Determining "D'oh!" draft delay
Would it be possible to create draft FPPs before the end of the 24-hour delay? In other words, you would get the D'oh!/"you have already posted a link in the past 24 hours" page after hitting publish instead of when you click on New Post. I think the 24-hour delay is a good thing but it's intended to prevent people from posting not writing. Changing the order would allow people to check HTML formatting and link accuracy earlier in the writing process if they want to post on back-to-back days. Aside from changing the back end of the publishing process (which I know nothing about and may very well be insurmountable) would it add additional work or issues for the mods over time? Is this something that other people who post FPPs would like? [more inside]
Extreme weather check-in
North America is being slammed by a breakaway polar vortex and Australia is melting under brutal record heat. Stay safe, everyone, and share how you're coping with it if you wish. Three-dog nights? Ice bucket immersions?

äggs and tamago and huevos oh my
This post in Ask about an eggs-and-toast equivalent in other cuisines is just really great and if you haven't seen it yet please go check it out.
There is no coin cabal
Over in the Hyucking Hyuck thread, MysticMCJ proposed the idea of a US politics megathread challenge coin as a physical symbol of, er, whatever this all is. People got into the idea, and a quick straw poll having shown sufficient interest to potentially make production worthwhile, here's a space for those interested in the idea to talk about it. Metatalktail Hour: Sparking Joy
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I want to do one of my favorite things, which is ask you to show us a picture of something in your space that you love! In honor of Marie Kondo mania, show us (or tell us about) something in your home or office or garden or car or wherever that you absolutely adore and that always sparks joy! [more inside]

“Waiter, there's a Meta in my soup.”
End of another week, let's lighten the mood and talk about something that is not politics. Here in Canada it's bitterly cold and I could do with some warmth, some happy in my tummy. I'm thinking about soup. Tomato, chicken-noodle, broccoli-cheddar, roasted squash, whatever it is, share your recipes with MetaFilter. Feel free to also talk about your favorite store-bought ready made soup. Or maybe it's a memory of a really good soup a loved one made for you. Whether it's a broth, bisque, consomme, or chowder, I want to talk about soup. Also,a gentle remember to be kind to each other and take care of yourself.

Still "Best of the Web": A typical but great AskMe this morning
[This is a general appreciation post and maybe those are not cool for MetaTalk anymore but I generally appreciate you so I am trying it.]
chesty_a_arthur wrote an AskMe question this morning about a commonly-repeated but factually-unclear legal point: do mothers get legal preference in U.S. child custody cases? Within 4 hours, there are 7 substantive answers, with links to 6 general articles and 4 scholarly papers that are on-point. [more inside]

Rest in Peace, MovableBookLady
Hi everyone. I'm here with a heavy heart to let you know that our beloved MovableBookLady has passed away. I heard the sad news from her best friend, Amy, who took the time to send me a thoughtful reply during this difficult time. From Amy: "She very much enjoyed her relationship with all of you! You were a source of laughter and joy to her! Thank you so much for being part of her life!" [more inside]
Pony: Small Fix to Classic Theme on Mobile
The classic theme on mobile doesn't make it easy for me to make a post in any of the subsites. I have to switch to standard so I can access the new post link, then switch back to continue my mobile responsive experience. Is anyone else experiencing this? May I request a pony that would make this more readily accessible like it is in the other themes please? Thank you!

Pony - link to active threads no longer on the first page
As a frequent reader and occasional commentator on the Brexit threads, it's always seemed odd to me that we have a sidebar dedicated to US politics threads - and who would be masochistic enough to want to read the megathread from three iterations ago?? - but we don't have this functionality for other similar, comment-heavy threads that run on beyond their time on the front page. Could we change the US politics sidebar to instead reflect all threads with a longer lifespan? [more inside]

MetaComfort
Let's talk about stress-relief. When you're faced with stress, what do you do to provide yourself a bit of comfort? Do you cook a familiar meal? Do you listen to a song? Is there a television show/series you re-watch? Maybe you exercise or you drink your favorite drink. Or it's as simple as calling or visiting with a friend or a loved one. What are your comfort hacks? Let's share our methods of dealing with stress. Be well my fellow MetaFilter friends. Remember to take care of yourself and know that you matter.

Deleting meta-commentary without just silencing pile-on victims?

Keeping arguing about the US primaries in check
The US political cycle is creeping into the beginning of the 2020 primary season, and that means we need to talk about avoiding the stuff that has gone badly on MetaFilter in previous election cycles. That means folks making a collective effort to avoid the worse discussion dynamics we've seen in the past, and it means the mod team pushing hard when folks aren't succeeding at that effort. [more inside]
Hand pain and links
I can’t be the only person on this site with hand pain. Carpal tunnel is pervasive, and lots of people have arthritis. For those of us who have hand pain, it hurts to click on a link. So I generally don’t go to links unless I know there’s something I want to see. Sometimes people link using a word like “this” or “here” with no other explanation. If someone, say, asks for muffin recipes and I want to contribute one, I have to click on the vague links to make sure I’m not repeating what that person said. And having to click on a link without knowing what it is is annoying even for people without hand pain. I’m guessing this is something many people don’t even think about. Fellow MeFites, I’d like to ask you to think about it. Please identify your mystery links.
Best Ask advice on surviving a breakup

Metatalktail Hour: Good Place Smells
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, inspired by the return of The Good Place, I want to know what your Good Place would smell like! For those who are not fans of the show, The Good Place smells like your favorite smell in the world. 148: 2019 New Year Call-In Episode
Sheesh, it's a week into the year and I still keep trying to write "2018" on my podcasts. But it's the new year, and Jessamyn and I catch up on what's happened on the big blue linky sea lately. Also occasionally featuring my neighbor's rented wood chipper! But also, more importantly, featuring messages from a whole bunch of MeFites who called in to share well wishes, new year greetings, old year ass-and-screendoorings, and some lovely and heartfelt thoughts about where they are, where we are, and hoping for us all to keep getting there together in the next year. Looking for an AskMe post about question asking culture in North America
I'm looking for a post in AskMetafilter that happened within the last year or so, I'm pretty sure. The poster had moved recently to somewhere in Canada or the northern U.S. from elsewhere in North America and was dismayed to find that people there seemed to only talk about themselves and never ask questions of others. The post got lots of replies and the consensus seemed to be that it was a cultural difference within certain areas in North America regarding whether it was considered polite to ask questions when meeting someone new.
Anybody remember this one? I've tried searching for all the terms I could think of.

Tell Me Something Good....
I've had kind of a hard week, and, this weekend, I'd like to hear some stories of positive MetaFilter interactions. So please, speak to me of kindnesses and humor from other MeFites, onsite and off. Comments that buoyed your spirits, interactions that made the murky clear, friendships made and expanded. I could use a little schmoopy right now.
MetaMetaTalk and MetaModeration Thereof
In another MeTa post, a moderator made comments that some found to be unmodly. That other MeTa became a more wide-ranging discussion of moderation (and metamoderation), to the point that it has been agreed that a different MetaTalk post should be started. This is that MetaTalk post. [more inside]
A Metafilter community on Dreamwidth
I've read before about LiveJournal nostalgia and general personal blogging yearnings, especially during the recent Tumblr debacle. While I was composing a response to this AskMe seeking a community of active personal blogs, I remembered an idea I'd had kicking around for a while about making a Metafilter community on Dreamwidth, so I made one. This provides a reading page of community member journal posts over the past two weeks; any MeFite could join the community (or leave it at any time) and be included automatically. [more inside]

Murrrrrrder?
Earlier today after a passing a family while walking down the street I said to my wife, "The interesting question to me isn't why some people murder their children. It's why anyone doesn't murder their children" - I didn’t think comments about murdering any types of people were allowed, but this one still stands. [more inside]
MetaNumbers
Let's lighten the mood. It's towards the end of the week and I want to hear about something not related to politics. It's 2019 and we just went up another number. This has me thinking about numbers in general. Tell me about a number that is significant to you. Maybe it's a number that always shows up in your life, or it's a number that is lucky, or you just like the number because of the way it looks or sounds. It could even be a fact about a number you learned on this site. Let's dig deep and talk about numbers.

Dammit Louis! You eff up everything you touch.
We’ve seen 2 FPPs on the revealed Louis CK performance killed today, which, ok, understandable. The guy has morphed into an absolutely indefensible monster. Still, the discussions here have lead some of us to have over 20 years of on & off participation with MetaFilter.
I was excited to see the diverse minds of this community approach his attempted return. While Taz’ reasoning of not wanting to give this shithead a platform for his loathsome hate speech isn’t objectionable per se, this community is mature enough to discuss this and the articles cited in the 2 FPPs are interesting enough to spark informed discussion.
Sadly it’s probably too late to try posting this again if the mods decide it’s alright to make a 3rd attempt. I’d like to believe we, the peeps of MF, could have handled it with another incisive and educational public conversation.
