Previously on MetaFilter
Is it time to let go of "Previously?" Some topics have been explored, revisited, or detailed here many times, meaning that revisiting them in order to choose a "Previously" can be a time-consuming exercise. In 2024, MetaFilter tags, the search bar, and search engines provide many ways to access old site content.* Finding older relevant MetaFilter content is not the challenge that it was in 1999. On the other hand, MeFites do still comment favorably on things they have found in "Previously" links. [more inside]
CamelCase reminder for tagging new posts?
Relatively small request: Can we change the text above the Tags field when making new posts so that it encourages using CamelCase when combining multiple words into one tag, to help members with visual impairments who use screenreaders? For instance, changing the example in the text "searchengine" to "SearchEngine"? This will help screenreading software better parse the meaning of the tag. [more inside]
Profile tags pony?
MeFi user profiles show a user's most used tags for the Blue and the Green. Could we find a way to add, and would other users be interested in adding, FanFare and maybe MeTa tags to that, too?
Platform/system requirements in video game posts
Many thanks to everyone who makes MetaFilter posts about cool new video games! And one request: When possible, could these posts please include information about which platforms the game runs on? [more inside]
Can FanFare posts have a "where you can see this" field?
Often there are FanFare posts which don't mention where the movie or TV show can be watched - whether it's a streaming service, broadcast TV or only in theaters. A number of times, I've had to do web searches to find where I can watch something. Sometimes, a tag lists where to watch, but it's certainly not done consistently. Can a "Where to watch" field be added to the Show Information? [more inside]
Post tags and deadnames
I posted Daniel Mallory Ortberg’s latest instalment of his ongoing serial fic. When tagging the post, I was conflicted about tagging it with his deadname (which is “Mallory Ortberg”. Two questions:
1) on a technical level, will tagging with his full name link up with older posts tagged with his deadname, since the latter is included in the former? He’s the same author, and that continuity of work seems valuable.
2) on a trans-etiquette level, is this shitty and equivalent to deadnaming? (I’m more interested in hearing what trans folks have to say on this one.)
I ended up tagging the post with his name and his deadname but I’m questioning that.
MetaWheelhouse
What is your Meta "thing" so to speak. We know some people 🙄 post a lot about video games. I was looking at my profile and surprised but not surprised to realize I've made 211 posts with the tag: videogames and 161 posts with the tag: literature. What are your top tags? What do you find yourself posting the most about?
A tag-searhc Pony
Sometimes people misspell their tags on posts. An example: this old post of mine which I tagged with bobbygentry instead of bobbiegentry. (I’ve since fixed this.) Right now, when you search by tag you get back a list of matching tags and tags that contain your search as a substring. I think it would be helpful if we also returned a list of results that have similar spellings in case the post you’re trying to find has a tag typo.
Staff tags expanded to the Blue and the Green
To make mod notes a tiny bit easier to see and find, we've added Staff badges, like the ones currently used in MetaTalk, to MetaFilter and Ask MetaFilter. [more inside]
GraphFi + user tags chrome extension
Hi friends,
Remember when yourcelf made GraphFi and it was great? Well, it still is great, only now it is also available as a chrome extension that I threw together.
I've also added another thing that I've always wanted to make threads easier to follow - user tagging!
Yay! Enjoy it (or hate it), and let me know what you think!

Marking links to tweets
There are a lot of links to tweets where the link text is the text of the tweet. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate not having to click a mystery link to find out what it says, and I understand that we want to cite our sources, but it's annoying to click something expecting to read about some topic and find that I've already read everything there is to read. Could we have some sort of post-link marker to indicate that clicking the link will take you to a tweet that says exactly what the link says? Maybe [tw] or [twpic] or something if the tweet has no other text but some multimedia content? [more inside]
How should you tag posts?
I’ve made many posts, and given them lots of tags. Often, I’ve often gotten very specific with them - adding all of the names of the authors of news articles, etc. Lately, as I’ve tried to search for buried threads, I’ve become uncertain that getting so specific has been particularly useful. (Someone looking for a post isn’t likely to remember that it contained a particular news article written by person X as opposed to the article’s topic.) What are your best practices for tagging posts, and your best practices for searching for tagged posts?

The tiniest of #ponies
Well, perhaps not *that* tiny -- if one goes to the main Tags page, one finds a spiffy tag cloud of most-often-used tags. What I would love to see is the ability to enter a tag to search by -- say a text field with submit button. [more inside]

FanFare request: Make tagging a little easier
For TV episode posts in FanFare threads, can we have an option of importing tags from the previous episode's post? Or maybe have tags for the show itself that can be applied to each episode? [more inside]
Tags, singular and plural: smoosh them all into one?

Allowing non-posters to add tags
Tags for posts are wildly variable, and plenty of tags that ought to be used on a post very often are not. It would be easy to fix this if any member, not just the poster or moderators, were able to edit or at least add tags to a post. This would make the entire tag system more accurate, make topics easier to find, research, and browse through, and otherwise make the site more useful.
Any chance this could be implemented? Thanks.

Tagging Users In Comments and Posts
I know that things are rough right now, and Metafilter is understaffed and all that (everybody donate $10 right now!), but I was hoping that maybe there could be a way to tag other users easily a la Facebook and Twitter, etc, so that if we add an @ in a comment or post, we could just add the username and the name would link to that person's profile. Android, Firefox, and Metafilter commenting
More and more I find myself visiting Metafilter on my Android tablet. I am using Firefox 25.0.1 on a Nexus 7 with Android 4.3. Recently, commenting has become almost impossible - namely, any kind of HTML tags get very screwed up. Typically, I'll copy a comment I want to reply to, surround that with em tags and then reply. Lately, in the process of posting, Android or Firefox or Metafilter decides to empty the closing em tag (leaving two carats) and append a set of empty carats and a closing em tag to my whole post. Trying to clean it up leads to all kinds of problems - the cursor jumps around and deletes things on its own. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it Android, Firefox, Metafilter, or some combination of all three? Any help would be appreciated.
How do you decide which tags to include?
When constructing FPPs for the blue, how do you determine which tags to use? Nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, things that appear in your post, things that don't appear in your post, number of tags? I'm rarely ... no, never ... happy with the tags I assign to a post and wonder if they are rubbish, and future readers interested in the subject will never find it because of insufficient tagging, or readers not interested in the post will come across it because of vague or overdone tagging. Reminded of this issue when looking at, and admiring, the (IMHO) beautifully contextual and comprehensive tagging that has gone into that post. [more inside]
Scatter pony
I have a dual-foaled pony request for AskMe:
1. That there be a separate category for identification requests, for everything including Flora and Fauna, Music and Movies, etc.
2. When these ID questions are marked as resolved, the asker has an additional prompt to add the correct/bestest answer to the tags, in addition to resolved. [more inside]
Is there a way to find most favorited posts with [xyz] tag?
We can find "popular favorites" going back a day, week, month, all-time. And we can find all of the posts with a given tag. Is there a way to combine these two features, to find, say, "Posts with the tag [books] that have been most favorited?"
Unpopular Tags
The page Popular tags on MetaFilter has a list of the 150 most-used tags. What about the least-used tags? Is there a list of tags that have only been used once? What about a list of tags only used by one user?
Tags with weird characters
When tags with non-ASCII characters appear in the tag search results, the links are broken (while tags with non-Latin-1 characters are simply not accessible by any means). Tags with percent signs make the server grumpy. Underscores also seem to be treated somewhat inconsistently (or at least counterintuitively) by the tag search. [more inside]
Also, I would like an inter-engine fermentation system.
We have clouds for the top 150 tags posted to Mefi, Music, Meta, Jobs, IRL and Ask. We can see the top ten tags we've used listed on user profiles. Would it be possible to view all tags (or a greater subset than 'top ten') for individual users, either in a list or cloud form? [more inside]
Tags
I'm curious about how people make use of tags on MetaFilter. Is there any data on it? I only ever find myself using them while searching to avoid double-posting, but I wonder if people use them to find content and threads? I know one way to use them is through the MyMeFi page. Is there any data on how many people primarily read MetaFilter that way?

April Last!
Just wanted to mention that the semi-official thread of this year's MetaFilter April Fool's Thingy (and the only one that continued to issue "staff tags" to every comment after April 1st was over) is going to be closing in a few hours. So if you haven't found out what your randomly-selected title is supposed to be, go there and leave a comment. (And if you don't like the tag you've been given, just refresh the page! It's so random!) [more inside]
