Post about historical debate about numbers?

I seem to recall a MetaFilter post (or comment in a related post?) that was about the historical debate over several mathematical issues, including a) whether 1 should be considered a number, and b) whether 1 is prime or composite. I searched for it, but can't find it. I recall there being a link to an academic paper about this topic, which is what I really want to find. Does anyone remember this? [more inside]

How to make profile photo/info unfindable to an internet search engine?

When I began actively using Metafilter I put my photo and personal information in my profile, but discovered this was all viewable to anyone using a search engine so I took it off. Can I make my photo private to Metafilter members only, or, if not, might the moderators consider making this possible in the future? For those who know about computers, why might this be a difficult request for a website to fulfill? More inside... [more inside]

Books for the non-misogynist young reader

In the long, and incredibly insightful thread about misogyny that was spawned by the tragedy in California, I had a moment, going through my book collection, whereupon I realized that I had very few books with strong female characters that I would be comfortable giving to the kids. (Mine, and the crew that seems to live here during summer; boys and girls, ranging in age from 11-13.) I asked for recommendations, and the wealth of suggestions was amazing. I would feel selfish keeping it to myself, and wanted to share, so that other people with tween kids would also have them. [more inside]

Trying to track down an FPP about an adventure game

I remember reading a post here about an adventure game where the primary mechanic was using a tool that allowed you to change objects by altering a single letter in the word. For a (bad) example, if you have a nun figurine in your inventory, you would change the N to a G and get a gun figurine, which you could then use to hold up a bank. That's not an exact example, but sort of what the gameplay was like. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Bug with favorites and "load recent comments"

I'm seeing a bug while favoriting comments that've been loaded through the "recent comments" auto-loader. If I add an auto-loaded comment to my favorites, all the loaded comments vanish once the favorite's been added. It seems to occur while the site's loading up the new favorite count — I get a brief "adding favorite" dialogue, and then, boop, all gone! This is occurring on Google Chrome on OS X; I'm not sure if anybody else is getting this, but I've tried this on multiple subsites and it's a recurring and consistent bug.

Time warp to 2005!

I tried going back to one of my favorite MeFi posts. It was based around a usenet discussion (or collection of usenet discussions) made in real time about the new Star Wars film "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. Sadly, the main link is now dead. Anyone know where this stuff can be found now? It survived from 1983 until 2005, so hopefully it's still available somewhere.

A small heads up about userscripts dot org

It seems that http://userscripts.org has been down for an extended period of time, although the site is currently available on an alternate port ( http://userscripts.org:8080/ ). I would like to suggest if you maintain scripts there, that you make them available at another location (perhaps the mefi wiki?) out of an abundance of caution.

As a lurker, thank you, MetaFilter, for so much.

I've lurked here since at least 2011. If the following sounds like hyperbole, it's not: MetaFilter has been a huge, positive, and transforming part of my life. I need to say something now or never. I'll try to keep the emotionality at a minimum. No promises, though, so forgive me in advance. [more inside]

Can't find AskMe about organizing years worth of files

Can anyone help me find the post I'm thinking of? I'm almost certain this was in AskMe sometime within the last 2-3 months. I thought I favorited it but it's not turning up when I search favorites. The question was something about how to organize this mess of files from years of various different computers, partial backups, etc. with a focus on avoiding redundancy. There were several good answers describing various programs to use, I think Evernote got trotted out too as it always does. Maybe WinDirStat too except when I use it as a search term I'm not finding what I want. Am I crazy? Did I imagine this thread?

Did I miss something, or does this just confirm the death of print?

Has Metafilter actually gone the best part of a day without anyone posting an item regarding the editorial shake up at NYT yesterday? Maybe this is my "no one I know voted for Nixon" moment, but it took up about 50% of my Twitter feed for a few hours immediately following the announcement. On the other hand, this does seem like a topic that might be ripe for administrative deletion due to baggage overloading. Just wondering.

San Diego Fires -- Checking In

Not sure where else to put this but I wanted to reach out to my fellow San Diego MeFites now that there are 9 fires around the county. Everybody okay? Looking for a comment on Metafilter and search is failing me.

Some time in the relatively recent past there was a discussion on one of Metafilter's sites wherein a user posted a snarky line something like "Hey Jimmy, don't get raped" in a discussion of an anti-rape or abuse meme/campaign that was current on Facebook at the time. Search is failing me.

Expanding FanFare to More Shows

Thanks to the tireless efforts of pb, we're now able to start opening FanFare up to more shows. You'll see a few more shows listed on the New Post page, as well as a link to add additional shows. New shows will go through an approval process like episodes do currently (here's what a search on a show title looks like). I'd like to ask everyone upfront not to just go in and add every show you can think of, but to add shows you are ready to make posts right now about that you expect people will join you on.
