For some Mefites it's Thanksgiving today, which can mean travel and family etc (or not). For everyone else it's just midweek. So here's an open chit-chat thread where we can celebrate what we're thankful for, or take refuge and gripe about traffic and family, or alternatively, celebrate its not being a holiday and gripe about regular midweek nonholiday stuff. I really like the word "blustery", do you have a word you like?
Word is that Joel Hodgson is doing another Turkey Day stream of classic MST3K episodes on Thanksgiving this year, starting at noon Eastern time, both through YouTube and their new 24 hour Twitch stream! The stream already shows MST3K all the time, but watching it for Thanksgiving is like a tradition, a tradition that we in MST Club believe strongly, so we watch the whole marathon in our video room each year, as kind of a preliminary for the big Christmas Marathon. Come join us!
[This is a general appreciation post and maybe those are not cool for MetaTalk anymore but I generally appreciate you so I am trying it.] chesty_a_arthur wrote an AskMe question this morning about a commonly-repeated but factually-unclear legal point: do mothers get legal preference in U.S. child custody cases? Within 4 hours, there are 7 substantive answers, with links to 6 general articles and 4 scholarly papers that are on-point. [more inside]
It's Thanksgiving in America, a day to give thanks, spend time with family, friends, & loved ones and share a warm meal. 2018 has not always been the most easy of years to live through, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share thanks, to acknowledge that we made it another year on this planet, that we did it together. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, my partner, and all of you. I'm thankful that MetaFilter exists. Cheers.
What we've done the past couple of years is set up the MST Club video sharing room (at https://cytu.be/r/Metafilter_MST3KClub) and embed Shout Factory's official stream of the event there, so we can watch it with other MeFi members and our own chatroom instead of the rapidly-scrolling chat of Twitch/Youtube MSTies. We plan on doing that this year too, BUT NOTE, the official event is this Sunday, November 18th, not on Thanksgiving Day like years past! AND it looks like it's going to consist of ALL OF NEW SEASON 12! For more, look inside.... [more inside]
It's Thanktoberfest! If you need a refresher, that's a holiday that, like actual Oktoberfest, has only the loosest relation to October. Thanktoberfest runs from Canadian Thanksgiving through American Thanksgiving, and we encourage you to focus on things you're thankful for. People have been making a ton of awesome posts about things I'm very thankful exist in the world! Share your favorites and thank your fellow mefites within! [more inside]
Happy Thanktoberfest! What's Thanktoberfest? It's a holiday that, like actual Oktoberfest, has only the loosest relation to October. Thanktoberfest runs from Canadian Thanksgiving through American Thanksgiving, and we encourage you to focus on things you're thankful for -- making posts about awesome things you're grateful exist, thanking other mefites for their awesomeness, and just generally spreading good vibes and gratitude all around the site. Tag your posts thanktoberfest and we'll have some thankfulness metatalks and at the end of Thanktoberfest we'll have a big thanking post where we all thank each other for our favorite Thanktoberfest posts!
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! Tonight's topic: What are you thankful for? Big or small, silly or serious, share the things you're thankful for this year.
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! Now that Halloween is over, I am ready to GET HYPE for the winter holidays, and with the SUPER-INTENSE SNOWSTORM we had on Friday that made it impossible to drive, but only for an hour, I think the universe is telling me it's time to talk turkey. (And trees and menorahs and festivus poles and kinaras and champagne and red envelopes and logs and orbital mechanics and any other holiday accoutrements that may be common to your culture, family, or religion!) So what is up for the next couple months, what are you looking forward to, what are you making cunning plans to avoid, tell us everything holiday.
The 99th(!!!) podcast was recorded earlier today and runs about 1h45m as we cover November on MeFi, Thanksgiving fun, and other upcoming events. [more inside]
American Thanksgiving is tomorrow, so I thought this would be a good time to (turkey!) trot out some thanking and maybe even some giving. [more inside]
This podcast covers the tail end of October as well as November. We sort of steered clear of anything from December for the next podcast that will recap the Awesome Post Contest. This one was run high and tight, only at an hour and with no edits during the time we talked. [more inside]
thanks, mathowie, mods, and netizens of metafilter. [more inside]
Reminder to Americans: Not all MeFites live in your country, hence any references to “Thanksgiving” will be meaningless (or, for Canadians, will have arrived a month late). [more inside]
This is a callout. I accuse each and every one of you of being awesome. [more inside]
Episode 35 of the MetaFilter Podcast features all three mods talking about the last couple weeks on MetaFilter. It was recorded on December 3rd and after an unfortunate delay, it's finally up. There's a lot of music discussed and sampled and it runs a little more than an hour total. [more inside]
Happy Thanksgiving, Metafilter. [more inside]
Last-minute Mini-Meetup: Any Bay Area MeFites looking for something to do tomorrow (meaning Thanksgiving)? Me too! Movies or games or food or beer or all of the above are among my ideas. Whaddayasay?
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. Here's wishing you and your families peace of mind, peace of heart, and generosity of spirit.
Portland, OR MeFites: Far from home this Thanksgiving? Us too. Please attend our Orphan's Thanksgiving dinner/short film festival! [more inside]
What gives with all these turkey-related posts? Reminds me of elephant day...
Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for the MetaCommunity, the ideas, the humor, the fun. Oh yeah.
