We're putting together a new preferences option to toggle off titles on the front page of Mefi specifically, and we'd like some input on wording.

I just noticed that setting the title font-size to zero in my user preferences no longer prevents titles from being displayed with posts.

Is there a way to turn off the giant overwhelming post titles and return to the halcyon days of yore where titles only showed on the post's page?

Episode 77 of the MetaFilter podcast runs about 1hr 40min and was recorded yesterday afternoon with jessamyn and cortex. It features a run-down of our favorite posts from across the sites for January 2013.

Sorry if this is covered in an early titles post, but is there a character length limit on titles? Twice this week I've seen FPPs on the blue that have had their titles (otherwise) unaccountably truncated in mid-word
. This is the first one I noticed, and then this morning
there was this one.
Just curious.

As a compromise over the recent release of titles, we've added the ability to set your title font faces and sizes just like the body and byline fonts/size options on the preferences page.

We're rolling out titles to the front pages of Ask, MetaTalk, and MeFi today (all the other subsites have titles on their front pages). In addition, we've revamped the posting pages on those subsites in order to make the title more obvious and prominent (along with improved helper text).

Perhaps the AskMetafilter question form should point out that the title of the post does not appear on the front page?

What are the all-time longest and shortest post titles? Broken down by subsite, if possible.

What's with the first three tags being included in the title of every AskMe post? For example,
this thread's page title is "My Friend's Lost Story - loststories jealousy forgiveness | Ask MetaFilter".

Would it be a huge inconvenience to actually have Post Titles heading posts on the blue? Yea, I understand the face of the blue is tried and true, however, some, if not all, posts need "Headlines".
Why even have them if they only show up AFTER you check into the post/thread?
(not complaining, I love Mefi!)

PonyFilter: Can we add a preference to remove the post titles from URLs? I occasionally read Metafilter from work. I clicked the
Baby playing with a snake post and had a moment of terror as I viewed the URL.

Even though I previewed three times, I mixed up the tags and titles on
this AskMe After I am tortured and ridiculed, can you please change the to "In Here, Out Over There"?

Recent changes:
1) I finally updated the MetaTalk posting page to be more like the rest of the site, and added titles. RSS will soon have titles added. Also, no more "bugs" category as the generic catch-all, as I force you to pick one.
2) - For firefox 2.0 and IE7 users, you might notice being on a mefi site,
the upper right search box is glowing or highlighted. If you click it, you can add a server-wide MeFi search (using the Google aggregated results from all *.metafilter.com sites) and search directly from your browser.

MeFi link filter: I'm a self-proclaimed newbie and have unsuccessfully tried to answer my question by skimming the FAQs and searching the site.
How do I compose links so that a mouseover displays the title of the link and the related URL, as it does in the following posting?

Reading the blue through RSS is still something of a
guessing game. A while ago there was a useful
discussion about this but nothing's really changed. Please could the
blue be more like the
green?
(in so many ways.)

Why not explain on the AskMe "Post a New Question" page that the Headline/Title will *not* show up on the main page? I have seen lots of questions in the past where the Headline/Title contains the question and the question text lacks context and looks odd on its own.
Example. I think a few clarifying words about how visitors will not see the Headline/Title when browsing AskMe's main pages will help people word their questions more appropriately.

1. Deleted MetaTalk threads still show up in RSS (
example)
2. MetaTalk RSS includes titles for threads, but the actual thread only uses the post number for a title. Discuss.

I've noticed that when posting questions to AskMeFi people will often just copy verbatim the first sentence of their question text into the title field.

How to stop the spread of "_____Filter" in subject headings?
The wiki says (under the heading "inside jokes") that "___Filter" is used to indicate that a topic is so over-discussed as to risk taking over MetaFilter altogether. Examples are IraqFilter and NewsFilter. But current (and increasing) usage seems to be just an effort to be cute: BSDMFilter, CondomFilter, UmbrellaFilter, etc. I, for one, find this annoying and stupid and think it should be discouraged. It's like one of those things that is mildly amusing the first couple of times and thereafter just idiotic. I think that the WhatIsAGoodPost, WhatIsAGoodComment, WhatIsAGoodQuestion entries should be altered to discourage people from this dumb practice.

"Title of Post:
(for RSS and page titles)"
That's what it says next to a key field on the MeFi link submission form. But it's a part of posting that seems not to get the same level of craft and care as the link and body. This is a call (from a recent RSS convert) for more attention to making good titles. [more inside]

Is there any way to add a title tag to AskMe posts? A title would make it much easier and faster to bookmark well-answered posts.

Maybe this was covered and I missed it, but why do individual AskMe threads not have unique titles? When I bookmark a Metafilter thread, it has a unique title but when I bookmark an AskMe thread, I have to change the title.

When I subscribe to the Ask Metafilter
rss feed (using Firefox's Live Bookmark feature) only the title tags show, making the list come up as Question #123523, Question #675745, etc. Could the description tag be copied to the title tag in the RSS feed? Maybe the first 25 characters and then a "..." if necessary? Is there another way of seeing questions using this? Thanks.

How are the blue pop-ups (as in y2karl's posts) made?
I'd like to borrow the idea for a web page. I found the nice title web site, but I'd like to change a few things and I don't know how. The java script looks intimidating. I don't want the URL to be displayed, no transparency, and I'd like rounded corners as seen on MeFi.

You are posting a link without a description, or a description without a link, please correct this The links are included, with brackets and tags, in the description as usual since I joined 2-ish years ago. What are we fishing for here?
You forgot to include a title, please correct this Did no such thing, included the text string "poo969" in the
Link title: field. What are we fishing for here? Have we been studying bondage-and-discipline languages with Bucky Wirth? Just askin'.
PS, Search Metatalk "please correct this" Nothing was found with that search criteria, try searching again.

Hey - if this isn't a new feature, or if I missed a memo, please tell me, but does each thread have it's own title now? I only ask because when I just thought better of posting to the "pancakes" thread and saw "Prattling On About Pancakes" up in the title bar, it startled me a wee bit, and now I see that each thread is similarly titled. New thing?

A while back there was a discussion about the non-informative RSS/RDF/XML feed titles, due to the fact that metafilter/metatalk threads don't have 'titles' as such. Could we perhaps have a an extra field in the 'post an FPP' form marked 'Post title' or something that was less than some arbitrary limit of characters long and could be used for things like the feeds, and more importantly (and the reason I'm requesting this) for page titles.
I tend to open all the links I want to read in one go. When I click on the "(
n new)" link I don't go to the top of the story, and so when I get to the page after reading other FPPs, I don't know what this story's about anymore, and can't glance at the document title for a hint of the general subject as with many sites.

I have recently noticed that when I put my cursor on some links, like the one
here, after a second or two I get a balloon briefly describing the link. Since I am an HTML novice I figure this is an added tag that I do not know. Can someone fill me in?

Just a small thing. I've a section in my favourites for Mefi threads I'm following so that I can consult them easily later. Is this just me? Anyway, whenever they appear there, they are listed as 'Metafilter Comments on [insert number]'. How easy would it be to have something more identifiable so I don't have to remember the thread number (for example those little post summaries which appear on the top of the posting boxes)?
