“I mean, old school web people definitely have opinions...”
From the Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure at UMass Amherst: “MetaFilter turns 25 this month, a shining beacon of the Good Web. Reluctant owner Jessamyn West tells us how rusty tech and vibrant community keeps it vital.” [Elsewhere: MetaFilter: a time capsule from another internet]

MeFi24 in 2023
Today is MetaFilter’s 24th anniversary. To put things in perspective, this invaluable source of knowledge, conversations and learning was founded the same year the Euro launched, boy bands were on the rise, the first Matrix movie was released, and "Believe" by Cher was hitting the top of the Billboard Year-End chart. We'd like to celebrate this milestone by raising a virtual toast to the countless discussions, friendships, and shared knowledge that have blossomed here. [more inside]
Best of the Web anniversaries and transcripts
1. The first podcast episode was posted on February 16, 2007! Happy 16th anniversary / birthday to the podcast!
2. I just finished running the last / first episode through otter.ai for an automated transcript, so *every* episode now has a transcript! So. Many. Transcripts.
3. I joined two days after that first episode!
Just, you know. Woot!

Two decades in the blue
May 22nd is my metafilter 20 year anniversary. I can remember signing up from my little cinder block office in graduate school at the University of Louisville. I thought I'd post now so I don't forget. It's kind of amazing that this community still exists, and wanted to thank everyone for their contributions. Since joining Metafilter I've finished grad school, had three more kids, gotten a full time job and of course gotten older. Thanks all for your many links, comments and useful solutions over the years.
20 Years on Metafilter

Ten Years on Metafilter!
Posting for ellieBOA: Ten years ago today, I finally joined MeFi after reading it for a while before, after seeing AskMe linked on Lifehacker. This site is one of my favourite places on the internet, and the online and offline friends I've made here are awesome. Thank you all for everything you put into this site, my life would be so different without it. [more inside]
MetaAnniversary: FizzRecordings? nightFizz?
On this exact date, one year ago, I messaged Nightrecordings via MeMail to discuss this post about Serena Williams at the US Open. One thing led to another and...we're now married. I wouldn't have the love of my life without this community. I want to thank everyone here who made that possible. Apologies for the selfishness of this MetaTalk. I love you Nightrecordings! ❤️
Happy 20th Anniversary, MetaFilter
MetaFilter, that weird blue site (and, yep, we've finally turned it blue again), is 20 years old today.
It's a thrilling and boggling and remarkable and ungainly and heartening number. I've had trouble figuring out what the thing is that I want to say about the site today, and I've realized the problem is there's no one thing. MetaFilter is too complex, its history too complicated, to reduce to a tidy anecdote.
But I want to talk a little about what it means to me, and what I want it to aspire to, and to reflect a little bit on this twenty year milestone on an unsteady world wide web. [more inside]

MeFi 20 Planning Thread
OK! I am having people over to my house in Massachusetts on Saturday, July 13 where we will raise a toast to mathowie and, quite probably, eat a lot of cheese and maybe play some board games. I'll put up an IRL post soonish but this MeTa thread is to nudge people to start thinking about their own "What am I going to do for MeFi's 20th birthday?" planning ideas. First post was July 14, 1999.
Thank you, Metafilter
Today is my 14th anniversary of ponying up $5. Since then, I've moved to my fourth continent. Thank you for the longest running stable relationship I've had since 2005, Metafilter. Tell me about being alone in some challengingly new environment (like a rural African village, ha!) and how being able to access Metafilter made all the difference for you.
We're Still Here
So, 10 Years Ago...
...Kattullus gave me a membership as a Yule gift, apparently out of grave doubts that I would never get around to it on my own. This is my 10th Longest Night of the Year with all of you, and I just wanted to say thanks for all the posts, comments, retorts, favorites, flags, mod deletions, card clubs, meet ups, memails, and general hijinx. You’ve made my life richer.
History in Real Time (plus a century)
Four and a half years ago, doctornemo posted The shots heard round the world., a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the assassination that would plunge Europe into World War I. Yesterday, doctornemo posted “It is 11 o’clock and the war is—”, a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the ceasefire that ended World War I. [more inside]
Metafilter's 20th: Any Plans
If my math is correct Metafilter will be 20 next year. This seems like something that may take a year to plan. Are there any plans? Anyone planning on making plans? What's the plan for plans?

Happy 10 Years! This is me saying thank you for dealing with my idiosyncrasies. My video-game obsessed posts, my overly polite Canadian need to apologize. I want to say thank you to all the moderators, developers, members, lurkers, friends & acquaintances, the entire community. You make living online worthwhile. This place truly is 'Best of the Web'. Here's hoping for 10 more! Cheers.

Looking back on ten years of FPPs
I've joined many web communities in my life, but none for as long or as wholeheartedly as MetaFilter. I've learned a lot, grown as a person, and taken direction from the thousands of smart, funny, and caring people who write here. And I've been inspired to write, too, putting more time and effort into researching worthwhile posts than I have at any other creative hobby. Sadly, what with work and the news chaos and competing interests it feels like there's less and less time to focus lately, and seeing linkrot erode what I do post is a drag. So when showbiz_liz's lovely celebration of ten years on the blue made me realize my own 10th Mefiversary was approaching, I was moved to do something about it. Nothing on the web lasts forever, but armed with old notes files, the Wayback Machine, and a drive to rediscover my own personal Best of the Web, I plowed through all 149 posts (and a few comments) to recover lost links, check on what had happened since, and organize it all into a single FPP omnibus for your reading pleasure. A ten year update... and an SF meet-up.
Nearly 10 years ago, I commented on the green about having fallen head-over-heels for a woman only once, back in college - but how, after 13 years of wondering if I'd ever have that feeling again, we ended up moving in together, had just gotten married, and all was right in the world.
weapons-grade pandemonium issued a challenge just three minutes later:
Update us in ten years, eschatfische.
And so we will! gucky and I are pleased to invite Bay Area MeFites to our 10 year anniversary party, featuring a 35mm matinee of When Harry Met Sally, September 10th at 1pm at the Roxie. RSVP information inside. [more inside]

MeFi helped me through the darkness.
Five years ago today I lost my wife suddenly and unexpectedly.
MeFites came out of the woodwork with words of support, hugs, shipments of books, postcards, notes, and even pie!
I got advice from others who had been through similar tragedies; new friends and penpals; all together, it was an awesome show of love and caring. I made it through the darkness, and since then have also been able to help others who have had the same thing happen to them.
I just want to say thanks, again, to everyone. If this seems disjointed, it's because I can't find the right words to express how I feel.

I can't believe it's been five years.
Nine Years
Happy ninth anniversary to the flood of "$5.00 noobs" who streamed onto MetaFilter when the gate was opened.

Ten Years Gone
I meant to do this yesterday, but thanks for ten years MeFites. You people are fuckin jake by me.
As Balzac said, 'There goes another novel.'”
Last year, cortex went out of his way to quantify our participation on MetaFilter. I asked if he'd be willing to do it again, and he agreed. So if you want to know how many words you've typed into MetaFilter instead of that dissertation/novel/revolutionary manifesto, now is the time and here is the place.
