I seem to recall a MetaFilter post (or comment in a related post?) that was about the historical debate over several mathematical issues, including a) whether 1 should be considered a number, and b) whether 1 is prime or composite. I searched for it, but can't find it. I recall there being a link to an academic paper about this topic, which is what I really want to find. Does anyone remember this? [more inside]
To help reduce the strain of managing the site with fewer mods, we're going to switch on the Metatalk post queue full time starting today. More details on that within. Also: have you updated your email address in your preferences recently? [more inside]
When I began actively using Metafilter I put my photo and personal information in my profile, but discovered this was all viewable to anyone using a search engine so I took it off. Can I make my photo private to Metafilter members only, or, if not, might the moderators consider making this possible in the future? For those who know about computers, why might this be a difficult request for a website to fulfill? More inside... [more inside]
In the long, and incredibly insightful thread about misogyny that was spawned by the tragedy in California, I had a moment, going through my book collection, whereupon I realized that I had very few books with strong female characters that I would be comfortable giving to the kids. (Mine, and the crew that seems to live here during summer; boys and girls, ranging in age from 11-13.) I asked for recommendations, and the wealth of suggestions was amazing. I would feel selfish keeping it to myself, and wanted to share, so that other people with tween kids would also have them. [more inside]
I remember reading a post here about an adventure game where the primary mechanic was using a tool that allowed you to change objects by altering a single letter in the word. For a (bad) example, if you have a nun figurine in your inventory, you would change the N to a G and get a gun figurine, which you could then use to hold up a bank. That's not an exact example, but sort of what the gameplay was like. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
I'm seeing a bug while favoriting comments that've been loaded through the "recent comments" auto-loader. If I add an auto-loaded comment to my favorites, all the loaded comments vanish once the favorite's been added. It seems to occur while the site's loading up the new favorite count — I get a brief "adding favorite" dialogue, and then, boop, all gone! This is occurring on Google Chrome on OS X; I'm not sure if anybody else is getting this, but I've tried this on multiple subsites and it's a recurring and consistent bug.
Just wanted to let folks know that I'm running a weekly game giveaway over at Gamefilter for the next couple of months, so now's a great time to come hang out and get your feet wet there, if you're interested. [more inside]
I tried going back to one of my favorite MeFi posts. It was based around a usenet discussion (or collection of usenet discussions) made in real time about the new Star Wars film "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. Sadly, the main link is now dead. Anyone know where this stuff can be found now? It survived from 1983 until 2005, so hopefully it's still available somewhere.
Could we have a "My Shows" view on the FanFare front page? I probably only want to keep up with at most 4 or 5 of the whole list there....as we add more shows, that list is just going to grow and grow. Thoughts?
Hey there MeFiSwappers! This is just your friendly reminder that the mailing deadline for the Songbird Swap is a week from today on Saturday, May 31ST. Get those mixes burned, packaged, and posted ASAP! Then come inside and tell everyone about your mix, or about the mixes you've received. [more inside]
I object to the multiple uses of 'whackadoodle' to describe the mental illness of a young man (who yes, killed half a dozen people) in this thread. [more inside]
Some of us are discussing a re-watching of Mad Men from the beginning once this current half-season ends. We have some questions around spoilers and quasi-spoilers and exactly how to set this up in FanFare. [more inside]
Is anyone running a MeFi group for the upcoming World Cup fantasy competition?
It seems that http://userscripts.org has been down for an extended period of time, although the site is currently available on an alternate port ( http://userscripts.org:8080/ ). I would like to suggest if you maintain scripts there, that you make them available at another location (perhaps the mefi wiki?) out of an abundance of caution.
The Metafilter hardship has been caused mainly due to a lower ranking of the website in Google. I believe that there are a few small fixes that can significantly help. [more inside]
We've set up an official fundraising/contributing/support page here, and are now tracking the number of people signing on as monthly supporters. [more inside]
I've lurked here since at least 2011. If the following sounds like hyperbole, it's not: MetaFilter has been a huge, positive, and transforming part of my life. I need to say something now or never. I'll try to keep the emotionality at a minimum. No promises, though, so forgive me in advance. [more inside]
I don't care about your misreadings. [more inside]
As a distraction from the big news, codacorolla has foolishly offered to set up a MeFi movie fantasy league. [more inside]
Wanted to let people know that while I'll continue to be hanging around here like I've always been, I'll be taking a (small) job at the Internet Archive being the support person and the user/tech liaison for Open Library. [more inside]
Today I need to share some unfortunate news: because of serious financial downturn, MetaFilter will be losing three of its moderators to layoffs at the end of this month. What that means for the site and the site’s future are described below. [more inside]
Can anyone help me find the post I'm thinking of? I'm almost certain this was in AskMe sometime within the last 2-3 months. I thought I favorited it but it's not turning up when I search favorites. The question was something about how to organize this mess of files from years of various different computers, partial backups, etc. with a focus on avoiding redundancy. There were several good answers describing various programs to use, I think Evernote got trotted out too as it always does. Maybe WinDirStat too except when I use it as a search term I'm not finding what I want. Am I crazy? Did I imagine this thread?
Pony request for a hard word limit on what shows up over the fold of new posts. [more inside]
I have my profile set to receive notifications of IRL meetups within 100 miles, but I would also like to get notified about proposed meetups within the same distance. Who knows, maybe adding one more person can shift it from "proposed" to "let's do this thing."
I've been looking for a recent post about a new site (or program or script) that will scan the text in an image. It was posted about a month or so ago...ring a bell with anyone?
The FanFare site is evolving and we mentioned in the first post about it that we'll someday be moving into other areas of pop culture on the site. The TV experiments have gone pretty well so we're going to start playing with movies as a major post type matter on the site. [more inside]
Is there a data set of links to comments from other threads, ranked by the number of times the comment is linked to? Or, could one be created? [more inside]
Thanks to the work of scottandrew, the MetaFilter Music app (iOS 7+ only) is now available on the App Store for free. [more inside]
Has Metafilter actually gone the best part of a day without anyone posting an item regarding the editorial shake up at NYT yesterday? Maybe this is my "no one I know voted for Nixon" moment, but it took up about 50% of my Twitter feed for a few hours immediately following the announcement. On the other hand, this does seem like a topic that might be ripe for administrative deletion due to baggage overloading. Just wondering.
Not sure where else to put this but I wanted to reach out to my fellow San Diego MeFites now that there are 9 fires around the county. Everybody okay? I'm between the Poinsettia and Bernardo fires and while I appear to be in a safe zone, my coworkers and friends are not since they're so much closer to the points of origin for each blaze. :(
I've had a bit of a difficult time over the last while, and I just wanted to say thanks to all you lovely MeFites for being there in one way or another. [more inside]
Episode 92 of the podcast was recorded yesterday and runs about an hour and twenty minutes long covering all our favorite posts from the past month of MetaFilter [more inside]
Sorry Emma, don't know your Mefi handle or I'd email you directly, but congratulations on topping the Metafilter MeFight Fantasy FPL league!
Some time in the relatively recent past there was a discussion on one of Metafilter's sites wherein a user posted a snarky line something like "Hey Jimmy, don't get raped" in a discussion of an anti-rape or abuse meme/campaign that was current on Facebook at the time. Search is failing me.
I want to point out a few good threads on AskMeFi this week: one on giving children allowance/chores, one on punishing others, and a great answer on suicide methods in the 1930s. [more inside]
One of the nicer things about being a MeFite is exposure to new ideas and content we might never have otherwise encountered. I'm curious to know what life lessons and other bits of knowledge you've learned about the world thanks to MetaFilter. Please share!
Thanks to the tireless efforts of pb, we're now able to start opening FanFare up to more shows. You'll see a few more shows listed on the New Post page, as well as a link to add additional shows. New shows will go through an approval process like episodes do currently (here's what a search on a show title looks like). I'd like to ask everyone upfront not to just go in and add every show you can think of, but to add shows you are ready to make posts right now about that you expect people will join you on. [more inside]
I was wondering what MeFites and the mod team think about changing the front pages so that the "[#] comments" link goes to the start of comments in the post, and not to the start of the post body. [more inside]
I made a comment on the Fannibal thread, then after a while I removed it from my Recent Activity. I just made another comment there yet the post isn't showing up on Recent Activity again. Bug or feature? (I've done the clearing cookies and logging in/out thing, no dice. On Dolphin for Android.) [more inside]
I was recently called out by another user for the style I use when quoting others. The criticism was that, by wrapping the other person's comments in <small> tags, I was engaging in a deliberate effort to diminish the importance of what they said. Is this a legitimate criticism? [more inside]
In this thread, there's a note about spoilery comments being deleted. I don't think that's a good policy to hold here; the comments were (presumably) not harmful to members, and should not have been axed. [more inside]
