★ I help fund MetaFilter!
Did you know that there's a Chrome extension that will let you add Metafilter's Amazon affiliate code to every Amazon link you click? It also adds the tag every time you navigate directly to Amazon. It works on all international Amazon sites and a couple of other Amazon-related sites. [more inside]
Bug: Pasting links into comments
I'm no longer able to paste URLs into the link-helper alert window on Chrome. It just replaces the link text with the URL. Still works on Firefox. Example GIF. [more inside]
PSA: "Stylish" browser add-on steals your internet history
The popular "Stylish" browser extension, which allows you to download custom styles for a given site (such as making text more readable, removing UI cruft, or adding a professional white background), has been silently logging its users web activity for the last year and a half. The new owners of the add-on at the time, SimilarWeb, offer products including “Market Solutions To See All Your Competitors’ Traffic.” [more inside]
Pony request: mobile edition or better responsiveness
I have trouble posting to Meta on my phone. I don't access any personal accounts on my work laptop during the day but when I'm at lunch by myself I'm reading Metafilter on my phone. Here's what I see when I try to post a comment or AskMe response. This is the latest version of Chrome on the latest version of iOS on an iPhone 7.
Portrait: The post box is much wider than the screen and the keyboard is over the box as well. It requires much scrolling left and right which causes a back button event if you aren't careful.
Landscape is even worse. My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I often read in landscape view. But the on-screen keyboard is tall enough to bump into the URL bar and there's no way I can post in landscape view.
I looked at the site in the Chrome dev tools in the mobile view and it looks fine but on the device itself not so much.

Calm MetaFilter extension
After posting my Calm Twitter extension to Projects, I figured I ought to make one for MetaFilter as well. Briefly, it is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that guides you through a deep breathing exercise before confirming that you really want to submit that comment. Example GIF of it in action. I hate autoplay videos.
I'm 99.9% sure that there's no practical way to get the user base to stop linking to sites that have autoplay video embedded in them, but as a techno-doof, I'm wondering if there's any kind of, I don't know, pass-through or something that can generate URLs that set autoplaying videos to not play? Like an appended bit of code along with all the tracking kerfuffle on the URL?
Failing that, any recommendations for video autoplay blockers for Chrome that actually work would be most welcome. My test page (which all the autoplay blockers fail at blocking autoplay on) is this one, which was linked from this post.
On iOS, Chrome seems to work better than Safari for very long posts.
... that is all.
Holy Uncanny Diagonal Lines, Batman!

GraphFi + user tags chrome extension
Hi friends,
Remember when yourcelf made GraphFi and it was great? Well, it still is great, only now it is also available as a chrome extension that I threw together.
I've also added another thing that I've always wanted to make threads easier to follow - user tagging!
Yay! Enjoy it (or hate it), and let me know what you think!

Decent Activity
Hey, so way back when, I wanted an "LJ friends" sort of view of MetaFilter – something that would let you see all of your "friends'" comments on MetaFilter, regardless of the number of favorites. I remembered that in the last few months and put together a Chrome extension, Decent Activity (thanks to Ian A.T. for the name!) that shows all of your mutual contacts' comment in reverse chronological order. So, if you are also interested in that sort of view, there it is! [more inside]
Looking for useful feedback: MetaFilter tools by mdevore
Recently there were some Greasemonkey scripts and Chrome extension tools for MetaFilter posted to MeFi Projects and I thought they warranted special mention, as not everyone may be aware of them. They're from programmer (and Mefite) mdevore (Michael Devore). Direct link here. [more inside]
Nancy, a Chrome extension for Metafilter
After the enhanced update of the diediedead Greasemonkey script, I received several requests from MeFites for a native Chrome extension, mostly because Chrome's Tampermonkey doesn't support all features, such as the context menu. I promised and, finally, I deliver: Nancy, available at the Chrome Web Store. Yeah, kind of a mouthful. [more inside]
Like browsing MeFi in a shrouded theater
A lot of people have complained about FanFare's professional white background. Well, DRUNK WITH POWER after somehow kludging together a successful CSS theme for /r/MetaFilter with zero experience, I decided to try my hand at giving our new subsite a makeover, too -- the layout is fine, but that glaring white is painful to read in a darkened teevee room. Inspired by the original soothing dark blue color scheme from film/TV review aggregator Metacritic (which discarded it for an unpopular redesign years ago), I put together a complete FanFare theme (screenshot*) that adjusts not just the background and text, but stuff like visited links, link hovering, the pop-up video button and lightbox, posting page notes, live preview area, and the sidebar and Deck ad box. You can install it in Firefox (with Greasemonkey or Stylish), Chrome (with Stylish or Blank Canvas Script Handler), and jailbroken iOS (with Userscript Loader, using this URL) -- it's tested and working properly on all three. Mefiquote for Chrome/Tampermonkey?
Does Mefiquote work for any Chrome users out there? How did you get it running?
Mefi extensions all died
Chrome suddenly has disallowed extensions if they don't come from the chrome web store, and you cannot re-enable them, and this includes all my metafilter ones (deleted posts, scroll tag). None of them appear to be in the chrome store. This appears to be a deliberate decision by Google -- is someone (I don't know who wrote them immediately, but I definitely lack the knowledge to do so) going to put them in the Chrome store? Or is there a workaround? Do I go back to Firefox?
How Did This Happen?

Like Google but Better: The Chrome-Ask-Mefi link
It may be that I am the last person to have figured this out, and if so, then I apologize, but I just discovered the lovely customized search engine feature of google chrome to automatically delve through askmefi troves for pearls of wisdom.
Basically, in Chrome's preferences pages, in the manage custom search engines area, I plugged in this URL: https://www.google.ca/#q=site:ask.metafilter.com+%s
and set up "ask" as the keyword.
Now, in the address bar, I can just type "ask", then Tab, and then whatever keyword, and I get a lovely list of the relevant askmefi pages (see here).
In so many cases, its better than Google!

All the videos - have 'em all!
In response to threads like this in which there are a lot of videos to watch, I wrote a Chrome extension that plays all the YouTube videos linked on a page, one after another in one player. [more inside]
HowlsOfOutrage lives again, expands
Due to a couple of recent MetaFilter user requests to return it to working status, I have updated the popular (6K+ downloads on userscripts, more elsewhere) HowlsOfOutrage Greasemonkey script. The script displays a popup window of all users favoriting a particular MetaFilter post or comment on mouse hover over the favorites text. In addition, I've updated the Chrome extension, and added a new Safari extension. Testing was successful, but not exhaustive. All completely free as always, natch. [more inside]
My Ask (and other internal tabs) won't click refresh
I had My Ask open for a while, and I went to refresh it by clicking the My Ask text link (like you can do with the Metafilter or AskMeFi text links at the top of the page). In this case, it put a hashtag at the end and did not refresh, and I had to do it by reloading the page with the browser button. [more inside]

Errors loading www.metafilter.com in the latest Google Chrome on OS X?
This is pretty strange and we've gotten 3-4 reports of members not being able to load anything on www.metafilter.com (ask, metatalk, everything else works) in just Google Chrome's latest version (Firefox/Safari work fine), on OSX. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? [more inside]
Greasemonkey hacks
Grease my monkey, guvnor: Greasemonkey scripts get talked about a lot in Metatalk comments, and they seem pretty useful. I would like to ask our more Greasemonkey-oriented friends to recommend the best ones and discuss their experience of installing and using them. [more inside]
