Linking urls as links

It feels to me like I am seeing more and more urls just copy-pasted into comments, where people haven’t bothered adding them as links. It’s really easy to add a link, even when using Metafilter on a phone. On the bottom right of the input box, just click where it says “link” and copy-paste the url there in addition to in the text of the comment. Then make sure the text you want to be the clickable link is in between the tags (the two sets of angled brackets). Is there some reason people aren’t doing this? Is there a good way to encourage people to do it without berating them in threads or in a MetaTalk post like this? [more inside]

Why does this page display correctly even though the hack has been fixed

I found this page via the wiki, and wondered why it still displays correctly? Amazing to see it being tested and fixed in one page! I would like an ELI5 as well as a more technical explanation. Although this doesn't technically require community input I do feel it deserves to be seen (again in some people's cases.) (Noobs - scroll down to see!!) *smiley face emoticon*

Testing New HTML Buttons in the Modern Theme

Since we launched the modern theme, we've heard many times that the HTML bold, italic, and link buttons below comment forms don't seem to fit the new design. We're testing out some new buttons in this thread. [more inside]

What do you write your draft posts in?

Having a discussion on Twitter and I thought I could get some more answers from the community about what you use to draft your fpps in. Ideally looking for freebies I can download. Also somewhat interested in how people work, although this is just for curiosity's sake, and not really a problem to solve. Parsing Metafilter comments

I'm submitting this as a feature request, but I'm not sure that's the right category. I have difficulty parsing the comments in a metafilter thread. It's the way it's laid out, with the comment followed by the poster's name and other information:
Is there any way I could change it?
posted by Time To Sharpen Our Knives at 1:09 AM on October 22 [+] [!]
I'd rather see it parsed differently; prioritizing the name of the Mefite, followed by their post (in quotes, maybe?), then the remaining information. Something like this:
Time To Sharpen Our Knives posted:
"I'd rather see it parsed differently."
      1:10 AM on October 22 [+] [!]
Through some browser extension/hack/magic, is this possible?

Metafilter, Android, nginix or NSA bug?

Occasionally metafilter articles are garbled on my Android phone, although it happens very rarely on my Linux desktop chrome as well. Here is a sample screenshot, in which the discussion on the shellshock /bin/bash bug takes a very ominous turn. Reloading the page fixes it, although I do lose my place. Most frequently it happens with the inline updates.

Android, Firefox, and Metafilter commenting

More and more I find myself visiting Metafilter on my Android tablet. I am using Firefox 25.0.1 on a Nexus 7 with Android 4.3. Recently, commenting has become almost impossible - namely, any kind of HTML tags get very screwed up. Typically, I'll copy a comment I want to reply to, surround that with em tags and then reply. Lately, in the process of posting, Android or Firefox or Metafilter decides to empty the closing em tag (leaving two carats) and append a set of empty carats and a closing em tag to my whole post. Trying to clean it up leads to all kinds of problems - the cursor jumps around and deletes things on its own. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it Android, Firefox, Metafilter, or some combination of all three? Any help would be appreciated.

Can I easily retrieve the HTML of a deleted post?

You tell me how to retrieve the HTML from a post that got deleted plz kthx? (I posted something on the front page last night, and it got deleted for too much personal commentary. I'm fine with that.) User Goofyy and deleting admin kaz suggested that I re-post sans commentary. This is moderation, it's not racism. So is there an easy way to get the HTML of my post back, or will I have to just re-type it all? [more inside]

Malformed URLs get "fixed" in a weird way.

Are.you.serious?

This is going to be my first feature request on the site. I was wondering if it'd be possible to add a Sarcastic Font tag to our arsenal of HTML when posting. As many of you are aware, it is sometimes extremely hard to convey sarcasm in written text, and I think this would really benefit some people by spelling out when someone is being sarcastic. Here are some examples of its use. Thank you for your time, and just so you know, HAMBURGER jokes are so 2011 (or whenever that was first introduced).

HTML formated text goes poof.

It would be really nice if we got a warning when HTML formated text is not going to show up on a post preview instead of it just being deleted from the text box. Thanks for all the hard work!

Add a Link. Scroll Down. Add a Link. Scroll Down. Repeat Ad Infinitum.

Extremely minor pony request: After I use the "link" button in data entry boxes on "Create a New Post" pages, the view shifts to the very beginning of the text in the box. (The scroll bar goes all the way back to the top.) I tend to create posts which have a lot of links in them that fill up those boxes quickly. To find my place after creating a link, I then need to scroll down within the box. Would it possible to not have that happen? Can the cursor and view be left at the end of the link that has just been added instead? [more inside]

I want a hoverpony!

It is standard Metafilter practice is to add links inline, but when the website they point to dies or rearranges its content they become meaningless. I'd like Metafilter's link dialog to encourage us to add hoverable descriptions to our links. This wouldn't just preserve meaning when a link has died; it would give us a way to alert people to PDF or video files without putting distracting warnings (PDF) in the actual text.
