Call in show: tell us a joke!
As suggested recently in another post: we're doing an community-participation call-in show for the April podcast, and we want to hear your favorite jokes! Call our voicemail box at (505) 663-6334 and rattle something off for us, and I'll edit it all together. (Or you can email me an audio recording! Or you can send us the text of a joke you like if you'd rather a moderator record it!) I'd like to get this edited before the 1st, so calling/writing/sending sooner is better than later. 138: Don't Leave Me Hanging
It's a magical low-energy podcast! Okay, it's not especially magical. But it's me and Jessamyn and we talk about MeFi and shaking fists at kids and the Olympics and sundry other things. Recorded on Monday the 26th, it runs about 75 minutes. [more inside]
137: It Descended Into Butts
This episode, jessamyn and I catch up on the last month and change of MetaFilter, discuss books and the reading-or-not thereof, and workshop the title of this podcast episode briefly. Recorded Tuesday February 6th, it covers January and bits and pieces of December while we're at it, and runs about 75 minutes. [more inside]
136: 2017 year-end call-in show
It's the call-in show! Jessamyn and a very sleepy moi chatter for a bit about site and life stuff in haphazard fashion, interspersed with a couple long strings of calls from a bunch of lovely and occasionaly slightly cheeky MeFites. It was a lot of fun and a minor pain in the ass to put together, and runs about 80 minutes total. [more inside]
Another end of year call-in show!
Hey all you wonderful MetaFilter folks! Last year I asked y'all to call in on our Google Voice mailbox and leave a message, and a bunch of you did, and it made a really nice podcast. So we're gonna do it again!
Call (505) 663-6334. That's (505) 663-MEFI. Just say who you are and share a quick thought—maybe a good thing from this weird year, or something you're looking forward to next year, or something you liked or appreciated on MetaFilter in 2017. Or a (short) poem, or a (short) song, or a (short, is this theme becoming clear) joke! [more inside]

135: It's A Dang Podcast
It's me! It's Jessamyn! It's a damn-the-torpedoes, full-amble-ahead ramshackle of an episode as we catch up on MetaFilter, talk a bit about the recent US politics discussion changes, and just recklessly chat about this and that while I enjoy a nice big glass of wine. Covers November and runs about 80 minutes. [more inside]
134: Stuff and Things
Hey, it's me and Jessamyn chattering about MetaFilter and Halloween and more MetaFilter and large burdensome televisions and even more MetaFilter. This episode covers the month of October and runs about an hour and a half. [more inside]
133: Eggs On Your Pegboard
Jessamyn and I catch up on Canada trips and broken feet, and my idiolectical idiosyncrasies get dragged out of the bag again, along with a bunch of good MetaFilter stuff, in this podcast episode recorded Friday September 29th. It runs about 80 minutes total. [more inside]
132: During Pre-Roll We Talked About The Dacia
This episode of Best of the Web, Jessamyn and I chat about MetaFilter in August, and camping, and Jess filling in, and a whole dang bunch of MetaFiltery things, as is our wont. Recorded September 1st, it runs about 90 minutes. [more inside]
131: Today. Server Time.
Jessamyn and I carve out about 80 minutes to talk about MetaFilter and our respective weird busy months, including side threads on having too many dictionaries, what exactly qualifies as the greater Boston area, and questions about bathroom stuff. We cover pretty much all of July. Also, hey, we had a best post contest last month! [more inside]
130: ...And Special Guest Star Robocop Is Bleeding
Hey, who's that on this month's podcast? It's long-time MeFite and all around good fellow robocop is bleeding, who joins me and Jessamyn to talk about making art, living in Salem, MA, and a bunch of MetaFiltery stuff. This episode covers the month of June more or less and runs about 95 minutes. [more inside]
129: We're Blaming Everything On Pancakes
In this episode of the MetaFilter podcast, Jessamyn and I dig in on a May's-worth of MetaFilter, more or less, and also discuss the upsides and downsides of having pancakes for breakfast and whether me having done so ruined everything. This one runs about 85 minutes. [more inside]
128: DUMPIN' M' BEEF with Jess and Josh
This episode is short, late, and out of control! Things have been busy, so Jessamyn and I finally snuck in a quick hour to record and said to hell with the usual structure, let's just mention a few things we like. Runs a bit under an hour total. [more inside]
127: I Have No Tabs And I Must Stream
Jessamyn I are back in normal podcast business, making up for lost time after last month's Ask A Moderator show by trying to recap two months of MetaFilter despite neither of us having the time to prepare. The result: a goofy biggun at an hour and forty five minutes, covering as much as we can from February 8th through April 3rd. [more inside]
126: Ask A Moderator
In a big break in format, Jessamyn and I spend the entire show doing nothing but answering your questions! For over two hours; it's an epic. Featuring few bonus voicemail answers from Eyebrows McGee and write-ins from other mods on a couple things. Thanks everybody for calling in, that was a lot of fun! [more inside]
call-in show: Ask A Moderator
For the next podcast episode, I think it'd be fun to do another call-in show. This time: Ask A Moderator! Drop us a voicemail at (505) 663-6334, that's (505) 663-MEFI, with a question about MetaFilter, moderation, being a mod, or whatever, and we'll try and give you an answer! [more inside]
125: It's Been A Weird, Weird Time
This episode of Best of the Web, jessamyn and I catch up on the last month-ish on MetaFilter, and I mostly manage not to lapse into grumpy ranting about the state of the world, mostly. Also, we get voicemail from Greg_Ace, Wordshore, wenestvedt, and a mystery caller with an update re: bananas. This episode covers January 3rd through February 7th and runs about 90 minutes. [more inside]
124: Happy New Year Call-In Show
It's a new year, and good riddance to the old; jessamyn and I do a shorter-than-usual version of our usual MeFi roundup podcast chatter, but the real star of this episode is the dozens of MeFites who called in to the podcast voicemail with greetings, memories of 2016, wishes for 2017, quotes, songs, baby and pet noises, and more. The episode alternates between chatter and strings of voicemail; it covers December 1st through January 2nd and runs about 90 minutes total. [more inside]
Something nice at the end of 2016: you!
It's a call-in show! I'm gonna run voicemails from MeFites as part of the next podcast, so give us a call at (505) 663-6334. That's (505) 663-MEFI. Just say who you are and share a quick thought—maybe one good thing from 2016, or something you're looking forward to in 2017, or something you liked on MeFi, or even a New Years resolution if that's your sorta thing. [more inside]
123: NOT ME THAT DAY
We're podcastin' through the pain: me and jessamyn chat about MeFi, vent a little about the election, and talk about stuff like dealing with art vs. concrete activism and how people can't agree on which way to face in the goddam shower. This episode covers November 2nd through November 30th and runs about 90 minutes. [more inside]
122: Your Dumb Early Feet
It's November 1st, do you know where your podcast is? It's, uh. It's right here. This episode covers Oct 5th through Nov 1st and runs just about 80 minutes. [more inside]
121: The Gold Medal For Restraint

120: Hard Out There For A Nerd
Coming down the pipe a little late because summer scheduling is complicated, Jessamyn and I catch up on MetaFilter, MeFites getting married, MeFites going camping, MeFites arguing about stuff, and all the other things the doldrums of August bring with. This episode is about an hour and forty minutes and covers August 4th through September 7th. [more inside]
119: We're Very Helpful You're Here
Jessamyn and I take a break from house guests and election madness, respectively, to chatter about great stuff on MetaFilter from July 2nd through August 4th. We also take a super quick guided meditation break in the middle! We both ate our figurative Wheaties; this episode comes in at a fulsome hour and fifty-two-ish minutes. [more inside]
118: We Should Have Asked a Chemist
Rolling up on a long weekend, Jessamyn and I make a long story very slightly less long with this comparatively restrained 90 minute discussion of the last month of MeFi, covering June 3 through July 1. [more inside]
117: Voting For Anarchy
This episode is jessamyn, me, and a collective inability to stay focused, as we discuss hiring frimble, choosing usernames, beverage routines, hidden double-reverse-sexism in Wikipedia charts, how to hand change to a customer, and also some stuff about MetaFilter. This episode covers May 3 through June 2 and runs just under two hours. [more inside]
116: Escape from Pony Island, with pb
This episode starts with a chat with departing tech wizard pb, talking about his time on MeFi, blogospheric history, and the wikipedia pages of Nebraskan high schools. After that, jessamyn and I get into our usual what's-neat-on-mefi routine. This episode covers April 8 through May 2 and is just a hair under two hours. [more inside]
115: Boaty McBoatface, with barchan
Coasting in fashionably late, it's Ep #115 of Best Of The Web, wherein jessamyn and I chat with the geologirrific barchan about dunes, oil rigs, industrial accidents, her dog who also makes a couple cameos, and all kinds of MetaFiltery stuff. This show covers March 3 through April 7 and runs for just under two hours. [more inside]
114: I Say It's Spinach, And To Hell With It

113: It's Been A Deluge, with griphus
This month, me and Jess are kibitzing with the charming griphus, who is almost certainly the first podcast guest ever to not have his account active at the time, but don't worry: he's just resting up for a late entry into the US presidential race. We chatter for about an hour and forty five minutes, covering everything from January 5th to February 2nd. [more inside]
112: FUCK ALL THE REST OF THE LETTERS
For the first time in either the history of the Best of the Web podcast or maybe just the year 2016, we're going all out with four people on the podcast! Four J's, even: joining me and Jessamyn are long-time MeFites not_on_display (Jim!) and churl (Jesse!), as we talk about the month in MeFi, the Best Post contest, and the dark Jungian substrate that lies beneath the fragile shared fiction we call "reality". Also some bathroom stuff. With all this personality bopping around, we're ringing in the new year with a hefty 2 hours of show this time, covering December 1st through January 4th. [more inside]
111: It's Too Late To Play The Accordion
This month on Best Of The Web, our special guest is each other, as Jessamyn and I pull a dynamic duo all by our collective lonesomes for once. Recorded earlier today, this episode runs about an hour and three quarters and covers November 2nd through December 1st. [more inside]
110: Stealin' Lincoln, with Eyebrows McGee
It's a short podcast! By our standards, which is to say only an hour and twenty minutes or so. Jessamyn and I are joined by the midwest's own Eyebrows McGee as we chatter semi-hurriedly about a bunch of stuff from Metafilter and also Abe Lincoln's corpse. We cover October 8th-ish through November 2. [more inside]
109: Rhymes With Picard, feat. Greg Nog
For this episode, Jessamyn and I are joined by none other than Greg Nog, who chats about cats and puppets and moving from one city with "louis" in the name to another, plus lots of great MetaFilter stuff. We cover September 9th through October 8th, all in a shockingly lean hour and three quarters. [more inside]
Out of the Blue, episode #2: On emotional labor, with Jess Zimmerman
On July 13th, the writer Jess Zimmerman posted “Where’s My Cut?”: On Unpaid Emotional Labor on The Toast, an essay about how and why emotional work is often undervalued and treated as "women's work". Or, more to the point, not even work: just something women are inherently supposed to do. It's a good piece, and what it spawned was even more interesting: a huge, revelatory MetaFilter thread in which site members, women in particular, talked about all the ways this asymmetry and devaluation of emotional labor has affected their lives and their relationships. [more inside]

[more inside]
Out of the Blue, episode #1: The Snail That Wouldn’t Die
In 1846, a dead snail was glued to a specimen card in the British Museum. In 1850, somebody realized that the snail…wasn’t so dead after all, kicking off a curious story of molluskular stoicism that charmed the mid 19th C. science-and-nature circuit. But what went on in the ensuing 150 years? Site user "nicebookrack" wanted to know, and posted question to Ask MetaFilter asking, well, whatever happened to the snail that wouldn’t die? [more inside]
106: I Cleaned Out The Bathroom Closet
It's episode 106 of the Metafilter podcast, with me and jessamyn and mathowie. It's episode 61 of the podcast! We chat with new weekend moderator restless_nomad for twenty minutes or so up front, about moderation and video games and green vegetables; and then we ramble on for about a normal podcast's worth of chatter after that, so this comes in at a beefy 90 minutes or so. [more inside]
