A Hipper Crowd of Shushers featuring one JW. NYT - registration required
Jessamyn in the NY Times
Woo woo! Jessamyn is in the NYTimes.
Jessamyn West, 38, an editor of “Revolting Librarians Redux: Radical Librarians Speak Out” a book that promotes social responsibility in librarianship, and the librarian behind the Web site librarian.net (its tagline is “putting the rarin’ back in librarian since 1999”) agreed that many new librarians are attracted to what they call the “Library 2.0” phenomenon. “It’s become a techie profession,” she said.
In a typical day, Ms. West might send instant and e-mail messages to patrons, many of who do their research online rather than in the library. She might also check Twitter, MySpace and other social networking sites, post to her various blogs and keep current through MetaFilter and RSS feeds. Some librarians also create Wikis or podcasts.

AskMe 'really useful'
Something called www.ask.metafilter.com has made the Independent's list of 101 really useful websites. Just so you know.
livejournal to emulate mefi flagging system?
As a follow up to this post about livejournal's recent suspension of several hundred user accounts, in his latest update on the situation SixApart CEO Barak Berkowitz name checked metafilter citing us as a good example of community policing.
We know we can learn a lot from other communities that use a combination of reputation software and human judgment to gauge community opinion, and we are now actively exploring how we can let the community "vote" on what is acceptable content in order to create greater consistency.
Mefi reference on Wired (sort of)
Lore Sjöberg has a column/blog/whatever on Wired's website. In the most recent edition/post, he expresses a desire to "replace [the caps lock key] with a more useful key, like Reload MetaFilter Obsessively."
Full thing here.
Fearless Leader Watch Filter: Mathowie presentation on online communities
Thought some folks might like to see a presentation Matthew posted up on the most excellent slideshare site about building online communities. Fantastic selection of photos in the presentation...nicely done.
(No, I'm not a crazy stalker person - I was checking slideshare out for some dull compsci reading, and Mathowie's head popped up this was a featured presentation. Enjoy!
lolpau
In the never ending saga of lolcat scholarship (no snark please), our very own brownpau has gracefully snuck into the swaddling canon of of lolcat literature.
All the news that...
Huh. So the blog of a certain Mr. Language Hat is linked in the sidebar at the Village Voice books section (under "Bookmarks") now? Is this old news? Did I miss something? Cheers for Mr. Hat, in any case.
Ninjas, Mythbusters, Mefi - Too awesome to handle
This video, "Metafilter vs. Ask a Ninja Video" has a very obvious MeFi callout.
Roger gets our get well card.
The Chicago Sun-Times ran a little item on page 30 today. It's full of get well messages from Metafilter to Roger Ebert. It's online too.
MeFi shoutout on tonight's Mythbusters
Speaking of asavage, did anyone else see the MeFi shoutout on tonight's Mythbusters? On the wall during one the post-myth summaries, "MeFi" was written in what looked like chalk on a green chalkboard. asavage mentioned that he'd shout the site out out in MeFi Podcast 3, but it sounded like that would only be for the old west show.
Pounding waves of colorful bands of creeps
Skot summarizes Ask Metafilter: "AskMe is often quite an amazing resource; it's made even more impressive by the fact that this 'community' of thousands of sun-deprived gripers frequently give good advice. Predictably, however, you have to wade through pounding waves of horrible bullshit to find it. And then, when you do find it, you have to sit there a moment and worry about the fact that this community—like all communities—is filled with a colorful band of assholes, half of whom hate the other half; a full two-thirds who are illiterate or insane; an unidentifiable portion who are basement-dwelling hate-wraiths; ten percent who are axe-grinding creeps, possibly with real axes; and your average random smattering of mean-spirited shitheads. But somewhere in there are some good answers! Usually." Great Scott!
Good charity keeps plugging along
Remember Modest Needs? They turned five years old this week and hit one million dollars in funds dispersed since they started. In the anniversary post, the founder mentions they got their whole start thanks to that post on mefi.
Metafilter mentioned in a book
Metafilter is mentioned in a book...The second page of Citizen Marketers includes a mention of a Mefi post about George Masters' Tiny Machines apple video

MetaFilter - now As Seen On TV
In Part III What's Happening To The News of Frontline's four part series News War, there came, during one of several discussions of the impact of the internet upon the news, a montage of screenshots of various websites, weblogs and community weblogs. MetaFilter was one of them. I seen it! Now should that be a little Woot! worthy or what?
Though sometimes we venture into lust or schadenfreude.

Mathowie now a member of the "Gray Lady"?
It seems our fearless leader has a little New York Times thing going on in tommorow's paper.
Unless there's another Matthew Haughey who writes tech stuff.
In breaking news, miko is awesome!
MeFite in the news: Our very own miko is featured in CNN.com's article covering the RPM challenge. Neat!
Jessamyn in Valley News
"Everybody's Interesting" Metafilter's own, Jessamyn West, was profiled today in a local Vermont / New Hampshire paper, The Valley News. Metafilter and Ask MetaFilter are mentioned a few times. Unfortunately, the pictures that accompanied the dead tree version don't grace the online version because there are two cute photos.
Ear to the ground.
This is pretty cool.
AskMe mentionned in a Reddit post.
From a front-page post on Reddit this morning, here's a "Massive list of sites all self learners should know about" that includes a link to Ask Mefi, under "Questions"
amro on tv
Whoa, amro, you weren't kidding. I don't think even asavage has had that much face time on American network TV.

campaign for FeistyFerret fame
RE: The FeistyFerret post below; are any Mefites interested in starting an e-mail campaign to get the kid on a big show, like David Letterman or The Tonight Show?
It may be a silly request but Chance is a cool and good kid. Maybe we can hook him up with a really cool late Christmas present.

Metafilter's OwnTM Chance Ruder, aka FeistyFerret, will be on Larry King Live
Set your Tivos: Metafilter's OwnTM Chance Ruder, aka FeistyFerret, will be on Larry King Live tonight with talk-show-wildlife-guy Jack Hanna. Chance's contribution to Metafilter history was cemented when he provided this best answer over in the green and then successfully fought off accusations that he didn't actually exist. Having overcome this existential crisis, Chance is now poised to become a Television Personality.

Mefi-CBC Radio crossover
I have noticed lately that the topics of many of the FPP's that I read on Metafilter end up being features on CBC Radio a day or two later. Just wondering if we had a member using MeFi as a tool for providing content for their radio show on a regular basis. Is it you Sook-Yin?
Librarians love AskMe
The article that I wrote for Library Journal about Ask Metafilter is now online. It lost a wee bit in the editing process, but I'm pretty happy with it. MeFiBrarian Posse represent!
Deep down, the internet is about people
Deep down, the internet is about people. Sure it's an interconnected set of computers following simple machine instructions, but the driving force behind it all is people connecting with other people. The human network is good way to describe what the internet has become. It is ingrained in our everyday lives. We email coworkers, friends, and loved ones. Our lives are captured by digital cameras and shared online. We read blogs for their personalities and unique take on the world. Even dry data like bank balances and weather forecasts have become ways to accentuate and improve your daily life.
