waferbaby redesign.

what? no love for waferbaby?

Editorializing on the front page

Shouldn't you post rants on your own blog if you have one?

my domain has also been stolen

In the vein of hoopla.com and smug.com, my domain has also been stolen. I have no idea what to do about this. I'm stuck in rural Ontario on a brutally slow dialup connection, and it's tough to do anything internet-related out here. Is there anything I can do? [more inside]

A litterbox for pooflinging

Groan. Please. Stop.

Maybe we can set up a litterbox someplace where the concerned parties can fling the usual turds at each other till their batteries run down. These FPPs don't even seem to be conducive to discussion anymore. Agree to disagree already.

seethru.co.uk is closing down

seethru.co.uk is closing down. i never really liked it anyway but would check their weblog now and then for some lame online quizzes. however their random url generator and websites no-one has thought of yet were pretty good.

webloggers should cluster themselves into like-minded groups

SDB suggests that webloggers cluster themselves into like-minded groups, and cross-link accordingly. Disagreements (including here) are what he calls "religious" in nature: "A-list" vs. warblogger, "E/N" vs. "A-list", etc. Does Steve's structuralist argument hold up? Are his characterizations fair or accurate? Do you slot yourself into a group? Are the blogs you link to in a similar vein as yours?

behavior in obitfilter

Lots and lots of people have died, even musicians and oceanographers. It's been happening for a long time, and for many different reasons. People have different ways of dealing with/commemorating a death, if they care at all. Sometimes they throw a party. So don't get all pissed when I'm in the back row, giggling at the all-too-public funeral

Emails in Profiles

I think it's fantastic that our email addresses are now shielded from non-members, but that still means that 13,000 people are free to send anonymous flames to any member--or to sign them up for spam. How about this: Instead of the profile page displaying the email address, it shows an email form. One would have to be logged in to use it, the sender's username would show up in the email, and the recipient's address would remain hidden.

NYC meetup pics

I seem to be the first one back home and at a PC, so I guess this'll be the NYC mefi meet...please post links to pics and whatnot...Rob the EMT does exist and he says hello..so fire away with reports from the feild brothers and sisters...

What's the MeFi duplicate FPP record?

Triple? Quad? What's the MeFi duplicate FPP record?

font preferences consistent across sites!

As of some time this afternoon my font preferences from MeFi are working in MeTa also. Is this new or is IE just acting up again? I'm in mac OS 9.2, IE 5.1

Bring your daughter to MeFi day

"A few daughters are in the office today. I'm going to show them stuff like Blogger, CNet, Loobylu and Habbo Hotel. What would you show them?" 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. (The community has spoken. No comment here.)

non-English characters - do I just need to try harder?

I was gonna post a link in MeFi and wanted to have my post contain a few chinese characters. . .believe me this would have been a laugh riot. I pasted in some Chinese and they came out as question marks on the preview so I decided that it would not have been THAT funny after all.

Is there something intrinsic in the MeFi servers that prevent non-English characters, or do I just need to try harder?

Cold Fusion error when not logged in

I'm getting a Cold Fusion error instead of the frontpage if I'm not logged in at the moment.

P.S. Metafilter mentioned on webmonkey today!

I love the thread-ends

When a MeTa thread has played its course, chattiness and jokes sometimes rush in. Although I realize it's a minority sport, I just love thread-ends. There's something ecological about using left-overs for imaginative and friendly banter. Is my excuse, anyway...

Like soon-to-be-deleted threads on MetaFilter, they serve a useful pressure-valve purpose: they redirect playfulness away from serious discussions and probably inhibit initiating purposefully chatty posts. At least for me. Is this acceptable, now that MetaTalk has become specifically Meta again? Or, at least, can it be lived with? I hope so.

NYT registration generator

Tired of using mefi/mefi to log into the New York Times?

Now you don't have to.

Dynamic threading

Kuro5hin's implementation of dynamic threading almost makes threading easy to follow and use. Impressive use of technology to solve a usability problem (reading deeply threaded conversations online is a real bear, requiring many page loads).

Are Internet celebrities the next big thing

Matt & MeFi (via Shift.com's list) named in SacBee article Are Internet celebrities the next big thing or simply one-hit wonders?
