Music on Fanfare?
I was wondering what people think of the idea of adding "Music" as a category for posting on Fanfare? [more inside]
Making more room for nuanced discussion
I love Metafilter, especially the threads where we can come together as a community and share information, learn together, and come up with new ideas. But there’s been a really frustrating trend in some recent threads. [more inside]
Request to admins to just have weekly or even daily resets of the megath
From M-x shell on the most current megathread: "Request to admins to just have weekly or even daily resets of the megathread. Not wait for a user to make them, just make them automatically and close previous ones. I don't need another recap of links every time. Each thread should just have a link to previous one at the top and link to next one at the bottom." [more inside]
Can we not use gendered insults?
I really think the word bitch is problematic and highly offensive and adds nothing to the inclusivity here. This may be an antipodean thing but it’s a sexist and nasty insult.
May I request we discuss not using it? Or any gendered insults?
More explicit guidelines on what makes a good post?
This article by a closeted trans woman has been posted three times, and deleted three times, after a few early comments on the first posting largely agreed with another trans woman's critical take.
The deletion reasons have repeatedly cited "a number of elements" that "will make it really hard to have a good discussion". I would appreciate the mods or the general community saying what those elements are, and perhaps expanding the post guidelines to provide a permanent reference. Implicit social norms beyond the obvious "don't be a jerk" are exhausting to parse, especially in a text-only medium. Whatever was objectionable about the article, please just spell it out. MetaFilter: Multilingual Edition?
This post (and the previouslies mentioned in-thread by veggieboy) made me wonder whether posts and comments in languages other than English could/would be a welcome part of MetaFilter. [more inside]
FanFare MeMails on the Pony Express
Could we please give users the option to get two kinds of fanfare-related memails?
- An alert when someone starts a thread for an episode of a podcast/show that you're following on MyFanfare. (This is perhaps redundant, but I can't be the only one who doesn't think to wander over to MyFanfare that much…)
- A digest listing all of the new shows, podcasts (not individual episodes) and movies added to FanFare in the last week. I can't even think of all the media on which I'd be interesting in seeing the community's perspective, and this would be a good way to discover that other folks want to have those conversations as well.
Being kind about framing
Sometimes bad framing can make a discussion instantly go pear shaped. I would ask other users to pause and try to give links at least a cursory read-through before responding to solely what is written on the front page. Especially when your response is overridingly negative. Even a post with bad framing can have content that will generate quality discussion. [more inside]
New Features: FanFare Talk, and Movies
Today we're releasing a spot for discussing plans for TV and Movie watching (stuff like the Horror Film Club, the Summer camp series, etc) by adding a discussion area to FanFare called FanFare Talk. We're also adding the ability for new posts in the Movies section to be added by members instead of just me for the last couple months of testing. Both discussion posts and movie posts will need to be approved before going up, as TV shows still are moderated. The front page of FanFare has been updated to show the titles of recent Talk posts along with a new tab in the upper right to get to all the discussion posts. [more inside]
Mathowie should do an AMA
MetaFilter is a long-running site with plenty of long-time members, but it's always stayed fresh through a slow and steady influx of new users to add new perspectives and replace those who've left. With the recent slump in Google traffic, we should consider ways to more actively promote the site elsewhere, in order to maintain this healthy growth and make sure the site and its values do not become complete unknowns to newer generations of web users. In that spirit, I've acquired the subreddit /r/MetaFilter and given it a fabulous CSS makeover with loads of informative links on MeFi history and culture. [more inside]
New FanFare Feature: testing the waters with Movies
The FanFare site is evolving and we mentioned in the first post about it that we'll someday be moving into other areas of pop culture on the site. The TV experiments have gone pretty well so we're going to start playing with movies as a major post type matter on the site. [more inside]
Likelihood to "go smoothly": necessarily a positive quality in a topic?
I'm curious about the deletion message for an article I posted to the blue: "This is a kind of incoherent article on a topic that's not likely to go smoothly. -- restless_nomad". I have no objection to the deletion! But the stated reason raises an interesting question, I think: are good topics necessarily topics that generate discussions which go smoothly? [more inside]
outragetalk
I'm really disappointed that this Amazon thread was deleted. I saw the deletion reason but I think that the discussion that was happening was totally worthwhile, and though the FPP was a bit thin, we see much thinner posts that stand. I don't think just dismissing it as outragefilter is fair, if for no reason than it shuts down a great discussion that could have happened. I'd like to see it opened back up. [more inside]
Not A Forum
Should "Metafilter is a community blog, not a forum" be in the guidelines? [more inside]
Discourse and MetaFilter
We love the MetaFilter audience to bits, but we're not sure where Discourse -- a next-generation, 100% open source forum -- can fit in, if anywhere, in the existing MetaFilter empire. Are there any super-technical folks willing to dive in and host a Discourse instance for mefites? [more inside]
The Joy of FPPing
To people who have done this; why did you create Front Page Post(s) on MetaFilter? The motivations are interesting in themselves, and may also provide positive reasons for people to cross the rubicon from lurker to poster. [more inside]
How can we improve access to primary research on MetaFilter?
Is there a community consensus about best practices for disseminating subscription-only journal material in threads? Also, what can we do to improve access within the community to primary research? Blasdelb's excellent comment in the Lenski thread prompted me to ask about this. [more inside]
Is an FPP workable if it requires having read a specific book?
With this FPP as a starting point, I wanted to ask: Is an FPP where every attempt at discussion is impossible because you have to read a book about the subject first, a good FPP? [more inside]
Use Your Words
I'd like to have a discussion about use of the word mansplain on this website. Man or woman, doesn’t matter, if you use a word that many people find offensive, they're going to tune out what you have to say. In conversations about gender relations, is the objective to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding, or is it to demonstrate the destructive power of gendered insults by consistently ignoring repeated requests to stop using a word that people feel unfairly defined by? Because those two objectives are not compatible. [more inside]
Why aren't we doing this topic well?
Jessamyn: [Folks we're sort of done with the "what crayz thinks about this post" angle. Please email crayz directly if you want more of crayz's opinions, otherwise this is getting to the "Take it to MeTa" point. Put another way, everyone who continues to hyperrespond is also part of the problem here, please consider that.]
So, okay. Let's take it to Meta. As a community, we keep having the same conversation about sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances and other related issues. Sometimes, with positive results. Sometimes, not. Personal attacks fly back and forth, fueling anger and frustration. Why are so many of us talking past each other? Is there no possibility of finding common ground, or gaining further understanding and empathy from such incidents?
First Metafilter BDSM Symposium
In the interest of improving the quality of discourse in BDSM/kink-related threads on the Blue, may we talk about some common misconceptions about BDSM? Perhaps if some MeFite kinksters/allies are willing, we can do some Q&A about BDSM, kink, and "the scene". [more inside]
Bored now
Is there anything we can do to stop this happening? There are so many interesting conversations to have about trans issues and that ain't one. [more inside]
Can My Comments take me to my last comment on a post.
A pony request for the "my comments" view. It would be nice to be able to jump to the last comment one made in a topic from the "My Comments" view. It is sometimes difficult to follow the conversation from ones last post without searching.
Not perfect, but not bad
Why was the gen-x marriage thread closed? Maybe the OP didn't post perfectly and wanted to change something, but it was still a good discussion and the original post wasn't terrible.
What makes a good community manager?
"Yeah, yeah. Having a section of the site dedicated to talking about the site I originally designed that just to keep people from jabbering about like fonts that they didn’t like in the middle of a thread about some news event, and just being like shut up, don’t do that; having a place dedicated has been great because then people can talk openly about lots of things."The July 1st SitePoint podcast is a panel discussion on "...the profession of Online Community, how it’s grown in importance and profile, and what it means to today’s Web," conducted by Patrick O'Keefe, founder of the iFroggy Network: with Venessa Paech, Lead Community Manager of Community Engine; Sarah Hawk, Community Manager of SitePoint; and our own intrepid mathowie. What's the site policy on spoilers and ROT13?
Despite the fact that the recent (and excellent) Portal 2 thread on the blue was prefaced with massive spoiler warnings, a fairly large portion of the comments were ROT13'd, which impeded conversation in the comments, and made the whole thing rather difficult to read.
Can we please avoid doing that in the future, especially in threads where spoilers are virtually unavoidable? Is it time for MetaFilter to implement spoiler tags in the comments?

Absurd Questions, Hopefully Unabsurd Answers
Instead of continuously derailing the question about questions, we may as well move discussions of said-questions here.
Too much tragedy for one thread
I respectfully suggest that we move the gun control discussion here. If for no other reason than to limit the in-thread argument on whether or not we should be commenting on gun control in-thread.
Good ask metafilter thread that doesn't answer the question? Yes, they exist.
This (Medical Marijuana ask.mefi thread) is a good example of an ask metafilter thread where people don't answer the specific question of the poster, but still remain civil and helpful. Yay. So there's an existence proof that people can be helpful while not answering the question asked (and not fall all over themselves to be jerks).

Deleted AskMe trying to identify a painting via email
Earlier on AskMefi there was a question from "siahny" asking to identify a painting via email. I've got the picture (which is a Word document). The thread seems to be deleted, but should I post it up anyway? She really does want the painting identified...
The two-week waiting period

How about creating including in each user profile a discussion thread, so that we can have a friendly conversation with and about the user whose profile we are viewing?

Discussion area in MeFi Music?
How about a discussion area in MeFi Music for members to set up collaborations? There's a lot of talent among the members, and I think it would be pretty cool to have the opportunity to collaborate with people across the world.
