A Long Bet Pays Off
Cool news from Archive.org:
11 years ago, on the site longbets.org, a friendly wager was made between two mavens of the web: Jeremy Keith and Matthew Haughey. The bet, to be revisited a decade and a year later, would be whether the URL of their wager at Long Bets would survive to a point in the semi-distant future. That is, this day, February 22nd, 2022, (2/22/2222).[more inside]
As of this writing, the URL absolutely has survived.
MeFi 20 Planning Thread
OK! I am having people over to my house in Massachusetts on Saturday, July 13 where we will raise a toast to mathowie and, quite probably, eat a lot of cheese and maybe play some board games. I'll put up an IRL post soonish but this MeTa thread is to nudge people to start thinking about their own "What am I going to do for MeFi's 20th birthday?" planning ideas. First post was July 14, 1999.
It's the $5 noob anniversary!
Fourteen years ago today, Matt started the $5 signups allowing all of us noobs to come in and mess up the place.

Our #1?
Just saw Blood Stripe and noticed that a Matthew Haughey was thanked in the credits.
Stoner podcast: our fearless founder
Uh, I stumbled across this podcast on Stoner: Creative people talk about their experiences with marijuana (and whatever else comes up.) today, titled, Episode 19: Matt Haughey, founder of Metafilter, editorial at Slack.
mathowie transfers ownership of MetaFilter to cortex
Big news: a few days ago Matt Haughey and I signed paperwork to transfer ownership of MetaFilter from him to me. This is sorta huge and sorta not a big deal at the same time: things are fine and basically nothing is changing on the site as a result, we’re just keeping on as before. I’ll talk about the whole thing below the fold. [more inside]
Podcast interview with mathowie on leaving Metafilter
User number 1 talks about leaving Metafilter on the Community Signal podcast. Includes transcript!
Mathowie FTW!
I've seen mathowie pop up in lots of places before, but this one takes the cake.
"You were accidentally put in the bad pile.”
It’s funny. I was at the first XOXO, I give a talk about like “Hell, I don’t know, but it seems like the weather’s changing and this might be the sunset for blogs.” It was a really depressing talk. At the end I was like, “Maybe there will still be opportunities?” but two weeks later I woke up and the site was making half as much money overnight. -- Behind the scenes at Metafilter with former Maximum Leader mathowie.

"The Big Lebowskemoji" from the mind of mathowie
I got a kick out of this and thought it deserved a MetaTalk post: The Big Lebowskemoji, from MetaFilter's own mathowie.

102: Retired
Episode 102 was recorded yesterday and completed moments before we made my retirement post live so things are a little weird and scattered since I didn't know how people would take it yet. It runs about 90min long and covers the month of February on the site. [more inside]
Sixteen Years
After 16 years of doing a bit of everything under the sun here, I’m stepping away from the day to day of running MetaFilter and moving into the background. Never fear, I’m leaving it in the best of hands and things are looking good for the future. [more inside]
Wisdom from No. 1
El Meta
Remember back when the TV series "Heroes" began and many of us thought actor Zachary Quinto resembled our #1, Matt Haughey? Well, I found another celebrity lookalike (albeit certainly older-looking) in Diego Trujillo, who has been cast in a spanish-language version of "Breaking Bad" as "Walter Blanco". At least he does in character, which has him with a lot more head hair and less facial hair than the actor usually has*. Not sure? Well, take a look at the publicity picture that looks like Matt in Walter White's tighty whiteys. Also notable, the title they picked for the show: "METÁSTATIS"**. And here's an english-language promo. [more inside]

We Need a Hero
@mathowie: "I think RSS is so important that I'd take a job (leaving MeFi) at any startup aiming to make an improved Google Reader (w/ social features). [...] I'm serious, and feel free to email me. MetaFilter can continue with the employees running things."
I think that this maybe merits some serious discussion here, pronto. [more inside]

#RWModeration
I am not sure how elusive the Metafilter moderator GUI screenshot might be to the average MeFi user, but I have always wondered about it's efficiency and I was pleasantly surprised when I finally caught a (blurry) glimpse of it during Matt's SxSW 2011 talk: Lessons from 11 Years of Community
Matt Haughey talks about why Facebook is like AOL in the '90s, and the best and worst developments in online communities

Mr Haughey amusingly discusses MetaFilter
An interesting and entertaining interview of MetaFilter user #1 by Colin Marshall. It's a free podcast, an hour in length.
Happy 40th birthday, user #1 (Mathowie)
Happy 40th birthday, Matthew. But, what does one get as a 'significant birthday' present for he who separated the light from the darkness, and verily created the blue? [more inside]
Quelling ones Jobs-like tendencies
He displayed a graph of his mid-twenties existence, with the bar representing work towering over the one for personal life. Now that he’s 40, the bar heights are reversed. Mathowie, family man/firm rejector of corporate villiany, is featured in this month's Wired cover story.
Happy Moderator's Day!

The Blogfather
On the eve of MetaFilter's twelfth birthday, the Willamette Week sits down with Matt Haughey to talk about his roots at the dawn of the blogging age, the value of lifestyle work vs. captaining industry, and the future of community blogs in an online landscape increasingly dominated by Twitter, Facebook, and mobile browsing.
What makes a good community manager?
"Yeah, yeah. Having a section of the site dedicated to talking about the site I originally designed that just to keep people from jabbering about like fonts that they didn’t like in the middle of a thread about some news event, and just being like shut up, don’t do that; having a place dedicated has been great because then people can talk openly about lots of things."The July 1st SitePoint podcast is a panel discussion on "...the profession of Online Community, how it’s grown in importance and profile, and what it means to today’s Web," conducted by Patrick O'Keefe, founder of the iFroggy Network: with Venessa Paech, Lead Community Manager of Community Engine; Sarah Hawk, Community Manager of SitePoint; and our own intrepid mathowie. "Matt says that garbage grossness does not transfer"
Matt Haughey of Metafilter and his wife Kay split household chores right down the middle, except when it comes to garbage duty. Does the person taking out the trash have "garbage hands" that are only suitable to replace the trash bag and deal with all matters dirty? Judge John Hodgman decides!
Sticks and stones did break his bones, but your words may bring him laughter
I am the MetaFilter pintern (paid intern) Dom, and would love to hear any funny stories the Mefi community has about breaking bones, in order to keep the boss's spirits up while healing from his scaphoid fracture. [more inside]

"A lot of people obsessed with venture capital see Metafilter as a lifestyle business, but in my mind, it’s a mature business. It works really well and yet nobody aspires to do something like this and I don’t know why. Nobody celebrates just simple businesses that work." - Interview with Matt Haughey by Sue Medha [via Matt's twitterfeed]

In case there are any Mefites who don't follow mathowie on Twitter, he just sent one out about his health that you should read.
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Matt!
For some reason, I thought he was taller.
Yet another celebrity shout-out to #1. I'm jumping on this bandwagon and renting a recumbent for Halloween.
