names recur with a frequency so apparently noticeable that one's thoughts are naturally led to the question of whether the said frequency is merely apparent or is in fact real, a question to be settled not by the comparison of anecdotes and impressions, prey as all such are to the biases afflicting all finite creatures, but by the totting up and comparison of figures, which, though they be in one manner of speaking finite, admit of another view on which Plato's placement of them in the heavens, rather than under the changeable moon with ourselves, quite appropriate—and which makes it fortunate that cortex placed several useful figures in the clouds if not the heavens, so that the curious can indeed determine who the answeringest mefites are, considering the "answeringness" of a mefite to be the ratio of the number of distinct questions posted to "the green" to which the mefite has submitted at least one answer, to the total number of distinct questions posted to "the green" following the first question the said mefite answered, that question marking the mefite's first becoming active on AskMe, and excluding, as apt to be uninformative, those participants of AskMe whose first answer was posted within the last six months. Quick Modern Theme Updates
We made a few changes to the modern theme today. At mobile widths, the Skip button is now no longer the Skip button—it's an arrow pointing down. At tablet/iPad widths there's a new similar down arrow button in the fixed header that appears as you scroll. And behind the scenes we enabled Grunticon as a fallback for older phones that don't have SVG support. [more inside]

#WomensMarch Discussion / Support thread
The last #WomensMarch MetaTalk thread has closed; I would like one open to discuss what's happening, and if anyone needs to throw out a question.

Quick FanFare Updates
We made a couple changes to FanFare today. We added a show, movie, and podcast search to the front page sidebar. For movies we added links to buy or watch a particular movie at Amazon (if it's available). And we updated how movies are posted. [more inside]
Dance post
A few years ago, someone had posted a video on the blue of a woman's progress as she learned to dance, starting with clumsy steps and eventually showing an impressive routine (in front of a subway car, if memory serves). I've searched for this under every search item I could think of, but nothing turned up. Please hope me…?
Jokes, as far as the eye can see…
Please help me find a fantastic thread full of mefites' best jokes!
That is unfortunately all I have to go on. I don't particularly remember the timeframe, and I assume the question was something like "Tell me your best joke," but my search is not turning up anything useful. [more inside]

Survey about sexual orientation of surveyor changing results
A while ago on the Blue (I think) I saw an article about an experiment done where the people giving the survey would either make some comment that indicated they were homosexual or not, and the results of the survey changed based on that. I can't find this article now, when I have a speech on LGBT rights. [more inside]

This Pony Wants A Job
Right now, it looks like you can make unlimited posts of jobs in the "jobs" section, but you can only post one notice of availability that has to stay forever and can't be changed or added to or bumped up or otherwise flagged that "Hey, I'm still looking". Can we....do something about that? [more inside]
New mobile ads for logged-out readers on Ask
Just a heads up: we're testing out a new ad provider for logged-out, mobile site readers in Ask Metafilter threads. [more inside]
Should have just checked here first.
Twice in the past month I've sought information on the wider web only to find that the answer was here all along. Turns out that noise in my head is my tensor tympani muscles flexing and that someone else had a question about that line from L&O:SVU a decade ago (they really did need a warrant to arrest someone in his own home). So: what cool things have you left MeFi to find, only to find them back here on MeFi?

Are any of you still using Ello?
If not, where've you all gone? Where do I go to find Mefites away from MeFi?

Ann Patchett interview?
Does anyone remember where this is? Some younger writer went to interview Patchett, it was delightful, I think they visited the bookshop. Was it here I found the link?

Comics (& other serialized content) on Fanfare
On Fanfare Talk, some mefites have expressed interest in discussing comic books on Fanfare; the necessary metadata could come from comixology or comicbookdb. What do other folks think about this idea? And are there other serialized media (ideally with metadata sources) that might be good to add?
MeFi Fantasy Baseball 2015
The League Office has moved from Chicago to San Jose, celebrate perpetual baseball weather in Metafiler's 2015 Tenth Annual Mazda Butterball Fantasy Baseball League. [more inside]
Length limit for MeFi posts?
I wanted to ask MeFites and the mods if there is any interest in having some sort of length limit for MetaFilter posts. [more inside]
A sort-of-wake for Terry Pratchett
I would like to arrange a meetup in the memory of Terry Pratchett. It was great going through his obit thread the other day. Terry's books influenced me a lot and helped me think about so many things in so many new ways.
And I think, it would be a good idea to get together to give Terry a hearty, joyous send off. We could all come togather, assume names from list of characters from his writings, may be even dress like some of them and discuss, drink and celebrate life, his and our own. [more inside]

April Showers
I'd like to propose a negative- free month. As in BEST of the web. As we transition from Matt to Josh, I think it would be nice to re-visit metafilter and get back to it's core business. Best of the web. Let me repeat that. Best of the web. If it's fighty, don't post it. If it's political, don't post it. Well, go ahead, but it's not part of April Showers.
You know what I mean. Can we spend April ignoring the Worst of the web? Is it possible? Are you folks willing to just find stuff that brings a smile to people's faces?
It's a challenge. I'd like to keep metafilter somewhat happy. And give the mods a month of fun. [more inside]

Keeping Offsite Offsite
Metafilter as a general policy does not consider offsite behavior from the moderator perspective unless it is something ridiculously egregious. If you want to talk trash on a user here over on Reddit, more power to you. I think that's kind of jerky if you make a habit out of it, but whatever. People need an outlet. This is not in general a bad policy at all. I like that I can be more free wheeling with my commentary elsewhere without it potentially souring my relationship with this community. So in general, there is a firewall between offsite and onsite behavior and the potential for mod involvement. We've had debates about to what degree that should be the case in the past, but I think the consensus has been pretty clear that this is the right way to go so I don't really want to re-fight that battle. deddit
Given this FPP about reddit's racism, and with the notion presented in that thread here, I'd like to float the idea of a blanket ban on links to reddit on the Blue. [more inside]

MeFi catch-up
I sort of forgot to read MetaTalk over the course of the past year or so, and I was shocked to hear of Mathowie's recent retirement. It got me thinking, what other major Metafilter news did I miss out on?
Did they eat that?
AskMe often receives questions of the "Can I Eat This?" variety. It would be nice if, when these were marked resolved, the OP was able to indicate whether they had, after all, eaten it, and if so, record what happened (presumably they didn't die, or they wouldn't be around to mark it resolved). My preference would be a little button and a field, with some way of tabulating the results, but it could be just a suggestion included in the "resolve" letter. [more inside]

Pony This Song to MeFi
We have a one-stop button for posting MeFi Projects to Metafilter. Could we also get a one-stop button for posting MeFi Music to Metafilter?

One last chance to be moderated by Matt: feel free to be extreme.
So, mathowie, you are still with us for one last night, as a so-called moderator. Interesting. Beguiling, even. Show us then: what are the uncouthnesses, insubordinations and downright fripperies up with which you will not put, while you are still in power?

102: Retired
Episode 102 was recorded yesterday and completed moments before we made my retirement post live so things are a little weird and scattered since I didn't know how people would take it yet. It runs about 90min long and covers the month of February on the site. [more inside]

The tiniest of #ponies
Well, perhaps not *that* tiny -- if one goes to the main Tags page, one finds a spiffy tag cloud of most-often-used tags. What I would love to see is the ability to enter a tag to search by -- say a text field with submit button. [more inside]

Is there a way to see the tags on a post when using the mobile platform? If not, can this be added? Thanks awesome people!
