Our 60th podcast starts off with some amazing calls from MeFites in Japan. It ends on a slightly heavy note and we didn't have the calls recorded before we recorded our podcast, so you'll have to excuse the mods for not commenting on the calls (because they were an unknown at the time) and generally being jokey just after some Heavy Shit. Anyhoo, this contains recaps from SXSW and the best parts of the site during the month of March. It runs 1hr 15min long or so

what happened to Rory Marinich? I don't want to open any wounds or cause any trouble but he was one of my favorite users. I can't see anything in his post history that indicates why he's not longer here. Just wondering what happened.

So is this a place where no one types 'first' comments, or do you guys just delete them with a vengeance before anyone sees them?

I would like to request that theological/religious threads (such as this
this one) be allowed to be a discussion on a specific religious topic (in this case, hell and the afterlife) and not be turned into a referendum on the nature of belief.

Just a reminder I'm sure we've had before, but I guess we need a refresher. Whether you like the show or not, have some consideration for others & don't give out spoilers like candy. I gave up on
this thread after reading two comments containing the same spoiler.

MeFites in Japan, we want to hear from you on the next podcast! After the devastating earthquake just a couple weeks ago, we've all worried about our members in Japan and it was great to see check-ins that things were mostly ok. We'd like to hear from mefites in Japan for the next podcast: call my new Skype Japanese number at (050) 5806-3941 and leave us up to a 90 second message letting everyone know what the quake was like, what the aftermath was like, and how the rebuilding it going. I know 90sec is short, so if you'd like to leave a longer story/message, you can always record a mp3 at home and just send us a link to download it on the contact form. Thanks!

In-page youtube videos only will play the first one I watched. Refreshing or returning lets me play other videos, but after that, it still only lets me play the first one of that session. I'm using google chrome. (

I love AskMefi for all that it is, but I often get bogged down in things that don't interest me. I'm in Engineering by trade and often times I run into very specific areas of knowledge that either I know or someone else is an expert in. I'd like to make a list of these.

The 'fantastic' flag: I know it's been called "outdated", and people have asked for it to be removed. Who cares about that! I would really like to know how many people use it, how it is used, and how the mods react to it being used.

I love Metafilter and the site continues to get more awesome, especially with the addition of the feature that shows the number of recent new and as yet invisible comments. I love Metafilter even when mods occasionally reject my questions as inappropriate. Thanks to all the admins; you're doing a great job. That is all.

Is something wrong with Metafilter's DNS, or is it my ISP? I'm able to access the subdomains of MeFi at the moment, but going to www.metafilter.com gives me a DNS error.

Can i use Metafilter Projects to post websites and projects by my siblings? I know they'd count as self-links on the Blue, but I was wondering if they'd be okay on projects.

So the new show-new-comments feature is awesome! Except... when I load new comments and then hit the back button, it goes back to the post without the new comments, instead of back to (for example) the main page that I navigated from.

[comments removed - that's **IT** This thread is not a referendum of one crabby person's opinions about abortion. Go to MetaTalk, don't say "screw you" to people. Act like someone who wants to be here. Thank you
Well, you said take it to MetaTalk. So I have. I don't think my
opinions on abortion should be considered invalid, simply because I am male. I don't think I should get the ole delete hammer, because I am considered "crabby." I was accused of calling women sluts, which I certainly did not do. One person inferred it, a couple others jumped on the proverbial bandwagon, and I got saddled with something I didn't do. Yes, I said "Screw you." I think that IS acting like I want to be here, know how the joint works, and don't much feel like getting piled on for something I didn't do in the first place. I'm sure there a lot of reasons to not like me, but if you are going to pick one and broadcast it, at least make sure it is true.

What is MeFi's policy on posting the text of WikiLeaks cables?
Posts like these effectively ban anyone who works for a US government agency, defense contractor and who knows who else from even viewing the thread while at work. Couldn't people just post links instead and leave it up to the viewer to click on them? After all, it's generally accepted courtesy elsewhere on MeFi to label NSFW links as such before posting them.

About the (fabulous) 'X new comments, show' function: I can't say enough good things about this, as it makes following long threads so easy compared to the old system of having to reload. But why not take it just a small step further - instead of making us click to load them, why not just have the script go ahead and
load the new comments when they are detected? (Maybe a user preference?)

Feature request: would it be possible to add an option to display the time of posts in 24 hour notation instead of the default 12 hour? It's not hugely important but it would be so nice for us

I have a new computer, and I am reinstalling all my special bells and whistles. What's that handy little app that puts an arrow on the left-hand margin of MeFi posts, scrolling you down to wherever you last were in the thread? And how can I get it?

My FPP this morning supported legitimate outrage against a clearly terrible list of movies. This deletion is totally unwarranted and should be reversed.

So why do you participate here on MetaFilter? Is it because
you "have a serious and unhealthy addiction to the internet, perhaps due to issues of procrastination and life avoidance, and ... metafilter is like a group of enablers in encouraging that kind of psychodynamic?" Or, perchance, do you visit frequently for some other reason(s)?

I posted
this question on the green not too long ago about the best cat in the world. My little fellow didn't make it through his surgery but I feel confident those who responded helped make the right decision. Thank you for your support.

How Do MeFites Do It?, or Maybe I'm Not Spending Enough Time on the Computer Perhaps?
I'm here to inquire about the phenomenon of responding to FPPs. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get around to reading or viewing all of the linked articles/sites/videos on a post. By that time, it's too late to participate in the exchange of responses or even be meaningful saying anything at all on the blue so long after the fact.

I was afraid from the start that
this post would get out of hand. Unfortunately it seems I was right. If we have to rage, let's do it here instead. And while we're at it, maybe we can discuss whether & how a different framing could have prevented or minimized the train wreck we see before us.

So that new 'more questions' thing on the ask.metafilter front page? How do I turn it off? I don't want to load an ever growing mega page with everything all at once and apparently neither does my computer. Downloading small chunks was easier for the computer's processer and works way better for my skimming, and I want to go back.

Just thought it worth mentioning that one of the guys behind the new Pruitt-Igoe doc linked on the front page is a MeFite who
showed up in the thread last night to thank MeFi (or Memepool) for turning him on to the subject of his first film,
Jandek on Corwood, back in 2002.
