Idea: the Metafilter link-checker. Take the part of the 'new post' process that double-checks against prior posts, add the part of Mefi that conjures up the related posts, put a link to the feature up on the two lines of links near the logo. [more inside]

I think it was here that I came across a great webpage listing forum trolling techniques that read like an academic listing of informal logic fallacies. It had things like finding errors in small and irrelevant details, ad-hominem attacks, using provocative and loaded terms, shifting claims, concern trolling etc... I've looked for it several times recently and can't find it. Anybody remember the link?

What do I need to do so that links in AskMeFi open in a new page, instead of taking me away from AskMeFi? Links on pages from other sites do.

Within the past few months someone posted a link to either a graph or (an article containing a graph) that showed that GDP calculated within a few months of the time period in question bears no relation (no statistical correlation) to GDP calculated with more complete non-estimated data two years down the line. I would like to find this graph. [more inside]

Very short question. Why does it say 'X new links' when most posts here don't have links? Shouldn't it say 'X new posts or X new flameouts/hugesexismthreads/podcasts'?

I download what I imagine might be legally construed as "copyrighted material" all thie time. But I'm actually upset with this post because I know some people that worked on US v. John Lennon. (Double standard, I know.) So are there any guidelines about posting full-length, copyrighted movies? Is this post this even in good taste? Where's the context? Does it have any intent other than to illegally distribute a movie? Is this even a problem?

So, I was all set to take the survey which is mentioned at AskMe (right-hand side, under the list tags/post block)
"MetaFilter Readers. Support this site and its advertisers by participating in a brief survey: questionmarket.com."Unfortunately, this is the result when clicking on the link: "The website you're looking for cannot be found. The website may no longer exist, or may have moved."
Why no 'link' button in AskMeFi?

NoBiggieCuriosityFilter: I run a t-shirt website, and I've noticed a significant bump in traffic today coming in from this askme post I made a while ago.
While I normally get a few randoms in from MeFi a day, this seems significantly larger then usual, which I can only assume is because someone somewhere else is linking to that ask me question and generating traffic for me second hand. I'm really just curious about it, and am wondering if any of the admins would mind taking a quick look at where they are coming from for me. If not, no Biggie.

This article tells people to check out askmetafilter.com, not ask.metafilter.com. The link goes to AskMeFi though, not askmetafilter.com, which appears to be a shady spam and pop up info site...and I refuse to link to it.

Just a thought about one link posts: Maybe people could save them until they had at least two or three, then posted all at once as say "OneLinkFilter: X, Y, Z" or "YouTubeFilter: X, Y, Z". Others could then emply their one link pile into the comments. Doing this might give the admins more freedom to delete one link posts which were covered as mere comments previously and don't generate much new chat. Other ideas like "YouTube friday" might require too much organisation.

QuickPony: Any chance we can please see the My Profile link bumped up to the top navigation bar, next to My Comments and Favorites? I love the quick-and-dirty account overview, but I don't love the scroll-to-bottom, or click through to main page, click user name action. (Or too much clutter? Discuss.)

This is a bad post. I don't dislike single FPPs, but a single link that points to a single product for sale on the internet, with no extra information or interesting stuff...is not in any way showing the best of the internet. There are hundreds of these for sale from all sorts of companies, and they've been around for a long, long time.
To top it all off, I question that and my post (containing one word: "Spamfilter?") was apparently removed. I can deal with that, but the issue at heart still exists.

Cedar has posted an interesting AskMe question on how to occupy oneself during three months in the stir. But when curious minds eager for details on how he came to such a predicament click on the Homepage URL link in his user profile page, they're greeted with a "Whoa!!" NSFW porn site.
Shouldn't he warn folks on the profile page? Should I or someone warn readers of the AskMe thread? What's the drill on something like this? [And I hate to be paranoid, but could it be possible this is an attempt to drive traffic to said porn site?]

In the comment box, after clicking the link icon (or Ctrl-Shift-A), and pressing the Escape button, it shouldn't insert a "null" link, but just cancel adding the link.

Just a style suggestion for links that include single words with multiple links.
A period ('.'), or a middle dot ('·' ·), or even a spacing cedilla ('¸' ¸) between the links would make it a lot less annoying, especially for those of us with motor control problems. I'm not suggesting this as any sort of rule, just as a nicety.

The "newer" link at the bottom of FPP #19 leads to #24 (Download Abiword) which doesn't exist. The "older" link from #25 also points to #24. Shouldn't #19 link to #25 and vice versa?

Apologies for what is most likely an extremely dumb question, but how do I create links within posted messages without resorting to HTML?
It's been a while since I posted and I remember there used to be a simple user interface to create hyperlinks, but now all I see in the posting area is a plain text-entry box.

Of all the posts I've made, I've yet to figure out how to make posts that don't start with a link, where the main link begins further into the post (example). I once tried opening with a closed-anchor tag, but no luck. What's in the secret sauce?
