Why was this question deleted?
why? I was looking forward to reading this one and had marked it as a favorite (as had others). Do we have to explain why we ask each and every question now?
Finding the line between chatfilter and AskMe
What's the key difference between "what are some great movie scenes involving food?" and "what are some great upbeat 80s songs?" that gets one post deleted and not the other?
Supplementary question -- has anyone ever noticed these help-me-with-my-list posts turning up in articles? I can't help but think that some of the people asking "name some movies for me where happens?" are getting their journalistic homework done via Ask. Is that cool if they are, or do we feel used?
On another forum, someone asked a "name some TV shows where <foo> happens" question, and I not only heard my answer on the radio three days later but heard it word for word. The guy had obviously cut-and-pasted my exact words and read them out on air.

Chatfilter is bad
Chatty open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of Ask Metafilter. Questions with no problem to be solved or where the problem is some variant of "I'm curious if other people feel like I do"
Increasingly chatty askme
An interesting post that became ChatFilter. A subsequent post that IS chatfilter. What bothers me is the trend. More questions are becoming increasingly open-ended. (I don't think that occhiblu's phrasing was particularly wrong, but I think that a lot of people, just because they're guys, thought that their opinion was useful) Which allows people to simply take a stab in the dark, offer their "off the cuff" insight, or otherwise just give an unresearched opinion. IMHO, this sort of thing defeats the purpose of an answer-oriented site.
Do you guys have JOBS?!
What Comic Character Would You Be?
If MeFi was a comic, would we all be small furry creatures or what? Would we be drawn like Doonesbury? Would it be a one panel or a strip? Would Matt be the lead character? Would it be more than one strip?
Chatfilter?
I really like this thread (and, in fact, participated in it, but isn't it pretty much the definition of chatfilter?
Brainstorming via AskMe is ChatFilter
ChatFilter? I'm brainstorming a novelty recipe book for a friend. Meh.
Take my survey; I don't think so!
Chatfilter
The definition of "chatfilter" is one that's hard to tie down, but an AskMe post starting with "Which love option would you choose?" and ending with "My mind's made up but I'm curious: What would you do?" seems like it fits the bill.

Excessively broad and vague question on AskMe
Studentguru asked an excessively broad and vague question a while back. It got canned. He has now posted almost the same question again. Is it can-worthy?
AskMe question being dragged into chatfilter
Who has ever, or intends to ever, or never will, view pornography, at work?
This Ask Metafilter is devolving into this question rather than how the situation should be handled.

Innocuous Comments Being Deleted in askme
AskMe deletions, again. I know it's annoying to hear us all complain about deletions constantly, but it seems like a lot of innocuous comments are getting axed. I understand not insulting the poster, or making just "wisecracks" (which in my mind are by definition at the expense of the poster) but does every bit of human interaction that doesn't quite solve the question -- but does engage with the poster in a respectful way -- need to go?
AskMe broad enough for a chatfilter to fall into it
This AskMe post is poorly worded and excessively broad.
Chatfilter?
Does this AskMe Post qualify for ChatFilter status or not?
What is the Policy on Chatfilter?
Why does this guy get a new asshole for not being scientific about his very unscientific question, when two complete morons, not to mention a related question, get helpful advice?
Chatfilter, yeah, but Christ -- so is half of AskMe.
Really. Tell me.
Is it simply the ebb and flow of the universe that requires some dumb questions go down in flames while others get answered?
Or is there a secret formula that evokes pity rather than scorn?

How is this not chatfilter?
"In light of the excellent responses generated by the "what is it like to be pregnant," I'd like to explore ejaculation and orgasm." The merits of the project aside, how is this not chatfilter?
ZOMG Horrible chatfilter.
ZOMG Horrible chatfilter. I really like this thread, but it epitomizes everything that is considered 'chatfilter'. No problem to solve, clearly 'a survey'. The poster only asked it because he wants to hear other people's experiences.
I would hate to see it deleted, but I'm pointing it out because I think the chat filter policy sucks.

This is a forum post, not an FPP
Chatfilter Guidelines
Why was this deleted as "chatfilter" while countless indistinguishable threads weren't? [more inside]
Has anyone here "gone crazy"?
Has anyone here "gone crazy"? Has anyone been a normal, functioning person, and then been diagnosed with a serious mental illness? When did you start to notice, and what was it like when you finally realized what was going on?
Somewhere on the border of ChatFilterDom
Is this really what AskMe is for? There's some good conversation in there, to be sure, but it's treading a real fine line between "genuinely want to know an answer to my quesion" and "trying to start a conversation with my question".
Chatfilter or Not?
I assume this question was deleted for being chatty, but what if it had been: "Can you name some scenes in film that feature popular songs where the on-screen characters actually sing along or otherwise interact with the music? I'm putting them together for a project etc etc....". Is everything on AskMe a "problem" looking for a solution?
Shoulda Been Anonymous
So, has anyone who opted to AskMefi an, ahem, embarassing/humiliating/etc question been discovered by a coworker, spouse, etc, whom the original poster thought never knew what mefi was? that is, anonymous posting is great and i want horror stories of those who didn't use it, raining upon them great consequences. stories please?
Why isn't my askme question valid?
Is my AskMe question valid?
Happy New Year!
Now that all of North America and Europe (where apparently >99% of us are) have passed into 2006, what are MetaFilterer's predictions for upcoming events this year?
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Is this chatfilter and do we want it?
Chatfilter? There's no "problem to be solved" and "each answer is equally valid". Which from what I understand is the normative definition of chat filter. I don't have a problem with chatfilter, but perhaps we could get some clarification, or fixing of the rules.
What character should I play on MeFi?

One user's great post is another user's meh....
I really don't care to see a FPP about what you vaguely remember your friend told you today. The Wikipedia links don't help, thanks.
Gossip is better than tittyfucking
I am very much against the anti-gossipy-threads bias of so many users and of Numero Uno. More inside.
When is unhelpful okay in AskMe?
So when is unhelpful okay and when is it not? This thread is a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of noise. I assume nobody cares because it's kind of a goofy question, but I think it raises the issue of when is unhelpful okay in AskMe and when isn't it? [more inside]
Why do Christians feel the way they do?
leave the metachat on metachat?
This seems like a pretty weak reason to delete a post, eh?
How is this thread not chatfilter?
How is this thread not chatfilter? The ensuing discussion about male vs. female doctors is pretty enlightening, but I don't really see how a question about we feel about a fake doctor's abilities as a doctor is the best use of AskMefi.
Fireside Chats with MeFites
Every once in a while, I find myself wanting to ask questions in Ask Metafilter that would fall under the category of "chat filter." I wonder how successful/productive a section of Metafilter resembling Coffee Talk with Linda Richman (you know, "Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic.") would be. Is there, by chance, any effort to produce such a section in the works?
Why Was I Deleted?
I posted a question to Ask Metafilter this morning, and it just vanished. What went wrong?

Where is my AskMe question about parallel universes?
So I posted a question about parallel universes on askmetafilter yesterday (got a bunch of great comments within the first hour) and when I checked in this morning I can't find the question either on the page or in the archives. Where is it?
Anybody have a good story?
this AskMe thread totally breaks the guidelines
C'mon, I like cats too, but I think this AskMe thread totally breaks the guidelines. It's chatfilter, impossible to produce a "best answer", and by no means fits the criteria of being able to produce interesting discussion.
example of everything not to do in an AskMe thread
Fanboy chatfilter in AskMe + snarky derail + fanboy calling derailer an "azzhole" = example of everything not to do in an AskMe thread.
Atheists, when did you lose your faith?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I thought threads like this were deemed chat filter and not appropriate for Ask MeFi.
What's your favorite scam?

Recent discussions of scams haven’t focused on what interests me about you, Metafilter users.
Tell me, if you please, what’s your favorite scam?

The fuzzy line of chatfilter
In this AskMe post, ad hoc asked whether or not people would accept an offer of immortality. Rushmc dubbed it a "chatfilter" question. Vacapinta pointed out that rushmc had asked a similar question ("what poetry books do you like?").
Here is rushmc's response to Vacapinta's accusation:
...That question was of direct practical benefit to me, as I discovered new-to-me poets to investigate and bought five of the works recommended in the thread, which was my purpose in asking the question. Immortality is not an option, so debating its desirability leads to no practical outcome.

chatfilter again?
We've discussed the usefulness/appropriateness of threads such as this, no?
Thank you, Matt
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Matt for deleting the Invisibility/Flight thread in Ask.Me
