Mathowie on The Morning News
The Morning News is hosting a round table discussion on writing on the web, with mathowie among the contributors. Check it out.
Slate Mention
MetaFilter is cited for its good discussion thread on IT at Slate. Just thought you'd want to know. I wonder how many standard media reporters look at MetaFilter for ideas or witty comments?
Shift Magazine
A tree grows in San Francisco. Shift always seemed rather snooty about MeFi, and they once again left it out of their 100 top web sites (while embracing Plastic), but it was a nice surprise to find this front of the mag feature.
A quote from Philippe Gully on sites and advertising.
Philippe Gully: A site owing its survival only to its advertisers cannot speak freely: the advertisers could refuse to be associated to a statement or a point of view that is not his.
MeFi in the Sunday Times
I hope this is the right place to post this. I've waited a day and nobody else seems to have mentioned it, but Metafilter got a nice write up in the Sunday Times (London) this weekend.
Brief mention-in-passing of MeFi on The Register
Brief mention-in-passing of MeFi on The Register, in context of Kuro5hin being dropped from VA's OSDN network...
Matt interviewed by Derek Powazek.
For Newbies(and the odd Oldie too): Here's some good and timely advice from Derek Powasek's Conversation with Matt Haughey, back when MetaFilter only had 2000+ members. It's probably been posted before, but will be new to many of us late-comers.. In fact, it should be read along with the guidelines, IMO(it certainly chastised me...). A good chaser is a link from the About page here at MeFi, where you get Powazek discussing Metafilter.
Food for thought, to say the least: how important are original and innovative links? Very.

MetaFilter in the WSJ
The WSJ on MetaFilter:
One site that never fails to captivate me, especially lately, is MetaFilter (www.metafilter.com), a community weblog where members post provocative links and argue about them.

MeFi in Creative Review Magazine (UK) -- a request
metafilter in creative review magazine - if any uk souls have the latest copy which has a feature on usability, and screenshots/editorial of metafilter, could you please post the copy and a scan if possible?
OJR on /. during 9-11
Interesting article at the On-line Journalism review looking at how Slashdot's users turned to them when the news sites went down during the 9.11 crisis. Although Mefi's reaction has been examined elsewhere in depth, it's interesting to note here how a 'niche' site was able to cope with the demands of its users.
Library weblogs: some media hotness
Library weblogs are in the news this month in both the major librarian print publications: Library Journal [linked] and American Libraries [print only]. I have nothing special to say about this, but it's one more notch on the keyboard for webloggers.

Matt's Sony thread from the other day
Good Morning Silicon Valley mentioned Matt's Sony thread from the other day. Scroll to the bottom.

MeFi - NPR connection?
On most days I listen to NPR. At least once a day I read about something on metafilter and moments/hours later there is an NPR story on it; Or the opposite - I listen to a story and then discover a thread covering the exact story, usually with added information and/or related links. I suppose this isn't very exciting. What I'm wondering is if anyone else has had this experience with metafilter converging with other traditional media so seamlessly?
Blogdex Ranking
I'd just like to point out that blogdex lists MeFi as the Number 4 All-Time Linked site on over 10,000 blogs. The first three are all blog-creation or blog-hosting sites, so I guess that makes MeFi really the #1 community site. but we knew that, didn't we ;-)
mention of MeFi in USA Weekend
mention of MeFi in USA Weekend. The blurb says "This collaborative weblog features links posted by all sorts of surfers on all sorts of topic." Technically right, but oh Gannett, how you could do so much more.
Matt's in the news
Rock-star Matt Haughey is in the news again (with gratuitous photo). This time, in a New York Times article on the Amazon honor system (penned by Ironminds' Andy Wang).
Mefi compared to chemical spill
I think Lance finally hit upon the perfect motto:
"Like a great train wreck involving hundreds dead in a chemical spill that strips the skin off babies and puppies and makes the entire population collectively vomit up blood, I keep coming back to look some more."

More Yahoo Internet Life dead tree press on MetaFilter
More Yahoo Internet Life dead tree press on MetaFilter: my dad subscribes to YIL and sent me these scans. It looks like an article mentioned on the cover talks about plastic, slashdot, and then metafilter and blogger, and it shows up in a pull out URL section.

Translation of the French article about MeFi linked on the sideblog
Re: The article in French, linked on the sideblog.
Don't take this as a perfect translation, I've only had 4 years of French (in an american public school, no less), but here's the first paragraph of that article.
Last February 28th, the earth rumbled in Seattle, USA. Even before an urgent dispatch came across the news wire services, a net surfer wrote on the american website Metafilter: "I'm sitting at work in the Real Networks building. We have just experienced close to a minute of jostling and shaking. There is now a six foot crack on the wall of my office. Looking around, nothing appears to have fallen over, but there are crowds of people on the sidewalks." This web surfer relayed the news, like every day on Metafilter, one of the most significant american "Web logs".

overheard in the plastic.com conference room:
"Ok kids, it's redesign time! I say we reduce the slashdottedness by... oh, say 12%, and increase the weblog/metafilter look by 28%."

Metafilter in the Media
Would it be too, I don't know...conceited to create a press page that keeps track of mentions of metafilter in the media? Sometimes it's nice to re-read good writeups of the site when it's 2am, and I'm at the end of my rope, responding to the umpteenth request for a new feature :).
Ah, jeezuz, I'm caught in a loop.
I don't feel like putting this on the MeFi front, it's just way too much navelgazing, even for my celebrity-addled sensitivites.
Checka-checka, Ironminds, the best “webzine” (I mean that in a good way) produced by unpaid contributors, linked to a MetaFilter discussion about a story they posted invoking Kurt Cobain. Their point in linking to MeFi, was to predict a Plastic backlash.

Kottke Critiques Online Discussion
Kottke offers a good critique of online discussions (like MeFi), and he makes some excellent suggestions on how to improve them. He quotes an unnamed source: "The problem with online forums is that those who have very little to contribute participate the most while those with valuable information to share participate the least." Now, let's try to keep the conversation cordial...
"blogging" is going to get discovered (again?) by the "press."
Folks, this may sound like you've heard it before, but I've got a feeling that "blogging" is going to get discovered (again?) by the "press." That would be a good thing. It would focus on web community instead of web commerce. As a meme, it could take on a momentum all of its own! The AOLers and Everyman would see there's a whole "new" level of social web browsing, which may lead to more action-oriented life choices.
