Reducing the load time for long threads.
For exceptionally long threads, would it be more CPU-friendly to stop rendering new pages every time someone clicked into the page after a certain point? Say, arbitrarily, 100 posts?
Skeleton next comment preview
Perhaps on the preview of a post or a comment, there should be a skeleton "next comment" that would show whether one has screwed up in one's tags (whether not closing them, or inserting an extra ") Obviously, this is a response to this entry.
Is there a way to include the TITLE attribute in front-page post links
Is there a way to include the TITLE attribute in front-page post links? Obviously it's trivial to add this to any hand-coded hrefs you include in your description, but not in the main link via the submission form. And what's the word on pimping the site where you found the link? Should we manually give credit in the description, or should a VIA field be officially added?
Bad link formed, fixed
Hey there - A post I made about a WA state Bill has had its link text munged - was this deliberate, or a bug? The original text said 'WA Lawmakers try to remove "repugnant" Theory of Evolution from schools'. It now just reads 'WA Lawmakers try to remove'. Just a curious thing - maybe quote-related. Thanks.

XML strips out HTML including links
Hi. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature request... Why does the XML feed at http://xml.metafilter.com/ strip out any HTML (namely links) out of the nodeValue of the body elements? Why does the feed at http://www.metafilter.com/metafilter.xml provide a synopsis and a link to more while the previously mentioned feed shows the complete text (it also strips out HTML too)? Boy, it'd be nice to implement some XML-RPC functions for common tasks (posting, logging in, etc.) and spice up the XML feed so that a developer could build a different client for MeFi...
Please don't change fonts.
Preview does not match post
This post had a white background when I previewed it (like this one still does), but it disappeared when I posted it. Shouldn't "Preview" mean "show me what I'll get if hit Post now"?
The HTML filter appears to have elided the "style=" and quote marks from the tag.

I tried to embed a midi
I tried to embed a midi of "Celebrate (good times)" to topple a thread at 99 posts. It was there in the preview screen but absent after posting. This is a bug.
Broken html messing up the place.
Caching issues, maybe?
Whenever I have visited MeFi index.html today, and I am not logged in, I only see posts up to about 10 a.m. today (11/6). (I use a lot of public machines over the course of the day, so that's why I'm never logged in. It's also why I'm sure it's not a cache issue.)
Weird Code in Comments
It may be just me, but in just the last couple of days I'm finding that my comments are being auto-appended with extra <p>, resulting in a few lines of blank space after my comments but before the comment footer. At first I figured it was just me being careless with extra <p> tags lying around in my post, but it's happening every time and this test post exhibited the same behavior. In the second paragraph, I typed the line and inserted no paragraph or br tags, and didn't even hit return to start a new line- yet after hitting "Post" there are extra <p> tags in the HTML after posting. Thoughts?

This is a test to make sure unclosed tags get closed. Of course it will work. (I purposefully left the bold and italics tags open on this post

How to I use the image tag?
I have noticed some comment posts have images....is this "allowed" and if so, how does an oaf like me do it too? (Advanced apologies for my ignorance. I did search but couldnt find the answer.)
How does he do that?
Html question: how does Matt get the top table to extend all the way to the top, left and right, with no space? How does he get the Meta-logo and Community 'blog graphics to sit flush with the edges of the page?
Whenever I try something like that, there's always space between the edge of the page and the table and between the edge of the table and the images.

Stop Allowing HTML
Strip all HTML from posts, only allow a few basic tags by using [ and ] like those funny message boards do. This could allow hyperlinking and basic formatting without the problems that, e.g., the style attribute brings up. (There’s no way to prevent people from impersonating other users, messing up the page, etc., except by disallowing the use of HTML.) What do you think?
Can we ban the use of the tag?
Can we ban the use of the <font> tag? Or at least run a test to make sure if someone opens an HTML tag they have to close it? If I have to read one more shrunken thread I'm going to scream.
What's up with the huuuuuge blank space?

Overlapping date and topic headers
Anyone else getting screwy date and (MeTa) topic headers? They're overlapping the text in some cases.
I remember someone asking about the HTML coding for these recently, so maybe it's been changed, and not quite right. Matt, I've got cropped screen caps if you want.

Problems with Links
I can never include a link in my comments. I go through the motions and the appropriate window appears but then, when I preview or post the comment, it either comes out as gobbledygook or disappears.
Why is this? Subliminally it also makes me post more than I would feel like - because URL links are so effectively rendered when you post one to the front-page- so this is a real problem.
What can the matter be?

Static HTML Issues
How long will metafilter's static-html "crisis mode" last? It's become quite difficult to follow and participate in conversations without the "New: X" portion of the comments link.
Bug in the search results.
Is it just me, or are the "Go to the detail view for this result" links on search results not scrolling to the anchor points?
problem with the time stamps
In this thread there seem to be a problem with the time stamps. More Inside.
No Blockquote?
when I use blockquote, it screws up the formatting for the rest of the page (margin way-left). what should I be using instead?
Community HTML fixes
I like the fact that posters can leave HTML tags unclosed and that other people come along and "save" the page. It builds communty strength. Even if a way is devised to automatically close tags, I vote against implementing it.
(and I don't like that I am incapable of editing copy on a computer screen and don't notice errors until it's too late.)

can we validate?
Matt has said that a lot of the maintenance work he does is fixing HTML errors. Does anyone know of an easy way to run posts through an HTML Validator and reject the ones that don't pass?
Just happened to look at the MeFi source
Just happened to look at the MeFi source and realized that it contains no fewer than ten META tags, all identical expiration directives with a date in 1990. Is this some kind of workaround for a weird browser bug with expiring pages from its cache? If so I'm mildly curious to hear which browser needs ten copies of the tag to take the hint. ;)
Error with the MeFi scholarship link in Opera.
Opera5 shows the "MetaFilter college scholarship" as an off yellow link but it's not clickable. After a quick glance at the HTML it seems Opera doesn't like the negative value, "margin-top:-20px". It looks like there's an unclosed DIV tag around that area too, well, maybe.
HTML in Posts
This isn't a feature request per se, but I'm wondering if there are any guidelines about what HTML is OK in posts. I was experimenting tonight, trying to get a quote to format correctly as a block, and nothing worked. It seemed like using any block tag (yes, closed correctly) just totally trashed the formatting of the rest of the comment. No biggie, and I didn't want to mess things up for following posters, so I refrained. But. . . are there any general rules? (besides "just say no"?) And are entities OK or do they get munged somehow? (using IE5/Mac, btw)
404'd

MeFi stylesheet question
Another minor one: Is there any reason why the MeFi stylesheet is being inlined into the html instead of linking to an external file? Is this a browser support workaround or something?
I know its not a very big sheet, but seeing that linked stylesheets can be cached, that would knock off about 2K for every page viewed.

Putting HTML tags in a post works in preview, but not in the actual post
I wanted an HTML tag to appear in my post, so I typed ampersand-lt-semicolon and ampersand-gt-semicolon for the karats. Looked fine in preview, but they got converted to karats -- and therefore invisible comments -- for the post.
I need html help
Can someone please point me to a FAQ or help section on this weird editor? I want to know specifically
a) how to post a link in a comment and
b) how to set bold, italics, other fonts, etc.
thanks. . .

HTML Tidy
I realize I'm probably the last person on the web to have noticed this program, but HTML Tidy is pretty cool. It's an open source utility for cleaning up HTML: closing mismatched tags, etc. It seems that Haughey currently has to go in at times and close tags that posters leave open. I wonder if filtering entries through a program like this could save him from that chore. I'm sure this isn't the only utility of its type; does anyone know of others?

There should be an easier way to quote someone else's post/comment. I've tried using
