Seeing this response by the original poster made me recall this little pony request. The poor little thing has been left outside in the rain for a fortnight. [more inside]
The Givewell Board of Directors have issued a statement concerning the changes they made in the wake of the astroturfing and related activities earlier in the week. [more inside]
The Keynote Index Fund. In which Matt asks "Is it possible to make money off the Apple keynote talks given by Steve Jobs?".
A follow up on this post. I saw there were a few members that had sailed on SS France / SS Norway / SS Blue Lady and thought they might want to grab a souvenir. [more inside]
Can we get an update?
Now that Halloween is almost here, and Fall is at its median, I thought it might be an auspicious time to start committing to the Whistler Mefi ski trip proposed in these threads. The tentative date is for the weekend of December 15-16. Are you planning on going? State your plans on the Wiki! [more inside]
Photos from the (very enjoyable) Shoreline meetup.
The great AskMe folllowup roundup -- sort of a pony, sort of a good idea. People, if you have posted an AskMe in the last year or so (meaning it is still live) and you found the answers helpful, and something happened as a result of the AskMe, many people are curious to know what the end result is. Going back, marking best answers if you haven't done so, and telling us what the heck ended up happening would all be much appreciated. [more inside]
Update on this thread - defence calls in spin doctor in an attempt to humanise nappy-wearing astronaut.
Notes on the 30th anniversary of the death of Marc Bolan.... [more inside]
Update: back in this post on the podcast version of the radio series Moon Over Morocco a few people expressed disappointment that ZBS wasn't giving away the earlier and better known series The Fourth Tower of Inverness. Well, now they are.
No leaky fishtank mystery, but similar. Following up on this AskMe of mine. I have egg on my face.
Feature request: Some visual way to easily tell where the original poster has posted a follow-up comment. Often in reading an Ask MeFi question, I have to scroll back up and down a few times to get the name of the original poster and then do a search to see if they posted a follow-up. Perhaps a different color for the original poster? It works well for comments marked "best answer". (Oh - and a pony)
Just wanted to give massive shout-outs to everybody at MeFi who have patiently answered many of my questions about moving from the US to Canada. I'm a week away from that move, way nervous, but infinitely better prepared due to your valuable feedback. Thank you!
UPDATE: My SO with the aneurysm survived brain surgery. I didn't know if this was appropriate to post here, but the askme response was so comforting. It was the middle of the night and I felt really alone. Now she's home, having survived a craniotomy, and doing great. So, it's late at night again and I'm awake and she's asleep with her giant Frankenstein scar and I wanted to say thank you.
UpdateFilter: while I was waiting in line for an iPhone with my friend yesterday (for him not for me) I was catching up on a little work. I was showing my friend the MeFi admin interface and someone looked over my shoulder and said "is that MetaFilter?" I said yes, was he a member? He said no but a video that he had made got linked on MeFi last February and had catapulted him to mini-stardom for a few weeks. He gave me some backstory on the movie....
Did someone already post the follow up to the post about the guy with the disfiguring growths on his hands? If so, I missed it.
A few weeks ago, I posted a question about our mountains of returnable bottles. Just thought I'd mention the outcome...two days after my post, we found a flyer attached to our doorknob. The local high school was collecting returnables as part of a fund-raiser for a student whose house had burned down. We hauled our many (many!) bags of bottles out to the curb as directed. We weren't there when they were collected, but a few days later our next-door neighbor caught me outside and mentioned that he'd been present when the kids came around to collect the bottles, and one of them yelled "Hey, jackpot!" to the others when they hit our curb. No particular point of this post, I guess, other than it was somewhat serendipitous timing that I had all our bottles bagged and had just posed the question as to what the heck to do with them.
Last August, I asked Metafilter about launching model rockets with my young son. I received lots of encouragement and some good advice. This past weekend, we finally launched our first rockets (photos, short video) and I wanted to say thanks.
Following up on this post from January, the Washington hospital which performed the "Ashley Treatment" has acknowledged that it broke the law.
Followup on Canadian spy coins. Today, an Associate Press FOIA request reveals that they were just the commemorative quarters we thought.
There's a thread in AskMefi that may be a candidate for deletion or at least expunging identifying info. It includes personal info of third parties and asks if a business is a "scam" with no evidence/logic. And after this inflammatory claim there is no follow-up by the OP.
Wish we had a follow-up on this thread — guy sounded like a psycho (as you might imagine from my response). The user apparently hasn't posted since then.
For fans of the Laughing Song thread, there's a mention of George W. Johnson as well as other early African-American recording artists over at NPR's The Story. Photos and song samples there, too. I'd include a permanent link to the actual topic, but have so far not found one.
In June last year, Anjumu posted a link to a New Yorker article about the aggressive copyright enforcement followed by the James Joyce estate. A Joycean academic sued the estate for the right to publish certain material. They won. (see also Lessig)
would it be too newsfilter / doublepost to link the closing arguments in the scooter libby trial? the previous post three weeks ago was pretty generic, and the commenters in the thread are right that it was almost impossible to follow what was going on (and i say this as a law student who's fascinated by these things). today, however, was some grand drama, with the defense breaking down into tears, and Fitzgerald going after not just Scooter but Elmer Fudd himself with both barrels. this is stuff that's actually accessible to the general public, but i hate crowding the blue. (grey, i got no problem with, apparently...) thoughts?
This recent AskMe Question about being a bone marrow transplant donor is very inspiring (Matty's marrow is apparently going to help a one year old child), and has sparked a bunch of people (me included) to sign up on-line to be a marrow donor. MeFi has a wide reach - can this maybe get a sidebar or some extra attention in hopes that more MeFi readers (especially those of non-white heritage) might sign up?
So Little Mosque on the Prairie debuted tonite (and last). Any comments, concerns?
There was a bit of a brou-ha-ha regarding it.

First batch of DC/Baltimore meetup photos. Nice folks, cold beer, snackity food, and for a double bonus the Terps whiiped Purdue and Saddam got the dirt sandwich.
Has an anonymous asker ever outed themselves on purpose? Some questions (like, say this one, or any one of a hundred questions about looking for a new job) seem like after some future event, a non-anonymous followup would not be out of place. Has it ever happened? Even once? Anyone want to do it now?
Okay, I posted a few weeks ago about using lastfm to track my stolen computer, and was asked to update when they responded...
Another batch of pics from the London Meetup on Friday added to the pool and Illy document for make-your-own-meetup-sign fun.
Photos from tonight's London meetup at the Bricklayer's Arms, taken by a variety of participants. It was a fantastic night.
Good news, American MeFites concerned about identity theft! You no longer have to show ID in order to acquire pancakes.
I get very annoyed when people post anonymously on ask.mefi and then the answers ask follow up questions which compel the poster to revise their question, but they can't post because they would no longer be anonymous. Is this just me? Could there be a warning after the question saying the poster can no longer post on this thread? or maybe there is some way to allow the poster to continue to post anonymously?
Photos from tonight's Cambridge meetup. no captions yet A huge thank you to grouse for making this meetup happen.
To follow up the intense mystery of this AskMe, a resolution at last. Well. Um, see for yourself [flash]. from here
Photos from the Chicago Meetup last night.
Today I get interviewed by a lawyer about this post. Not specifically about that incident, but as supporting evidence to try and get the store in question to settle a different court case. The lawyer has told me that the security department has already admitted to criminal behaviour. Considering that this event occured at least 5 years before I made that post, I've already expressed how little I remember. I expect to say "I don't remember" a lot. I just bring this up as a reminder that people outside this board can and will read whatever you post (remember our own shoplifting community?).
Dude's girlfriend tells him she was raped, and names the attacker. Dude flies into rage, goes and kills the man, and buries the body off in the woods somewhere. Girlfriend was lying. Apropos of the AskMe from a couple days back.
Followup on the Funky Little Project, now officially titled the Black Book Art Circle Project. The first 5 are mailed out, I've got 9 more coming, either to mail out or to hand out if they arrive before the Vancouver meet. After that, I think no more books. Cost of books + cost of postage is more than I budgeted for. If you are interested in the project and want to receive a book, please try and request one from the recipients who've just got one or will get one (I'll post who they are when I send them). 15 books out, hopefully I get 15 back!
This is the official thread to link to VEGAS MEETUP photos. Post 'em if you got 'em, kids.
Pictures from the Sydney MeFi Meet-up at the Alfred Hotel Pub in Camperdown..., in case you were curious.
