AskMe Etiquette
AskMe etiquette: is it OK to use AskMe answers as a lead-in for business? Someone close to me is a professional career counsellor/resume writer & I've thought of recommending they join MeFi specifically so they can join in answering job-related questions, with a thought to promoting their own services if people want more in-depth assistance. I'm absolutely NOT talking about a cookie-cutter spamish approach that purely takes advantage of the community while giving nothing in return, but real answers that help people out with an understated offer to provide something more substantial at a price. I see a lot of job- & career-related posts to AskMe & I see it as a good fit, but I'll only suggest it to them if I get a thumbs up from the hive.

Smells Like Astroturfer
Is PreacherTom an astroturfer? He's made 13 posts to the blue, all in the past couple of months. And all 13 of them start with a link to Business Week. There's someone with the same name on Netscape.com's digg-esque site who does the same thing, and one on StumbleUpon, too. And that's not all. Am I being paranoid? Is this even worth frowning on, as long as they're all decent posts?
Self-Linking Callout
kirkaracha might need to be reminded of the "no self-link" policy.
Self-link
Evidence
Personally, I think it's a relevant and useful link, but I don't think it should be up to the poster to make the judgment call, do you?

The only things I have to post are digg, news, and selflinks
I don't come to MeFi much anymore, and I clearly misunderstood what constitutes a self-link. Yes, I linked to my co-worker, but I'm not drunk. I just thought MeFi would appreciate it because of Matt's Star Wars Kid video.
The thing is, if you count out things you can easily find on digg, things that are brreaking news stories, and things that my friends do, I don't have anything else to post.
Which probably explains why I don't post anymore.

Self-Link
It's on the borderline of why it isn't allowed, but it is an admitted self link.
Self-link. Don't link to things you're involved with.
spam spam spammity spam
This is a spammy self-link in the comments of the green, from a shiny new user. The poster almost asked permission in the gray (the thread just below this one), but I suspect that this isn't quite what #1 had in mind when he said to go ahead and make the post.
Self link?
self/commercial link? This link seems really suspicious to me. It could be an attempt to boost the page rank of that legal marketing page, or something. Posters in the thread seem pretty skeptical of the claims, and it just seems sketchy to me.
SaneWork self-linker.
GoodSearch selflinker?
2 Posts, registered a day after a post highlighting Goodsearch, all in favor of the search engine. I'm guessing spammer? The "I think GoodSearch is a brilliant idea and my friends and family are now rallying around it." sentence really tipped me off.
Self Link on the Blue
55335 on the blue is a self-link (I'm deliberately not linking to it), anyone know how to contact a mod? Are they asleep? It's especially irritating because it's a self-link to a crap site about "marketing and making money on the web". Also, how about a feature that allows a user to self-revoke posts for a certain amount of time (like 10 minutes) if they realize or learn it was a bad idea.
Possible self-linker? Turns out no.
Is this setting off anybody else's self-link-dar? 8 comments to the 'Filter and one answer to AskMetafilter, no profile information, and she favorites her own not-particularly-interesting post?
some days you are the pigeon, some days you are deleted.
nearly every one of cleverusername's FPPs contains, somewhere in it, a link to The Escapist.
For instance, nearly every one of cleverusername's FPPs contains, somewhere in it, a link to The Escapist. It's true. Check it out.

Here's some Pepsi Blue/self linking coming down the pipe for ya...
Civilization Vs. The Middle Ages
Civilisation Vs. The Middle Ages. This has got to be a self link. A single link to a 'framing' post on a blog with two posts and a miss-spelled title (and you know it's bad if I notice something being misspelled), all by someone who posted a handful of comments from over a year ago wherein he called for the execution of both Hugo Chavez and Cindy Sheehan.
Egregious self-linking
And the award for most obvious self-linker goes to ...

Can I post a self-link in a comment?
I'm fairly new to MetaFilter, and really only ever read the Ask section. I know - and respect - that I'm not supposed to post a self-link anywhere. But in a question I read yesterday, I saw that a lot of people object to websites that play sounds (as do I). I've found a program that lets me mute the whole browser window, and would like to put that info somewhere as I think a lot of people would like it. But I do run a site that gives discounts on software, and will have one on that program next week.
So I guess I have 2 questions - can I politely post a link to the program at all? It's not news, just something it sounds like people want. And second, can I post that my site will be discounting it next week?
Thanks,

Weird semi-self link
In this projects post, josephtate claims to work at Grupthink. Thats fine. But then in this metafilter post, the poster rabble lists josephtate as "co-worker". Someone can check my math, but doesnt that make it a self-link?
Would it be okay to post a link to my book in a post?
I wanted to post about the current threat to abortion rights along with some links to information about how to get or do abortions. One of the links I wanted to include was to a book that I worked on. Is it inapropriate to put this post on the main page? (Since I wasn't sure, I posted it on projects.) Advice?
Self link
Can I link to my flickr page?
self-linker alert
Generally helpful selflinks
This user links to his own blog in six answers from the thirteen he has provided for other AskMe users, including recommending his own blog as one of his favourites. His only comment on the blue links to his blog. I am reluctant to bring this up as the answers he provides are generally helpful, on the other hand he seems more likely to help if he can link to his website. I guess Matt can decide is this is insidious spamming or not.

Self-links in askme posts?
Although the self-link was fixed by Jessamyn, I doubt that this was posted in the true spirit of AskMe, considering that the OP was booted from MoFi for self-linking ten days ago.
Self-linking for critique purposes?
Is it acceptable to post a self link in ask if you are looking for peer response to something you have done, ie ways to improve a site, suggestion on a book/article/song/video, and if not has anyone else ever suggested that a mefi peer review might be useful. Granted we enjoy flagellating each other as is, but it would be nice if we could solicit feed back. I understand that if such an option were available directly on projects it might lead to people slandering works of those they dislike, but surely some of us would like to actively seek criticism.
Is a wikipedia article I contribued to a self-link?
I want to post some links over on the Filter about an obscure topic. However, due to its obscurity, some of the links would be Wiki articles that I previously created. Would this count as self-promotion, or would it be accetable to do such? Should I simply do my best to work around them?
Possible questionable self-linking in comments
Do new users know about self-linking? I normally don't care to police this stuff, but mickeyz has been a member two days and self-linked to his own banal blog twice so far.
What's all this about urinals as art?
So if I were to post this article about someone attacking R. Mutt's "Urinal" with a hammer, would that be considered a "One Link News Filter Pseudo Self Link FFP" ?
self-link trainwreck in progress
Err, self-link trainwreck in progress on the blue. Thanks, that is all.
An interesting combination of sleazy and forthright
Vigilance
You have got to be joking? No. Considering the number of self-links that we've been having lately, I think that it's worth everyone's time to appreciate people who are keeping their eyes open for them, and to give them credit for trying, even if that particular link turned out to be a dud.
