@mathowie: "I think RSS is so important that I'd take a job (leaving MeFi) at any startup aiming to make an improved Google Reader (w/ social features). [...] I'm serious, and feel free to email me. MetaFilter can continue with the employees running things."
I think that this maybe merits some serious discussion here, pronto.

Happy 40th birthday,
Matthew. But, what does one get as a 'significant birthday' present for he who separated the light from the darkness, and verily created the blue?

He displayed a graph of his mid-twenties existence, with the bar representing work towering over the one for personal life. Now that he’s 40, the bar heights are reversed. Mathowie, family man/firm rejector of corporate villiany, is featured in
this month's Wired cover story.

On the eve of MetaFilter's twelfth birthday,
the Willamette Week sits down with Matt Haughey to talk about his roots at the dawn of the blogging age, the value of lifestyle work vs. captaining industry, and the future of community blogs in an online landscape increasingly dominated by Twitter, Facebook, and mobile browsing.

"Yeah, yeah. Having a section of the site dedicated to talking about the site I originally designed that just to keep people from jabbering about like fonts that they didn’t like in the middle of a thread about some news event, and just being like shut up, don’t do that; having a place dedicated has been great because then people can talk openly about lots of things."
The July 1st
SitePoint podcast is a panel discussion on "...the profession of Online Community, how it’s grown in importance and profile, and what it means to today’s Web," conducted by
Patrick O'Keefe, founder of the iFroggy Network: with Venessa Paech, Lead Community Manager of
Community Engine; Sarah Hawk, Community Manager of
SitePoint; and our own intrepid
mathowie.

Matt Haughey of Metafilter and his wife Kay split household chores right down the middle, except when it comes to garbage duty. Does the person taking out the trash have "garbage hands" that are only suitable to replace the trash bag and deal with all matters dirty?

I am the MetaFilter pintern (paid intern) Dom, and would love to hear any funny stories the Mefi community has about breaking bones, in order to keep the boss's spirits up while healing from his scaphoid fracture.

"A lot of people obsessed with venture capital see Metafilter as a lifestyle business, but in my mind, it’s a mature business. It works really well and yet nobody aspires to do something like this and I don’t know why. Nobody celebrates just simple businesses that work." -

Since other cities are already posting meetups, I figured I'd better jump on the bandwagon.

While reading the paper this morning I found
this article featuring MeFite #1 decrying the culture of snark. (This is not actually the newspaper I read it in, but it is the only registration-free online version I saw.)

A follow up to this little
post I made a few years ago about a fellow that was attempting to walk every street and lane of his surroundings.
His passing has given me pause to reflect on the idea of community and how posting events from the local to the global bring us closer together. I want to say thank you to mathowie for providing us with this forum for sharing these often unheard stories.

Two months ago, Fearless Leader gave
a neat talk at WebVisions 2008 about how to make money off your particular web passion without resorting to venture capital interference or selling out, and
the slides and the audio (
MP3) from his talk are now online. It's plenty cool enough to watch/listen to on its own merits, if you've ever dreamed of running your own web company or making a small-but-cool web tool -- but since MetaFilter (and what it's been like to start and run MetaFilter) are mentioned prominently, I thought it was worth noting here, rather than on the Blue.

Look who's going to ROFLcon! It's a "a group dissection of internet culture" and "big blowout party" in Cambridge, MA, April 25th and 26th that promoters call "the most important gathering since the fall of the tower of Babel" (and possibly just as productive). Wish
I could be there.
