Sidebar URL error.

Oddly, the sideblog link to the "realistic swordfighting" thread takes me to something called www.marginalia.org. Surely, this is unintentional.

Can we have permanently open threads in the sidebar?

My favorite pony: Perhaps certain posts could be set aside in a Hall of Fame nook, like certain creatures of Hollywood — ever-youthful, never far from our thoughts, and always open to comment. I'm particularly thinking of this thread. All kudos to washburn, but in this case, the comments have been so wonderful that I hate to see this thread inch down the blue, creeping slowly slowly into oblivion. Save the worms! Anybody?

Sidebar Clarification

Nit-picking: On the frontpage, the description on the sideblog says 'This sideblog keeps track of site news and metatalk threads', yet all the threads are from AskMefi.

Using upcoming.org to organize Metafilter meetups

Upcoming metafilter meetups meet upcoming. The kids at Whedonesque recently started using upcoming.org to organize their events. If we did something similar to what they're doing here I could just pull in a RSS feed from the event search for "metafilter" and display it here, as a sidebar. Also, anyone could subscribe to the search and keep track of new events around the world. Sound good?

Sidebar Hunter S Thompson story

"Stories like this in the Hunter S Thompson thread make it a real gem." Blue's front page side blog could use a direct link to the specific story. Ta.

RSS for Sidebar?

Now that the sideblog is back in action, would it be possible to get an RSS feed for it? If this would involve a lot of work, just put it somewhere on the list of Ponies, but I'm wondering if, since the sidebar is powered by Blogger, there might not already be some sort of automatically generated feed that I just need to point my reader at.

Sticky meetups?

MetaFilter gatherings are common, and often planned weeks in advance. In that amount of time, the related threads are pushed off the front page. Is there a system we can work out where they become sticky? Maybe be posted on the sidebar until they happen?

Is anyone else seeing strange formatting behavior on this thread? I'm seeing a white background, right sidebar stuff lining up on the left, and the page text beginning below the sidebar info. It looks like the stylesheet isn't being applied for some reason. (Firefox, Mozilla and IE)

New policy on election/iraq/political posts?

Kinja Link Doesn't Work

In the tradition of asking questions about items in the sidebar of MeFi, I can't get the Kinja link to work in either Mozilla (preferred) or IE. Both attempts result in "The weblog addresses listed below are not valid. Please enter URLs in the form www.example.com" Granted, I could be un-lazy and type in www.metafilter.com, but I thought I should point it out.

Why not have some kind of "recent posts" sidebar, or the like?

Why not have some kind of "recent posts" sidebar, or the like? As it is, ongoing conversations fade out in mid-thought as they go down then off the page, as people stop checking them. No doubt someone will remark that that would be bringing Mefi closer to some kind of message board, but is that really such a bad thing?

Matt. Way to go on the sidebar entries for upcoming MeFi meetups. It's great to know that the editorial stance of Metafilter isn't just about the good ole' U.S. of A., but also includes all those tiny little countries you may have read about in National Geographic.

there is currently a vertical gap on the front page

With the sideblog open, there is currently a vertical gap on the front page running the entire vertical distance between the last line of the description in the "Today some of us thought it..." post, and the line with Miguel Cardoso line. The gap disappears in the sideblog is closed. This is in my Mozilla for PC.

Sidebar for Macs

New feature for Mac users. The sidebar feature works for me in IE 5.12 under OS X. I think the page holder feature has been around a while, but I had no idea. Anyway, for those using Mac IE browsers, you now have a sidebar version of metafilter (don't ask me about Opera versions, they're not possible as far as I know).

Coding new features actually makes painful time spent in airports fly by.

sidebar could be used for "hot" topics

Is the sidebar able to list "hot" topics that are more than likely going to be a) a double post news item of the day b) a thread that reachs say more than 80 comments or c) a user who wants to keep a thread accessible without having to remember the day, topic, or events that seem to push a link off the page and into the archives before some have a chance to comment or view the link?

How are things sidebarred?

Has any thought been given before to selecting posts which can be considered "timeless" or "very important", and keeping them highlighted and visible (maybe in the sidebar) for a week+ so comments can keep going on ? Perhaps 2 or 3 "Link and Think" type posts always present and alive at the top of the sidebar ? (recognizing that the process of determining what should go in there might make this a non-starter)

Stylesheet tweak

I made a small tweak to the main page stylesheet. On IE 5/Mac, the main post text should wrap around the sidebar on the right, instead of leaving a blank space below it. I tested it in IE 5/win2k, IE 6/XP, Opera/PC, and IE 5/Mac and it seems to be exactly the same.

Sidebar collapse

Sidebar collapse. I think when folks were asking for the sidebar collapse to be brought back, it was not so much to get rid of clutter as it was to free up that 25% of the screen that the front page posts could run into. Even with the sidebar collapsed [and the ads remaining, they're ok with me] I still have a large blue stripe down the right hand side, making it one longass page. Is there a way to wiggle around the front page elements to have the ad present but more side-to-side room for posts, or is this just me and my mac pissing into the wind?

Use the MeFi sidebar to draw attention to recent MeTa threads?

I posted this in another thread, but since you can't see new posts on MetaTalk, I decided to post it here. Would it be a good idea to list recent MetaTalk threads in a section of the right sidebar?

Also: would dates be better than days for right sidebar posts (7/27/01 instead of Friday)? Kind of like filepile. It's hard to tell how stale the news is with just days...

"recent comments" browsing misses interesting stuff

For the past week or so, I've been browsing by "recent comments," which seems to work the best for me. However today I switched to "date" to check out what I've been missing and was surprised to see that there was quite a bit of very interesting links that I had missed.

It seems that the really chatty topics are the ones I've been seeing, but the really interesting links were in the date filter.

Anyway to make the side-bar customizable to add the feed of date or recent comments? Not that it's all that difficult to switch between the two, but it would be nifty to be able to look at both at the same time.
